The camera is great value, having been "replaced" with the 30D in the CANON line up. Magnesium body, tough and resilient, features all you would expect from CANON, don't like the EF-S lenses though (PLASTIC AND GRIM), so get the body only and go for either TAMRON/SIGMA etc, or upwards with CANON'S pro lenses. 8+mp is more than enough to give you outstanding results, the 30D is also 8+mp, has only a few extra features, not worth shaking a stick at, and a larger LCD screen, which for me is not an issue (larger, although easier to view, also means easier to damage !), WHY PAY AN EXTRA (even on ebay) £200 +, for what is for the general user, the same camera ?. I rate CANON highly, (i've got a 400D and the 960iS compact as well as a 20D), all from ebay. Pick the buy carefully, you'll get a camera which will stand up to most you can throw at it.

  Great second camera
Review created: 16/07/08
by:

I bought the Canon 20D DSLR camera at a good price - a little over the recommended second hand value BUT it had taken less than 500 frames so was almost as good as new. I wanted a second Canon DSLR as a backup for my Canon 40D or to use as a second camera on location. It replaced my old Canon 300D in this respect but I may have this camera's sensor assembly doctored to be 'infra red capable' for a bit of artistic fun. On a shoot the 40D might have a telephoto lens whilst the 20D might have a wide angle, for example. The 20D is capable of excellent high resolution images and works in a similar way to the 40D so is 'second nature' to use. It uses the same lenses, of course, as the 40D and other accessories are shared such as batteries and CF cards. If I was taking pictures in a 'hostile environment' such as the mosh pit at a gig I might well use the 20D and leave the 40D at home in case it took a knock or a splash of beer - or worse! The 40D is a refined version of the 20D (with the 30D as the link between them) but the 20D can certainly hold its own as a very decent backup or second camera. Especially as the second hand price is a fraction of the new! Canon's recommended retail price for a new 20D in 2004 when it was introduced was £1,300 so if one is available second hand in the £150 to £350 (depending on condition and usage) you're in line to snap up a bargain.

  Canon EOS 20d digital camera

This is an excellent camera and can now be had for a very reasonable price.

I bought this as a gift and was originally going to get a 1000d but after trying one out they felt very cheap though some features were pretty neat. I just felt that if I'm going to part with £400 that it should at least look as though it cost that much.

I browsed ebay to see what was on offer for a similar sum and came across alot of Canon 20d and 30d cameras. I checked some reviews (dp review, steves cameras etc...) and they said they were awesome semi-pro cameras.

So I thought, 'Nice one', and picked up a 20d kit with 2 lenses and a battery grip for £250. Bargain. I had money spare to get a super dooper lens as well.

Build quality is awesome. Solid magnesium case is light and very, well, solid. These have a robust shutter mechanism which last more than double a standard Rebel range.
Nice little scroll wheel menu (like an ipod)
Tons of features
Bright 2.5" lcd screen
Over 8 megapixels
9 AF points

This feels like a professional bit of kit and will last a long time.

Sure, it's a model nearly 4 years old and it doesn't have the 'live-view' function like a standard compact camera but for the money there is nothing that can beat it and the images it captures are so good.

So if you are just wanting to start in photography then I would advise checking out the second hand market as you will get more bang for your buck. I mean, I picked one up for not much more than a good quality compact camera.

  Canon EOS-20D Digital SLR Camera

The EOS-20D is an awsome camera for the semi professional as it provides everything that an ameture stepping up to the professional range from any of the lower spec Canon SLR range would need. The set up and control configuration on the 20D is very similar to earlier models and lower spec Canons and therefore is a breeze to get to know. The speed of the camera is also excellent as it will take 5 fps which even now is still fast enough to compete against the other digital SLR's out there at the moment and the fact that this camera came out in 2004 means the price you can get it for is all stacked in the buyers favor. The only bad point is that the 20D is pretty heavy. It is made with a metal body, but this to me means hardy construction and will be able to be more durable over the years of ownership as opposed to the plastic body SLR's.

  A bargain at current prices
Review created: 13/06/08

At the time of writing you get pick up good 20D bodies on ebay for 250-300 depending on condition and any extra accessories provided. Although launched in 2004 the 20D is still a great camera in 2008 - barely different to the later 30D (which adds spot meter and bigger screen) and still able to hold a candle to the current 40D.

While it's 8.2 megapixels sound low, I've completed exhibition 16x20 up-rezzed prints with a 30D (same sensor) and they look great. There's enough in this camera to get plenty out of great lenses like my Canon L's and Sigma EXs.

The controls, ergonomics, and solid feel (it's a megnesium body) make it a far more compelling choice than, say, a new 400D with more fiddly scaled-back controls. Plenty of pros and semi-pros still use 20Ds. In fact, pros tend to just carry on using what works until it breaks, unlike amatuer big-spenders!

The only downside is that it doesn't have up-to-the minute stuff like sensor cleaning or 14bit colour (good but not ground-breaking) but, hey, it's £250 and from 2004 so that's hardly a valid criticism.

  magnesium bodied semi-professional camera

I traded up from a Nikon D40 which I loved for its ease of use and picture quality, what I did not like was the plasticky feel to the body and lenses. I already had a film Canon 50e body with a selection of EF lenses that would fit the digital EOS bodies so it seemed a 10D or 20D digital body was the way forward even allowing for the fact that my film lenses would now equate to x1.6 on the digital body.I chose the 20d over the 10d as it has some improvements over the latter including 8mp instead of 6mp for the 10d.
I am quite happy with 6mp but the extra does allow you to crop a little more when editing, the included software of Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 is very impressive and all I need for sharpening the image etc before printing.
The camera to use is a joy it`s weighty but firm in the hand and happy to let you use full auto in the Basic Zone or to get the best out of it Program in the
Creative Zone. Mine does have one problem in the auto and program mode with the flash output, it under-exposes by 1EV and I need to dial this in before taking the picture it`s fine in full manual but in the basic zone I cannot make any of these adjustments, this appears to be a common problem as I have read this in other reviews, but anyway that aside, no shutter lag and 5 frames a second and the quality of the finished picture which is superb and cannot be faulted in my opinion. Also outstanding is the almost total lack of noise at ISO 1600 I often shoot with this setting with my 100-300(160-480)zoom lens as it allows me to set a very fast shutter speed.LCD screen size could be bigger but it does give extended battery life (about 300)shots in my case.
Purchase price for a good one is now about £250/£300 on eBay and if you decide to buy one and be more creative with your work you will not be disappointed I can highly recommend it.
With regard to lenses the basic kit digital lens 18-55 that some times comes with the camera is quite soft around the edges wide open at 18mm but at the upper end 55mm very good indeed, the IS version is a little better including Macro but both have plastic mounts.
The older metal mount EF lenses for EOS film cameras are much better but you have to factor in the 1.6 difference for example 28mm wide angle becomes 44mm not so wide angle and so on.
Good luck

Why buy a Canon EOS 20d camera body
Review created: 01/06/08(updated 17/09/08)

I already had some good canon USM lenses from my film cameras so for me there was little choice. It was a Canon DSLR or a whole mass of extra expense with buying lenses for a different camera body. HOWEVER, if you are thinking of moving up from a compact digital camera or from a film camera then Canon cameras are still one of the number one choices. But don't get rid of that compact just yet! There will still be lots of situations where you need a compact!

So, what do I like about the Canon 20d? The sensor produces excellent colour rendition! That's first! Canon make their own sensors and it really shows. Just check some of the 20d images on flickr to see what results you can get. There's a wide range of shooting options, but do take the time to use the higher ISO sttings on cloudy days. (programme only) Ultra quick start up from sleep. Go out for the day and just leave it on! Good battery life. Sturdy build and easy to use functions, although you WILL need to take time to learn how to employ all of them.

Canons web site has all the download information you will ever need from drivers to instruction manuals.

What do I dislike? Only that with a medium or mid range zoom lens it seems a bit quick to switch on the flash on a very dull day in full auto mode, hence the need to learn how to change ISO to 400 or higher in programme mode (P)

I own two 20d's one with a medium zoom and the other with a portrait lens. I bought both camera bodies from ebay in truly excellent condition and for no more than the cost of a very good compact or prosumer camera. I can honestly say that I have found these to be a delight to use and now scan the ads for days out where I can use them to best effect.

  Canon EOS 20D Digital SLR

I upgraded to this camera from an EOS 350D, the 350D was an excellent entry level DSLR, the 20D is a big step forward, although the camera has basically the same sensor it is of a higher quality, the camera is also a lot faster, the 5FPS shooting speed really comes in handy when shooting spot or fast action moments, I would recommend this camera to anyone already with a 350D or a 300D as an excellent upgrade, this would also make an excellent semi professional first DSLR,
only thing to remember that you need to put the money into lens, there is no point in having a camera this good and only using the kit lens (I bought the body only as I already had a selection of excellent lens). hope this helps!

Already owning a 350d I was keen for another DSLR and a obvious addition wa a second hand 20D.
I its day this was a semi pro DSLR and it has lost nothing in the intervening couple of years since its launch.
Has more settings than you will ever need as well as a very useful 250v flash pc socket so you can use all your old flash guns.
Good solid metal body means it will take a few knocks if required.

Cannot say enough to praise this camera. Especially as I picked it up with a battery grip for just over £300. Original retain was in excess of £1200.

Robust and comfortable to hold. A good substitute for the 40D if you you're short of cash.
Have used a 400D up until now and have got used to a larger LCD screen, but the 20D screen is workable.
The on/off switch is a bit fiddly.

Needed for Astrophotography. A fixed lens camera would not cut the mustard. The 20D was considered a good choice for proffesionals only a few years ago. It has a tough magnesium alloy body (unlike the 300D,350D 400D and the latest 450D which are plastic. Very user friendly menu system and operation. The automatic Dark Frame subtraction is a real boon to Astrophotographers.

I am not a huge fan of the plastic bodys of the cheaper lenses, but opticaly, the lens quality is very impressive. I could not afford the cost of the metal bodied lenses.

A little on the heavy side, but this helps absorb any vibration from the shutter. Perhaps the plastic lens keeps the over-all weight down a bit.

I am very glad with this purchase. I am sure it is going to suit my needs perfectly.

Highly recommended

A proffessional camera for compact money
Review created: 11/11/09
by:

I love my photography in my own amateurish way. I have been lucky to have some of my bumblings published in various magazines. I have also never sold any of my digital cameras, which is about to change. I have them going back to the very first. I bought the Canon EOS-20D for the same money as a quality compact. What I got was a professional quality camera which is flippin brilliant. The only downsides are the small viewing screen, (don't really care) & the limited 8.5 mp.
However, as I never intend to create house size pictures, the 8.5 is enough for my meagre purposes. Why spend thousands, when if you don't need the power of a high end camera. You can buy, what a few short years ago, was the top professional tool. Just go back & look at professional pictures taken four or five years ago. If it was good enough then, it's really superb for me now, and fantastic value. Yes. It's heavy, & won't go in your pocket, but what great pictures & colours. What can it not do? It is a real pleasure to use, solid & exudes quality.

Great pictures and flexible camera at reasonable price.
Review created: 16/09/09
by:

We just simply like Canons. My wife had powershot and wanted to upgrade to a higher level as photography is serious art for her. So we decided to go with 20D used market as we don't have enough money to buy the new one and the bottom level of Canon's DSLRs is not interesting for Canon addict. What we liked about the camera it's very solid when you're holding it and looks like very durable one. It has a lot of different settings for accurate photography especially when you know how to use the features. The quality of the picture is outstanding as it should be for this level of DSLR. We shoot in RAW and then editing photos on a notebook, night photos come very detailed and clear of hard noise even on 18-55 EF-S lens which is not very "clean". What I dislike is how the settings of the camera is displayed, it's not like 40D on the main colour screen, all the settings of 20D are only at top monochrome screen with orange backlight, when I'm talking about settings I mean Diaphragm, ISO speed, exposure correction, focusing points, etc. So the main colour screen is only for preview of the photos and for the initial camera setup. Not very convenient but as one of my friends say "just like pro", so it was a surprise for me after seen modern 1000D and 40 and 50D cameras. But I think this is the only one drawback of the camera. I've got one for 200 pounds (330 dollars) and for that price it's a real bargain. I would recommend the camera to those of you who knows what he need and who knows for what he need it.

  Brilliant camera
Review created: 16/07/09
by:

Fantastic camera. I previously owned a canon eos 300d which was a good camera at the time, and which at times produced excellent results. However there were times when it became frustrating to use and it was also slow when previewing images. This camera on the other hand is quick. Firstly, the images are superb. the preview is almost instantaneous and the flash works a treat. It is still early days yet. The seller stated that the actuation was 10,186. I have tried to get a more up to date reading, but that seems almost impossible. The camera is in mint condition. The body is solid, well built. So it should last a long while. The camera seems quite easy to use. I didn't really have to read the manual that much. The buttons are easy to get to and well placed. With a battery grip, the camera looks very professional and is well balanced in the hand and is not as heavy as it would first appear.
The price of the 20d has dropped by leaps and bounds and i was able to attach and older lens on the camera straight away.
The only downside so far is that the shutter is a little noisy, when compared to a NIKON D1x that i have. I only mention this fact because after using the Nikon i noticed the difference when i pressed the button. I didn't notice it before. However that is being pedantic. All in all a brilliant camera.

This is a great product! But it can be expensive! I'm glad I found www.freeiphoneforme.co.uk where I got mine for free :)

All I did was sign up and then completed one simple offer. I recommend the Lovefilm free trial offer as it only takes a few minutes to complete and its only a simple trial!

My personal recommendation is the Coral offer as it is quick, easy and only costs £5.

There are many other gadgets I got for free this way, such as consoles, iPhones, iPods, Plasma TV's and the list goes on and on.

Visit: www.freeiphoneforme.co.uk

I hope you enjoy the extra £££'s saved in your bank account from using www.freeiphoneforme.co.uk :)

  Canon 20D
Review created: 01/07/09
by:

Great camera. The main improvements from the 20D to the 30D, 40D and 50D are sucessively higher resolutions, larger LCD displays and a few extra bells and whistles. The 40D and 50D have auto cleaning sensors (very useful, dust is a constant issue with DSLR's) and the 50D a higher max ISO setting of 6400 (I would have liked this but can't, as yet, justify the extra cost involved). The 50D also allows you to use the LCD as a viewfinder (one of the first true DSLR's to do so). All the extra sophistication comes at a cost and used prices for the 30D/40D's are correspondingly higher than the 20D. I have had one 20D for a couple of years and a 350D (now sold) for a backup. Now prices have fallen I felt the time right to buy another 20D body and feel they offer excellent value for money at the moment.
