I have a non IS version of this lens and was quite happy with the results, and if careful it will give good results on general pictures. I was a little disappointed with landscapes and tend to use my nifty 50 (50mm F1.8).
I have just got the IS version and although I have not done any landscapes yet the other pictures I have taken are very sharp and have no shake at all.
I did a little test and took a picture of a clock at max zoom both with IS and the IS turned off without flash and the difference is very marked. I held my camera as steady as I could with the IS off and took the picture f5.6 at 1/6 sec the result was not my best. Then I took the same picture with the IS on and what a difference really quite sharp and took no effort at holding the shot.
All in all for the price this is a lens worth getting the IS makes all the difference. I was a little reluctant to get the IS considering it to be for woose,s who can,t hold a camera steady but I am sold on them now well worth the money.

  Little lens, with Big performance

Anyone thinking of buying this lens don’t hesitate go for it. It will be a very handy addition to your kit; I use it on my Canon EOS 30D. Although it is classed as an amateur lens its performance and results are excellent. One of the key points, and what we all want from a lens is clear sharp results. Another benefit of the lens is its weight, or rather lack of it, nice and light.
I’ve tried the lens on a live shoot with great results. The IS (Image Stabiliser) really does work. As for price it is a bargain, compared to its big brother the Canon 17-55 IS 2.8 Hundreds of ££££££s less.
It will be a great filler lens, until I can afford the semi pro version.
Negatives. None really. Plastic body? Maybe, but can’t complain for the price.
Overall Great little lens, with a good wide-angle zoom range, that produces nice clear sharp images, at a very affordable price.

Basic kit lens, gets you started. you soon out grow it, very light be careful the wind doesnt blow it away if you change lenses. overall if you have upgraded from a point and shoot it is a good lens to practice technique and get familiar with shooting DSLR creative modes with. you will see a much approved pictures quality from a point and shoot. sharpness is fair, cost is inexpensive. not a lens i would buy independently, but as a kit lens its great to start with something.

This is a great improvement over the mark II lens!! Cheap, IS and takes great pictures, I would seriously consider upgrading to anything other than an L lens or the 17-55mm IS.

Great lens to use for btoh manual and automatic focus, captures a very pure image
but is not so good for focusing on objects too far away, you would need a much bigger focus and depth

  Canon Lens 18-55mm
Review created: 12/09/09

This lens has transformed my photographic pictures. Having had another make of lens on my camera which I was not satisfied with, I have found the perfect match with the standard lens that originally came with the camera.

  Canon EF-S 18mm-55mm IS lens
Review created: 18/08/09

Excellent as a standared lens for any digital SLR.The Image Stabiliser is first class as it enables one to take hand held photgraphs in low light. Ideal to take pictures in museums, theatres and the like where flash photography is forbidden. The only downside is that with the image stabiliser switched on, it tends to drain the battery BUT this is a minor disadvantage as one can always switch of the image stabiliser after the photos have been taken. This is not a major problem for me.

Item was nearly 'as new' in very good condition - Purchased because I had recently bought (also on E-bay) a Digital SLR Camera Body, so needed a Lens to be able to use camera.

  Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens
Review created: 10/05/09

I needed a general purpose lens, capable of Landscape and general imaging.
Price was a constraint. I noted Canon make a number of lens's which are well outside my price range, and examined a number of reviews on the internet.
I decided to take a chance on the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens. It was not without some critical reviews on the web, but I believe Canon optics to be very capable of holding there own. I also believe a good photograph is the result of a partnership between the Photographer and the constraints of his equipment. As a General purpose lens, this one does well on most requirements. Images are Pin-sharp, typical of Canons modern lens's. I would be happy to recommend this optic as part of a collection of other lens's. It cant do everything, but that said, its very useable in the areas I require it to be.
I am not a huge fan of the plastic casings offered by Canon on lens's in this price range, but the mechanics of it are up to the mark and the optics are very good. It wont make a bad Photographer a better one, but if you use this lens as a reliable and capable general purpose lens, it does what it says on the tin.
