This review is for the non-IS version. If you're seeing this review on a listing for the IS version then search for reviews on the IS version (sorry the buyer has selected the wrong lens).
This is a cheap and cheerful lens. It covers a good range but isn't the best piece of glass in the world.
While it is a USM lens it is NOT the ring-USM, so it's slower, noisier, and has to be switched between manual and automatic modes.
The front element rotates during focussing, so you can't use petal hoods, and using polarising or graduated filters is a pain.
List price for this lens is a little over £200, but the best internet price for a new one is around £150, so be careful what you bid to on ebay.
Summary: Consider the 100-300mm USM, it's about the same price, but is optically better, has Ring-USM which is faster, and has full time manual override.
