Fantastic fast lens

This lens is a complete gem. It works exceedingly well in low light and to my mind is a worthy upgrade from the lowly 50mm f/1.8 Canon lens. The build is far sturdier, it has a metal mount, a seven leaf aperture, regular 58mm filter thread and it is nicely balanced when used with a 400D or similar camera. I really liked my f/1.8, but I have to say that this 50mm f/1.4 USM lens puts it in the shade. It has a beautiful bokeh when used on wide aperture, and takes fab photos by candlelight at ISO 1600. Well worth the price tag of approx 3 times the f/1.8, in my opinion. I paid £185 for mine, used, but in perfect condition, complete with a Hoya Pro UV filter. This lens has not been off the camera since I bought it, months ago, although I have 3 other zoom lenses. It's versatility is remarkable. A very positive addition to my photography kit. Go for it! The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens finds a home with many photographers - from pro to casual - for several reasons.
The first reason for the popularity of this Canon lens is image quality
The small size (WxL: 2.9" x 2"/73.8mm x 50.5mm) and light weight (10.2 oz/290g) are partially responsible for the popularity enjoyed by the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens. This lens is not a bother to carry mounted - or in a jacket pocket for use as needed. Overall build quality is decent but not excellent. While the metal lens mount is good, the focus ring fit and function is only adequate. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens features a quiet but not-so-well-damped Micro USM (Ultrasonic Motor) motor - this is good but not as good as the Ring USM motors in many of the higher quality Canon lenses.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens

Had been trying to get the f/1.2L version but failed, so decided to try this lens as an upgrade to my f/1.8 Mk II. I have been completely satisfied with the results from this lens, and the ability to work in lower light levels has been most welcome. It is possible I may at some time in the future look for the faster L lens, but this one is perfectly good enough for me right now ... and a lot more price friendly! To summarise, it is a worthwhile upgrade from the f/1.8 and if you don't have a 50mm lens at all a must have for the kind of photography I like to do.

I'm a proud owner of EOS 40D witch when i bought it came with EFS 17-85mm USM lens. I'we been using Canon since i ever got interested in photography so already owned standart 18-55 mm and 75-300 mm leses and this was like a obvoius next step for me.
Build quality is simply exceptional compared to consumer 50mm F1.8 and obviously because of the large aperture it is much faster if you do intend to use the available light! Combined with speedlite and/or shuterspeeds round 200-250 or on high sync over 250 and apetrure set to f 1.4 it delivers pin-sharp images.
The micro usm compared to 17-85mm usm is a little slower, but precise and can be overruned by focusig ring!
Great for portrets

Best prime lens ever had! Sharp, compact, great build... essential! Now it is always in my photo bag. I was using before canon 50 1.8 which is great as well but canon 50 1.5 is higher in every aspect: better optics, better build, better control of DOF. Must have!

Canon EF 50mm F1.4 usm lensI decided to get a fixed length lense and decided to pay the extra for the 1.4 rather than the standard 1.8 lens. If you are serious about creating great photography then this fast lens is great and worth upgrading to get the extra speed.
