Choosing to aquire a Canon Digital SLR camera was determined by the fact that I own a Canon EOS film camera, and two Zoom lenses that I discovered could be used on the digital version.

The Canon 350D is everything, and more, than I expected. So versatile in many ways and far superior to the film camera.

It is very well designed and the menus are really easy to follow and use. Every button etc. is well placed for easy access on the camera body and the good sized screen brightness settings are as good as you would want.

The quality of the images at the best setting are surprisingly good and sharp. A4 prints are very good and I am looking forward improving my technique so that I can produce images worthy of prints up to A3+.

This camera is well qualified to achieve this, and I feel confident that I will achieve MY ambition quite soon. Perhaps the addition of a Quality Canon lens or its equivalent would help in this respect.

This is my first digital slr. If I could, I would tell everyone to get a 350D. I have never had a single problem with mine. The only thing I would change is the size as its a little small for my hands, apart from that I love it! Ive owned mine for almost 18 months now and have loved every minute of it... Oh I recommend getting a sigma 17-35mm lens for it too, thats a great lens for niice landscapes!

Take care all, and if you are already thinking of getting the 350D hurry and get one now! =)

  A good beginner's DSLR

This camera formed a good transition from Canaon's EOS film cameras, which I had been familiar with. The interchangeability of the lenses was a major factor in the purchase. It represents a major step up from the compact digital cameras I had tried (Fuji, Panasonic and Nikon).
I learned that the quality of pixels is perhaps more important than the number in the specification. Though this camera has a lower pixel count than our Nikon compact, the picture quality on the Canon was significantly btter.
The controls are well laid out and fall easily to the hand, even my wife's small hands. And it's not as big as some DSLRs, something my wife greatly appreciated. One can get impressive results even from the basic setting, which is very reassuring for beginners.
I was impressed with the battery life, after seeing this as a weakness with the compact cameras I had tried. I was a little disappointed that the option of composing your shot via the rear screen is not available on this camera, but these screens are battery eaters, so you can't have it both ways.
Especially with an anti-vibration lens, the camera performed very well in a variety of conditions, indoors and out, sunshine and shade. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to switch off the pop-up flash, which can be irritating at times.
As these cameras are now discontinued, one is likely only to be able to purchase second-hand but this means that one can take a big step forward in digital photography at a very reasonable price. I can recommend the Canon EOS 350D to any keen amateur.

Very popular when new, with good reason

I have an old Canon D30, a 3-megapixel digital SLR from 2000. I decided to upgrade. The D30 was followed by the 6-megapixel D60, which is very rare on eBay, and then the 10D, 20D, 30D and 40D semi-professional SLRs. The 20D seems to be the current default choice for amateur digital Canon SLR fans, judging by its popularity on Flickr. The 30D has the same 8-megapixel image sensor and processor as the 20D, and doesn't seem worth the extra money; the 40D is new. The 10D is 6-megapixel, just like the D60. On a psychological level I think of eight megapixels being a useful sum; six megapixels is too little, ten megapixels plus isn't worth the premium for me.

Alongside their semi-pro line, Canon sells a range of consumer SLRs, the 300D, 350D, 400D, and now the 450D. Most 300D models on eBay tend to be the silver variety, which looks tacky. It's a 6-megapixel model, which seems a bit low. It also has a cut-down set of photographic features, which is a no-no for me. There is an unofficial firmware upgrade that will restore some of these features, but it hardly seems worth the bother for such an old model. The 400D is new, and the 450D isn't out yet. That rules out most of Canon's line. The professional 4-megapixel 1D MkI is relatively cheap, but too quirky for everyday use. The later 1D models, and the 5D, are very expensive.

My first thought was to go for a 20D, but I opted for the 350D instead. It has essentially the same resolution and image quality as the 20D/30D, but it is much cheaper. It's also smaller and lighter, and unlike the 300D it's generally not silver.

I can understand why the 350D is cheaper. The body is smaller and harder to hold than the 20D, it feels hollow and plastic in comparison, and the buttons on the back are wobblier and smaller. The 20D has a very useful command dial, which rotates easily but feels solid, whereas the 350D has a typical set of digital camera menu buttons. On the other hand, I haven't heard of a rash of 350D fault reports on the internet, and although the shutter is supposedly only rated for 50,000 shots the forums are hardly abuzz with angry 350D users damning Canon's parsimony.

As for the camera itself, you've probably read a bunch of professional reviews already, I will not duplicate them. The image quality is great at ISO 100, with a bit of shadow noise up to ISO 400; you could use ISO 1600 at a pinch (there is no ISO 3200 mode, and as far as I know there's no firmware hack to enable one). The camera has several custom functions, including a sort-of mirror lockup, and you can set up sharpness/contrast/saturation profiles with the menu, rather than having to download them from the PC, which is an advance over my old D30. The tripod thread is aligned with the middle of the lens. The LCD screen has a backlight, although this turns off if you press any of the control buttons, which is irritating. It uses a different, smaller kind of battery than my D30, but the batteries are dirt cheap on eBay. Start-up, image review etc are much quicker than on the D30. The handgrip is smaller, and I have to contort my pinkie to get a good grip. But the pictures have nothing wrong with them, with a good lens (the XXXD range also takes EF-S lenses).

All in all this is still a very useful SLR, and I can understand why it was so popular. It has no quirks. There's a wide range of adapters that will take old second-hand lenses from the 1970s and earlier. The batteries last several hundred shots.

I purchased this camera as it had brilliant reviews. It is a very good camera and I would recommend it to anyone from the beginner to more experienced photographer. The only problems I have found with it are with the auto focasing which tends to centre on the background rather than the subject and also the limited flash - I have however bought a very cheap flash gun which has made a huge difference. I need to spend more time playing with it but it is an excellent camera.

Many would be like me, having a digital creative compact but wishing they had not been prevented from buying an S L R by price. If so, you can study new prices and reviews and find an ebay price that is affordable.
I avoided cameras avertised as new but concentrated on good second hand models from people who are up grading to a better model
The Canon E O S 350D is a very good choice, giving first class results and is amazingly easy to use..
In my case delivery was immediate and I was amazed at the resuult the camera gave. The difference between 5 megapixels and 8 megapixals is amazing.
I am very satisfied with my new camers.

Superb camera for those entering the D SLR world for the first time, those returning after a foray into the Digital world with a small camera, or those who just want to learn real photography.

Easy and comfortable to handle. Very easy to use if you let it do all the work for you in Auto mode!
On the other hand you can have all the fun of manual settings and different lenses if you want to experiment and come up with some stunning results.

Great camera, buy extra lenses etc as your hobby progresses, this camera will handle almost all conditions you can throw at it. Very sturdy, well priced and a great DSLR.

The Canon Rebel is a great camera, fully loaded and in automatic mode very easy to use. It could do with a bigger hand grip as it is a bit small. The only draw back is it is a very technical camera once you leave auto mode, the instructions could be clearer and the onboard menu is difficult to understand.

I have used a Canon AE program 35mm camera for the last 20 years. I have been looking at going digital for the last five years. At first the prices were very high even for a EOS 300D. Ebay item number sounded very good, so I bought (without lens) a EOS 350D for £290, got the lens I wanted later. TESCOS sell the same model with 18-55mm usm for 479.96. YOu can pick up an 18-55mm usm for about 49.00 mint. Probelsm

Short and simple review on the 350D
Review created: 13/05/09

I'll keep this review short and simple.

The 350D is a great introduction to DSLR photography. It has all the controls you'll need to start learning how to shoot with a SLR camera and enough resolution to create some great images. Small, light weight and very easy to control this is a fantastic camera to start with. Huge range of lenses available to stimulate your progression.

A great buy! you'll not be disappointed for a second

Nice introduction to the world of digital SLRs
Review created: 22/12/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I did a fair amount of research taking into account available lenses, low light performance, value, image and build quality.

I've been waiting for my moment to take the plunge from super zooms to entry level SLRs, and frankly, for £160 odd quid, the EOS 350D is simply stunning value.

I quickly snapped up a working set of lenses and a flash gun, again at awesome prices, and I'm now shooting photos at the next level.

The indoor shots I can get with the 350d and the Canon f1.8 50mm, are by any standard very impressive. All in all, a very light and compact set up, with semi-pro performance, and for all told £220.

This combo picks up light and resolves detail w-a-y better than my eyes at 1600 ISO. Suprisingly there is little noise to speak of. I actually wish the firmware allowed comedy iso's like 3200 and 6400, because even though noise would be there for all to see, there are still some practial uses for me.

For some snaps, quality is not everything. Sometimes it's all about framing the shot and capturing the memory. Higher iso's would mean I could take my cheap slow zooms to a gig and get some great noisy close ups.

I was lucky enough to get a couple of entry level zooms which together cover the 35-300mm range, for a grand total of £71. There are some great bargains to be had in buying lenses for this body, due to the sheer volume and penetration of Canon EF bodies out there.

The only caveat; on purchase, the camera did not autofocus right. But with the help of the internet, 2 super small, modified allen keys and some hairy, seat of the pants moments in and around the sensor, she's tack sharp with all my lenses.

Buyers beware, the 350d does have some autofocus issues. If you're lucky and you come across a genuine seller, you'll get a good one. If you not so lucky, you'll get one like I did that was consistenly back-focussing.

However, all is not lost if this happens, as and you can sort it out with some careful tinkering. There are stories of units which are, in short, all over the shop, and by all accounts, beyond redemption.

Please, please, please, ask questions, and be careful.

Betcha can't get one that works like mine does now for £160 :)

I love eBay.

  Digital Photography at its best
Review created: 19/09/08

The Canon EOS 350D gives amatuer photographers the ability to produce professional quality without the stress.
The camera is so very versatile with modes from close up to landscape to portraits all at the turn of a dial and there is fully automatic as well.
I have been a user of the EOS 700 for many years and have the added benifit of using my old lens' with the digital body.
The program for viewing and editing can be mastered with a little effort. If I can use it with my limited knowledge of computing, then anyone can.
If you are thinking of buying a digital camera and are put off by the heavy, large cameras, then buy with confidence. It is light, compact and easy to use, yet still gives professional quality
Canon excel again

  Canon EOS 350XT Rebel
Review created: 05/01/08

1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My first dslr wasn't an impulsive buy. I researched beforehand on the net and its reviews were impressive.
My needs were quite specific - I needed an affordable camera to marry with a 10" reflector telescope for astrophotography and, so far, it hasn't disappointed.
I bought a Canon 18/55 zoom lens separately that complements the 350d well.
The combination is light, manageable and on autofocus is as simple as the point-and-shoots.
I would recommend the 350d, although how it compares to a professional camera I cannot comment, being a rank amateur myself.

I loved all of it ! A proper Canon DSLR for £200, and free extras. This camera (with a seperately purchased lens) has transformed my photography. After years in the compact camera desert, every photo is now a masterpiece. I still have my old Canon SLR, but got fed up with buying film, getting it processed etc. Digital compacts have their place, but are sometimes slow to capture a photo, and now I don't miss the action. as the Canon is instant !

Canon EOS 350D - my first SLR
Review created: 24/09/09
by:

OK, it's not as good as the 450D, 500D, 40D, etc., but it's a perfect camera for me to be my first SLR. It is affordable, and provides plenty of "bang for your buck", with more functionality than I'll use for a long time. It'd not too heavy, easy to handle and is a great step from a point and shoot to an SLR and the opportunities than all the lenses and filters provide.

For me and my needs - Excellent!

Camera arrived this morning less than two days after the auction closed. The condition is better that I expected it appears to have hardly been used, therefore in mint condition. After having been unsuccessful in quite a few auctions I am very glad that I stuck to my preset price limit. Have priced similar used 350 bodies in two local camera shops and they were asking £90+ more than my winning bid.

I am a recent convert to digital photography & and bought the 350d DSLR based on the good reviews in Consumer Which? I am not disappointed. The camera is easy to operate, the instruction manual is first class without any confusing technology.

I would with any hesitation recommend this camera to any who who is contemplating switching over from film SLR or digital compacts.
