I absolutely love this album - clever, quirky lyrics and music you can't help but dance to. My favourites: Disco Heat, the top 10 hit Acceptable in the 80s, the top 5 hit The Girls and science fiction love song Electro Man. See Calvin live if you possibly can - you'll have an amazing time!

The singles, The girls and Acceptable in the 80's are fab so I thought i'd try out the album - had a couple of listens and the other tracks don't live up to the singles. It might be a grower but so far only worthy of a 3 out of 5 for me.

ALL HAIL HARRIS, THE NEW KING OF COOL
Review created: 14/10/08

I was born in the 80's, so I was immediately accepted by Calvin Harris, apparently. Initially I loved the track "Acceptable In The 80's" but due to some... shall we call it... incessant overkill from radio and telly alike, I thought that Mr Harris had done himself a mischief and might befall the fate of many one hit wonders before him. However "The Girls" was released and I was hooked. I trotted down to my local HMV and purchased this little gem of an album and immediately became besotted with his electro synth dance music, and 'bangin' choons'. The first couple of songs seemed kind of repetitive with "This Is The Industry" reminding me of Daft Punk, and a nod to 'Visage's' "Fade To Grey" in the chorus of "Colours". It wasn't until after the two released songs "Acceptable In The 80's" and "The Girls" had finished that the album really began. First came "Neon Rocks" a proud homage to the 'Nu Rave' and when the lyrics, (“Sparking at my neon rocks/Pulling out inside pink socks”) kick in, your album has arrived. Calvin's sense of humour and sense of appreciation for the great pioneers of the great 80's dance scene shines through the whole of this tasty debut offering.. I'm not sure about Calvin Harris creating disco, but he's certainly keeping it alive!!

  one trick pony
Review created: 07/03/08

With born in the 80s and Girls, Calvin Harris deservedly earns accolades for producing some fine indie/dance tracks.

However, his old skool synths really tire on the rest of the album and he runs out of momentum in finding melody and punchy bass riffs.

Sounding like a poor mans Mylo (who sounds like a poor mans royksopp), Calvin Harris made enough of a dent with Girls and 80s to warrant interest in a second album but on that he truly must deliver at least 2 better songs
