  Cadfael DVD Collection
Review created: 07/09/09

This is a really good DVD collection and good for the entire family. There is not really any violence and nothing sexual, so makes for a great DVD for everyone!
I decided to buy it because I enjoyed the Cadfael series on television. I can't really say there is anything I don't like about it, other than I wish there were more episodes!
Anyone who remotely liked Cadfael will love this collection.

  Cadfael Condensed

I like the book series very much. I didn't expect the TV episodes to be copies exactly, but I certainly expected better. The episodes which stuck closest to the books worked well. Some were poor. The Pilgrim of Hate was butchered. Overall, I was disappointed.

I thought that Cadfael was played as an abrasive policeman, grabbing all the attention and glory. Hugh Beringar was largely sidelined and poorly presented. Having three different actors play the role didn;t help.

  More please!
Review created: 21/06/09

Brother Cadfael (Derek Jacobi) became a monk later in life, having fought in the Crusades. He keeps the monastery's herb garden and ministers to the sick. He is also the one who challenges ideas and perceptions, and solves the mysteries of Shrewsbury using the classic detective skills of common sense, logic and observation. This series is destined to become genuine classic. This is british drama at its absolute zenith: superbly written and performed by a brilliant cast.

My only complaint is that not all of the Cadfael stories by Ellis Peters were adapted for television. 13 episodes just isn't enough, please let us have more...

This box set will become a true classic, superbly written and performed this is British Drama at its best. Sir Derk Jacobi gives a memerable performance which is well support by some of britains character actors along with up and coming actors who have become houshold names since the series was made.
It is only a pity that all of the Cadfel stories where not produced.
This box set is great for all the family. A CLASSIC 10/10.

  Gentle dectecting
Review created: 06/08/08

A great collection of stories that if nothing else show that detection is more about knowing your people than application of technology.
So well acted and gentle.
You may find this undemanding and slow moving but you try to solve the riddle first. The clues are all there.
I found them very entertaining.

Watched a couple of stories on TV, and read several books, so I had to buy this. The characterisations, and settings are superb, with Derek Jacobi as the totally convincing medieval sleuth. An absolute must...

  Cadfael - The complete collection
Review created: 04/04/08

We love this collection so much that when we switched to dvd's we gave the vhs ones to a member of the family who now enjoys them. The whole family sits down to watch them it stimulates your mind and is a great way of relaxing watching how a crime is solved using herbs and old fashioned logic, We really do recommend this one the only down side is who inherites the dvd's between two avid cadfael watchers and followed closely by a third.

The little grey cells in the 12th century
Review created: 27/01/08

What a pity only 13 of the books by Ellis Peters were presented in this series. She wrote many more and I would happily buy the lot on DVD. Fabulous series.

Brother Cadfael (Derek Jacobi) joined the monastery later in life, having fought in the Crusades. He keeps the monastery's herb garden and ministers to the sick. He is also the one who challenges ideas and perceptions, and solves the mysteries of Shrewsbury using common sense, logic and observation. No fingerprints, ballistics, SOCOs or crime labs here. The pace is quite different in the 12th century, which in some ways heightens the mystery.

CADFAEL - THE COMPLETE SERIES COLLECTION
Review created: 25/01/08

I purchased this set of DVDs to form part of my TV Drama collection.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the series on the TV and was very pleased to see this set for sale at a very reasonable price. I am now going through the set one by one and again enjoying watching the classic production and excellent acting.

  Wonderfully adapted
Review created: 03/01/08

We don't have television so I had not seen these programmes. Having read all the Cadfael books by Ellis Peters, I found that these episodes are not 100% true to the books but they are most enjoyable nonetheless!
In the second story, "The Sanctuary Sparrow", it was amusing to see the corpse BREATHING while Cadfeal examined him! His paunch rose and fell visibly.
Derek Jacobi is great as Cadfael.....I was a bit disappointed with Hugh Beringer, though......not as manly as I'd imagined him from the books.

I had missed quite a few episodes as the wife dose not like it.So having brought it, i overdosed on the collection, watching it all in a few days. The acting was excellent as you would expect from Jacobi. Each episode is a complete story.Knowing a bit of the history of the time is ahelp but not essential.

  Cadfeal - The Complete Collection
Review created: 07/10/06
by:

Cadfeal is so full of atmosphere and drama that it is a joy to watch again and again. You really get a feel for the era and Derek Jacobi in the lead role is absolutely superb. Watching him solve crimes using the limited resources available to him puts modern programmes like CSI to shame. Alright he doesn't have modern gadgets to help him catch the bad guys and maybe his conclusions wouldn't stand up in a modern day court of law but it gives a realistic enough view of life in medieval times to keep the watcher entertained for hours. Cadfeal is a true champion of the underdog wether it be damsels in distress or knights in slightly tarnished armour.

  Swap to dvd, folks!
Review created: 05/08/06

I enjoy watching these Cadfael episodes so much that my old video collection - which was incomplete anyway - was wearing out. I thought, why not trade up to a dvd collection. I searched eBay and lo and behold, there was the complete set of Cadfael on dvd. Too good a chance to pass up. So I bid and won. Brilliant! And at a really good price.
I have already enjoyed a few episodes in between sunbathing and going on holiday. Have a go yourself and get exactly what you want, when you want it adn at a price you're willing to pay. Try eBay!
