Would I go back and watch this film again if I could?

The plot; Ashton Kutcher suffers from blackouts and memory loss and it's all to do with a troubled childhood. He discovers that when re reading his old diaries he is somehow transported back in time and has the ability to change past events. But everytime he changes the past, the present gets amended with unpredictable results.

Okay sounds good. But this movie is a bit of a parody because I didn't particularly enjoy watching it but I keep on meaning to put some time aside to watch it again and lots of other people seem to like it so it must have something. I'm not exactly sure what that is though as although starting off promising the story quickly dissapears up its own metaphorical time hole and becomes almost laughable. There's generally a bit of a wooden predictable performance from everyone envolved but Kutcher in particular is rubbish, although when you consider some of the scenes he is expected to act in (the amendmends to the 'present' get more and more outrageous and unbelievable as the film progresses) I think any actor would struggle. The scene where it cuts from his character narrowly escaping a violent unwanted buggry in jail to suddenly waking up in bed a paraplegic with no arms and no legs is particularly sublime in it's naffness. Overall I would say a ten out of ten for effort but a big fat zero for accomplishment. Watchable, not really really bad or anything, but not neccesarily all that enjoyable either. Only for hard core fans of the time travel genre, fans of Kutcher or those who just want to have a laugh at him as he 'acts' out having repeated nosebleeds.

  Cool Movie

This film is an unsung masterpiece.
It is about the main character who has the ability to travel back in time,to his childhood, and rectify what he believed were mistakes he had made.
The problem being that after rectifying the mistakes everything changes and never for the better.
The first time you watch this film you will spend a while thinking "what is going on",but finally it hits you and everything falls into place.
The second time you watch this film you will spend a lot of time watching out for all the things that you missed the first time around.
The one thing that did annoy me was,the first time I watched it I saw the normal version.
The second time I watched the directors cut.
They unfortunately didnt have the same ending, and although there are 4 alternate endings on the directors cut, none are the same as the normal version.
But this is a very small thing and the overall rating rating of this film is,"absolutely superb, unmissable"!

Even though a lot of reviews rate this film very low in stars, like most films my opinion often contradicts their own conclusion. But I highly suggest anyone that has never seen this film to watch it, it has a clever story line and brilliant acting.

I love this film and watched it 3 times, what i like about it is that if things in your past has been wrong that you can keep going back to change the outcome but with every visit back and changing events you get different outcomes and the child abuser in this film really did need things changed for a good outcome, only wish most folk could change bad things from the past and we would all feel better. A fab film and i would say to anyone that it is worth watching.

Brilliant film! I bought it because I had mentioned its plot in a book I have just written and thought I should watch it!
Came very fast and as described, and it was an awesomely constructed piece of cinema. The central premise is a fascinating one; can a tiny change in the past affect the future? Of course, it will be in ways that you never anticipate, and the stunning ending leaves you reeling. Highly recommended - this film will entertain you and make you think - the perfect combination.

  Captivating, complicated & quirky!
Review created: 21/02/09

I watched part of this when on tv but was too tired to watch - I knew it was one I had to see & searched for it on ebay. It really is a great film, I thoroughly enjoyed it but it is a little complicated and you need to concentrate, as Evan (main character) is recalling memories from different ages throughout the film - if you can keep up! you will love this quirky film which shows you that the slightest changes to history can have a catastrophic effect.

The Butterfly Effect - Directors Cut
Review created: 03/09/08

is a piece of science-fiction cinema grounded in the gritty realities of life. The script is complex and intertwining, but unlike other "time-travel" films every line of it is justified, every word of dialogue is a block in the wall - remove one and it all falls down. A short description would be: a very powerful, moving film that will not fail to deliver. A rollercoaster of emotion and intrigue. Well directed, very well written and unmissable.
The cast have done a tremendous job...Aston does very well in his first dramatic venture.
I'm not much on reviews but i'm good at honesty and honestly, you need to see this film...and not the one with the happy sappy (seen in the cinemas) ending. It ruins the integrity of the piece and leaves you wondering the point of the last hour and a half. SEE THE DIRECTORS CUT; it finishes the film in such a perfect way and makes it whole.

Aston plays Evan, a 20 year old man who recently went seven years with no black-outs. He as a child has numerous black-outs which more or less happened at key moments in his life. While at college, Evan figures out a way to remember his black-outs and return to his past and even change it and his future. After a number of times of trying to win his long love Amy smart (Kyli) he never gets the life he wants and even ends up in prism in one life and physically disabled in another. After it all he decides he knows what he has to do. The movie story and idea is genious. It makes everyone watching think, what would happen if i did something different today. The drama in the movie is REALLY good. Aston is not known for his acting skills but this movie really shows that he is capable of a serious role in the future.

The Butterfly Effect - fantastic must see film!

Evan Trehorn (Ashton Kutcher) is a college student who has suffered from blackouts and memory loss since childhood. He is tormented by repressed childhood memories and visualises his best friend and first love, Kayleigh (Amy Smart) as a child, whose father is a pedophile and whose brother has a sadistic streak. When Evan discovers that he can travel back in time, he realises that he can change things also. He soon discovers that a minor change can have a massive effect further along the chain and that playing God has its fair share of problems. This thrilling film has so many twists and turns it keeps you hooked from the start to finish! You wont believe what will happen next! As a student studying mental health I found this to be facinating, as you explore the mind of the young boy and the man he becomes. It is a fantastic insight into how mental health problems can develop, a must see film but expect a roller coaster of emotions as you feel sad, angry and sometimes even scared! Brilliant!

The butterfly effect is a film based upon a boy/man growing up that needs help from blacking out and losing his memory. It is an utterly fantastic journey with Ashton Kutcher leading great stars through his life. I bought the film for me and a friend to show my friend how good the film was. If you like films that leave you guessing with mystery action and some humor then this is perfect for you!!

  Nothing short of genius!
Review created: 13/03/07

I watched this film not truly knowing what to expect, the plot interested me enough to take a chance and buy it.
Plot
Ashton Kutcher discovers a way to travel back in time to specific parts of his life. He does this to try and improve the life of a childhood friend as well as his own but each change has repurcussions on the future causing him to wish to go back again and "fix it".
Very clever film and one you have to pay attention to, pure genius. Fantastic performance by Amy Smart in particular who, through the actions of Ashton's character, plays multiple variations of hers. This film is thought provoking and well put together, if you can get the directors cut then please do as this has an alternate ending which again gets your mind going.

I hope this review is useful to you.

Highly interesting and thought provoking. This was a very good film which makes you thin about the possibilities that are about, all the different scenarios that occur due to small little changes are very interesting too. I would recommend this film to anyone. A bit deeper than one would first think.

Butterflies ain't as beautiful as this masterpiece!!!

It takes only a film to offer a different perspective about life, 1 movie to adapt on the choas theory's endless possibilities. If you could sit back and watch 1 man tamper with destiny and suffer the consiquences, would you like to witness it? What cant be done, can be done in movies, but what if every time you dont remember something doesnt just become a lost memory, but a portal through time to replay the events of the past?

If you could see this film, would you?
If you could like this film, would you?

OH HELL YEA!!!!!!!!!!

When I was first told about this film I never expected to find myself buying it and watching it, but buying it was a good decision.

With trips through time to change his past, Evan Treborn (played by Ashton Kutcher) changes his, aswell as his friends futures. This results in a mass of problems for himself, especially when his friends get hurt because of the changes. In the end, it becomes too much and Evan decides to make a final change.. hopefully for the better.

The storyline is fairly easy to follow, but I have known people to be left wondering what had happened in parts. But even so the film is enjoyable and good to watch again. Definately worth buying if you enjoy films with psychological thrills, still a good buy even if you don't.
