Jazz fans of a certain age will recall the East Coast/West Coast schism prevalent in the 1950's (and early `60s), which basically went: East Coast jazz, great; West Coast, less so. Alto saxophonist and flutist Bud Shank was one of the players on the western side of the divide, and the two-CD PACIFIC JAZZ YEARS illustrates how foolish all that East/West business really was. While Shank indeed could play in a cool, offhand manner, he could also burn and swing with the best of them. Claude Williamson also proves himself to be an ace pianist in the classic bebop mold of Bud Powell and Al Haig. West, east, north, or south, Shank was one of jazz's very best alto specialists.
