While Chenier stayed close to the Zydeco tradition, Dural's brand of New Orleans music stretches to encompass R&B, funk, and rock & roll. Released at the height of Dural's initial popularity, ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS is a definitive statement. His accordion style emphasizes feel over flash, and even when he's engaging in a squeezebox workout over a furious tempo, as on the R&B-inflected highlight "Hot Tamale Baby," he never feels the need to show off his chops. Equally impressive is Dural's singing style, a homey mix of New Orleans flavor and bluesy grit. Ever the eclectic, he guides his band through Zydeco versions of the Blasters's Chuck Berry-like "Marie Marie," Bob Dylan's countryish "On a Night Like This," and Booker T & The MG's soul instrumental "Time is Tight" with equal aplomb.
