Powerhouse Performances From Freeman and Nicholson
Review created: 10/06/08

"It's a full-bodied brew, blended out of equal parts comedy and drama...[with] a pair of powerhouse performances from Freeman and Nicholson."

In THE BUCKET LIST, cancer doesn't discriminate in its choice of victims. It's equally eager in its attacks on kindly sage of a mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) and mean-spirited millionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson). When the unlikely pair shares a room at a hospital, they learn that they both have less than a year to live as a result of the deadly disease. Inspired by the words of a college professor, Carter begins to make a "bucket list" of things he wants to accomplish before he dies. With Edward's limitless funds at their disposal, the men embark on an adventure that takes them from Egypt to France to Hong Kong, crossing items off their list as death grows closer. Fans of the leading actors will be glad to see them in familiar territory: Freeman plays a narrator who's nearly godlike in his omniscience, while Nicholson stars as the lovable grump. Both men have won Oscars for similar roles (Nicholson for AS GOOD AS IT GETS, and Freeman for MILLION DOLLAR BABY), so they excel in these parts. Director Rob Reiner's career has jumped between comedy and drama, and despite its serious subject matter, THE BUCKET LIST resides firmly in comedic territory. But fans of weepies such as TERMS OF ENDEARMENT and MY LIFE will find much to like in this film that is sure to require a tissue or two.

  Beautiful, moving and thought-provoking genious

Recommended by family and friends I was pursuaded to purchase The bucket List admitidally after being impressed by the movie trailer some time ago but for some unknown reason I failed to act earlier. The result is that this movie is a firm favoruite among my DVD collection and lives long in the memory for it's touching storyline.

Jack Nicholson plays a company billionaire who has had several failed marriages and plays through life blowing his money on anything that might make him feel better. Morgan Freeman is the greasemonkey mechanic, a loyal husband and family man.

Despite their very different backgrounds they both share something in common - they are both very sick and have been given months to live. The two parties react quite differently to the news; more so because Freeman has his wife and children whereas Nicholson is lonely but for his money and daughter with whom he has not seen for many years.

After being placed side by side in the hospital in which nicholson owns, a beautiful friendship develops between the pair and blossoms after Nicholson accidentally discovers Freeman's "Bucket List"; this being a list of things that he wishes to do before "kicking the bucket".

Nicholson convinces Freeman to be a bit more adventurous with his bucket list and the pair end up doing the daring, crazy and exciting things which they scribbled onto the small sheet of paper.

Be prepared for an immensely sad ending to this story which is almost certain to bring a tear to even the strongest of characters.

It's not all sad though; the director has cleverly fitted in some very good humour and there are certainly some side-splitting moments spread throughout the bulk of the movie.

This movie is absolutely brilliant in how it addresses an issue which effects us all - the time we have to live and what we do with it.

Faultless sotryline, amazing acting from both main characters and very well directed. You'll fall in love with this classic and maybe rethink your life a little as a result... I know I have.

Without doubt a compulsory purchase - 5 stars.

The Bucket List, Nicholson & Freeman at their best!!!

When Edward Cole, discovers that he has cancer he is given a bed alongside another patient, Carter Chambers, in his own hospital. These two personalities appear to be worlds apart, and yet, surprisingly they will go on to share the most amazing journey of their lives. How far do they travel, physically, mentally and emotionally? You will HAVE to watch to find out.

This film makes the heart warm, the body ripple with laughter and the soul cry.

I love these two actors, but this film is truly one of their most amazing films! I give this a first class rating!!!

Absolutely loved this film, totally agree with the other reviewer's points that its a film in which the two main characters are doing exactly what they do best and the film is fabulous for it.

No need for me to delve too deeply into the plot as its has been done so well before me, two very different me pushed together by cancer end up in the same room in hospital. This is a story of them attempting to fulfull their dearest dreams before the big C completely takes hold.

I would recommend anyone to watch this film, its a film which pulls the heart strings of all ages, both myself and my ten year old daughter sobbed at the end.

Will watch again and again and consider this film a must have for all family collections.

D

Having watched this film when it was released first time around, knew that this was one for the collection! Brilliant acting by both Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in a bitter-sweet comedy with a powerful message. If you haven't seen it yet, would thoroughly recommend it!

Corporate billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and working class mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) have little in common, or so it seems. At a crossroads in their lives, they share a hospital room and discover that surface differences (and sheer contempt) aside, they have a deep desire to experience the best that life has to offer, before they 'Kick the Bucket'. They write a joint 'Bucket List' and embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

A hilarious and deeplt touching tale, the film charts their journey accross continents, to building a friendship and discovering their own identities.

With co-stars like these, it's hardly surprising that this was going to be a quality film. Morgan Freeman plays the part of dutiful family man, while Jack Nicholson is at his smug, sarcastic best. Each shows the other the life they have missed. Heartwarming, very funny, make sre you have your hankies ready for the lovely but moving end. This one's to keep and watch again.

I bought this DVD because I like Jack Nicholson movies and Morgan Freeman was a bonus. However, I was a bit disappointed with the comedy, compared to his other films and felt some of the scenes fell a bit flat. The whole film seemed a bit manufactured, ticking off a list, but it had its moments.
My friend thought it was great, so there's no accounting for taste.

I bought this dvd as I had seen adverts for it on the tv & it certainly lived up to my expectations. It was well acted and belly-rumblingly funny. It was poignant at times yet had me in stitches. Well good & thoroughly recommended.

THIS WAS A FILM I WANTED TO WATCH FOR A WHILE BUT NEVER GOT ROUND TO IT UNTIL LAST WEEK. IF YOU HAVE EVER WATCHED A FILM CALLED THE CHAMP (AN OLD FILM FROM THE 80'S) THEN YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. THIS FILM IS SUPERB. PLENTY OF ACTION WITH AN EXCELLENT STORY LINE. BUT BEWARE OF THE ENDING! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A HANKY (OR TISSUES) AT THE READY!

  Brilliant film

I missed seeing this in the cinema due to my husbands ill health so decided to watch it much later on DVD. It made me laugh out loud as Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson are excellent actors, and they made a brilliant team. It also made me cry because this film shows the real down side of the cancer treatment in all its glory. I might have found it more funny had I not had to watch my husband go through it. Having said all that I'm glad I watched it as its a great film, though I dont think I would recommend it to anyone who has suffered from cancer as I think the memories would be too painful.

  THE BUCKET LIST
Review created: 02/11/09

Wasn't too sure about this film.... loved the acting I expected no less from the great Freeman and Nicholson. The story line was way over the top, more like lets see how much money we can spend having outrageous fun while we still have time, without the ones we love! BUT definitly loads of humour, which helped eased the film back to reality and in the end to what the story was about...the kicking of the bucket!

  Cheerfully depressing
Review created: 20/10/09

Well it's not often you get a comedy about a couple of terminal victims is it? The film pulls off the comedy/tragedy fusion quite well I thought. I didn't enjoy it as much as the friends who recommended it but it's not really my kind of film but I had to watch it to see the Nicholson/Freeman combo.

One bucketload of a good film!
Review created: 11/09/09

When this film first hit our screens, I took one look at the cast and went to see it. Any film starring both Morgan Freeman AND Jack Nicholson, two of my favourite actors of all time, just had to be worth seeing. I wasn't disappointed. Brilliant performances from both, combined with a funny, touching, moving and very poignant script and great direction/production means it's a 'must see'. Shortly after seeing the film I decided it was one that I could definitely watch over and over. For me, some films are like that - e.g. Shawshank Redemption (Morgan Freeman) and As Good As It Gets (Jack Nicholson). So I purchased the DVD. After seeing it again on a somewhat smaller screen, I loved it just as much. If you love either or both of these actors, buy this DVD - you will not be disappointed.

  Simply a beautiful film....
Review created: 28/04/09

I watched this film on television after My son recommended it to Me,him knowing My love of "soppy films"....he described it as "My kinda film".He wasn't kidding!
It starts off quite humourous considering the subject matter of the film, both Edward (Jack Nicholson) and Carter (Morgan Freeman) find themselves in the same room at one of Edwards' hospitals, there is friendly banter between them which will make you laugh....but don't feel guilty because the film will grip you through their travels to far away countries while they work to complete their Bucket List.....The ending is one of the best I've seen in a long time,I don't want to give the game away....but I measure the quality of a good drama on it's ability to provoke emotions from the viewer.....and I was reaching for the tissues like you wouldn't believe!
It is a fantastic film,I defy anyone to watch it and not feel for those two characters...It is simply a beautiful film....you'll be hard pushed to find one more beautiful than this one.
I hope you find this helpful, thank you for reading....enjoy the film but have some tissues handy.....you WILL need them!
