Album Notes
The Brunettes: Heather Mansfield (clarinet); Jonathan Bree (bass guitar).Additional personnel: Dionne Taylor (lap steel guitar); Harry Cundy (trumpet); Jamie Power (drums); James Milne, Ryan Mcphun, William Cotton (background vocals). After a long stretch of high-profile opening slots for the likes of the Shins, Rilo Kiley, and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, and a handful of records released in their native New Zealand, the Brunettes go for their American breakthrough with STRUCTURE AND COSMETICS, a breathtaking revision of Zombies-style harmonies and '60s girl-group pop. The recipe--simultaneously sultry and detached, with intricate melodic structures, layered instrumental arrangements a la Van Dyke Parks, and meticulous playing and production--breaks no new ground. But when harmonies are as alluring as Heather Mansfield's and Jonathan Bree's and the songs are this good, who cares... Looking for fantastic girl group revisionism... The Brunettes are the place to start.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- Heather Mansfield and Jonathan Bree inject their twee aesthetic with psychedelic flourishes both buoyant and shadowy.
