Jim Carrey returns to big comedy in a story about a man given God's powers. Plenty of laughs, but, alas, also a message. Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman co-star, the latter as God
Oh, glory be! After years of pursuing an Oscar, Jim Carrey has decided to go back to trying to make the world laugh. Admittedly, this won't sound like a great idea to everyone, but even those with a pathological hatred of Carrey's brand of comedy would agree that a return to his roots has to be better than another simpering sentimental drama along the lines of 2001's The Majestic.

Bruce Almighty is actually a lot more than a mere improvement on Frank Darabont's massive misfire. It's a simple tale. Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan, a television news reporter with a grudge against pretty much everything and everyone, except his girlfriend, Grace (Aniston). After a particularly bad day at the office, Bruce rails against God (Freeman, inspired casting) who responds by bestowing His powers upon Bruce and then tells him to get on with the business of running the universe for a day.

It's a situation ripe with comic possibilities, and after an awkward first 20 minutes where Carrey seems to be seeing whether his comedy pants still fit, the gags come pretty thick and fast. And while Aniston is lumbered with the same thankless role that fellow Friend Courtney Cox had in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Freeman proves that comedy is well within his range.

While Carrey's performance is fine (he gurns, he shouts, he overplays - his usual shtick), there are numerous references to his other films, a miscalculation as they simply leave you wishing you were watching those movies instead. The presence of experienced screen actors such as Freeman and Philip Baker Hall (Magnolia, Hard Eight) also works slightly against the leading man. The performances of these old hands prove the maxim that less can sometimes be more - a principle Carrey ignores here. br>
Worst of all, however, is the fact that Bruce Almighty isn't content to be a comedy. No, it has been decided that we must learn something about life before we are allowed to leave the auditorium, which means our laughs come with a huge dose of saccharine. Of course, schmaltz has been part of the Jim Carrey cinema-going experience before. Here, director Shadyac - he's the guy who ladled syrup all over Patch Adams - isn't content to simply serve up sentiment, rather he seems to wants to tie state and the Almighty together. If you're one of those people who winces whenever anyone says "God bless America", skip the last reel and save your soul.

Verdict
Far from heaven-sent, but while Bruce Almighty lacks the darkness of The Cable Guy and the consistency of Dumb & Dumber, Carrey is good value, and, provided you can stomach the sentiment, you'll be delighted to discover that the laughs haven't been rationed.

Welcome to high concept heaven, where Jim Carrey is God.

Hacked off with life and frustrated at work, Carrey's failed reporter, Bruce, rages at the man upstairs. So much so that the divine dogooder (Morgan Freeman) offers him his powers, to see if he can do any better.

Supernaturally supercharged, Bruce takes on TV, landing the epithet 'Mr Exclusive' for his astounding stories. But power and popularity go to his head, as do millions of prayers that demand to be answered. Just saying "yes" has unforeseen consequences, while he's in danger of losing good Grace (the excellent, underused Jennifer Aniston).

So, sanctimony with a side order of laughs, then? Not quite, on either count. "Bruce Almighty" may be too saccharine for some, but it's mostly a smart, surprisingly thought-through blockbuster, with a decent grasp of the theological implications of its idea.

Freeman makes a, um, good God, dispensing wit and wisdom without ever appearing pious. And while on one level it's grotesque to chuckle as a well-off Westerner uses omnipotence to serve self, it's a subtle societal critique that it never occurs to Bruce to think of others.

As with most God-bothering Hollywood movies, Jesus is notable by his absence. But then, the idea of Carrey whipped bloody and nailed to a cross would only appeal to those who endured "The Majestic".

The actor appears to be aware that his comeback to comedy might be welcomed after such self-consciously serious efforts. There's a quaint subtext of self-justification, as Bruce comes to terms with being a light entertainer, just as the actor is.

Unfortunately, any comparison with the similarly themed "Sullivan's Travels" must end there, for the pressing problem with "Bruce Almighty" is the lack of large laughs. Amusing as it is, there's none of the side-slashing hilarity of Carrey-coms "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" or "Dumb and Dumber".

The star's schtick is only intermittently engaging, while the laughs subside to smirks as time ticks on. Neither awful or guffaw-ful. Less almighty. More alrighty.

OVERALL, A VERY FUNNY FILM THAT WILL KEEP YOU LAUGHING FOR HOURS!
DONT MISS OUT... WATCH IT!!

After not seeing Jim Carey in the movies for a while Bruce Almightly was a god send (Excuse the pun) Seriously he went a bit quiet for a while until Bruce was released and I know a lot of people had their reservations saying he was getting old and loosing his touch but this film totally shows Jim Carey in all his Glory. An excellent story line maybe a little far fetched but thats what movies are all about. So many parts of this film made me laugh out loud especially when he makes Even Baxter look mental on live TV. Definately worth buying I love this film

Laugh master Jim Carrey is at his outrageous best in this side-splittingly funny comedy that proves beyond a doubt that heaven has a sense of humour.
Despite his popularity and the love of his girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston), local TV reporter Bruce Nolan (Carrey) doesn't think that the world is treating him fairly.
Then after his worst day ever, Bruce angrily rants against God for ruining his life and mismanaging the universe.
So God (Morgan Freeman) responds....and endows Bruce with all of his powers to see if Bruce can do a better job.

From the hit-making director of Liar Liar, and the writer who brought you The Nutty Professor...all hilarity breaks loose when a little divine intervention lets the always unpredictable Jim Carrey spend a week playing God!

Great movie, Jim Carrey at his best!

For over a decade, Jim Carrey has been host to some of the most remarkably memorable characters on screen. From his debut as Ace Ventura, wacky superhero The Mask, to the juvenile Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber. There has never been a doubt that the rubber-faced comedian was always a smash hit when his next film came out.

Unfortunately, maturity has taken some of the spark out of Carrey's performance, no longer content with being the clown, his career has turned to dramas like The Truman Show or the extremely bland Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. Liar Liar had started to hint at Jim wanting more serious roles to play and soon that would all come true.

Bruce Almighty has everything you could ask for from a Jim Carrey movie, its got a fantastic concept, there are many memorable scenes, great dialogue and fun for the family. Here, Carrey gains the powers of the almighty Lord, in attempt to show he can help the world much better.

The casting is almost see-saw on Bruce Almighty, Carrey is fantastic as ever, Morgan Freeman gives an unusual silly performance as God (considering he's done films like Shawshank Redemption), and Jennifer Aniston brings a more dramatic performance as Bruce's girlfriend. Steve Carrell as Evan Baxter certainly in some people's minds steals the show halfway through the movie.

Of course, in my mind, apart from the concept, everything here feels like a re-run of Liar Liar, particularly in the way the film unravels itself. It starts out with hilarious scenes, then the main plot comes out, and by the end Carrey goes all dramatic. I have to say I don't approve of Carrey's drama performance considering his background, and thankfully there is a moment during the performance that brings it back to life.

Having said all that, Bruce Almighty is a wonderfully light-hearted comedy that should please all of the family, and even if it's not a patch on his older material, there is no denying that no does comedy like Jim Carrey.

Buy Now! Its Gooooooood!

  Typically Carrey.....which is typically good

This film contains Jim Carrey, which to me, is a stamp of approval, even before I've watched it. It also stars Morgan Freeman, another tremendous actor, and another clue to how good the film will be.
I settled down at the cinema to watch this on its 3rd day of release, for the simple reasons of the stars it featured. I ended up seeing a film with a lot of humour, and an excellent waste of 2 hours, which, to be honest, is what films are designed to do.

Basically, it features Bruce Almighty (Jim Carrey), a TV news anchorman, who keeps getting given the worst stories to report on, and after a particularly bad day, he rants and raves to God, who promptly invites him to take over the job. Bruce then uses this powers to turn his life around, before realising that maybe, not even God's powers can help him.

A hilarious film, typical Carrey, which also features Freeman as God, and the ever gorgeous Jennifer Aniston (Rachel in Friends) as Bruce Almighty's partner.

The film's only failing was in its potential aim to get across a philosophical message to the viewers, but when the film's this funny, I don't really care. A great addition to Carrey's portfolio next to Ace Ventura, and really, the greatest compliment I could hand this film is that it now replaces Ace as my favourite Carrey film.

'...and that's how the cookie crumbles!'

I sat down fully expecting a below-par effort from Jim Carrey, going on what I had previously heard/read of this film, but I am very glad to say I was oh so wrong! This has got to be one of the funniest films I have watched over the past few months. The occasional set pieces are excellent, and the gags flow thick and fast (although not as fast as some of his films!).

Compared to Carrey's earlier films such as The Mask and Dumb & Dumber, for example, this film is a much calmer, less madcap experience. Not to say it doesn't have the occasional classic Carrey moment, it just seems like a good, wholesome comedy.

Jim Carrey is as good as ever, but manages to hold back with the usual gurning and odd noises (some people may say this is a good thing!). He manages to switch from serious-mode to fool-mode with ease, and truly makes this film his.

Jennifer Aniston coped well with her role, and should easily make a name for herself as something more than ‘her out of Friends’. I know she isn’t on screen nearly half as much as Carrey, but she still manages to put across the character she is portraying with ease.

Now Morgan Freeman was a fantastic casting choice as God. The man is a living legend and seems to relish playing the Almighty one himself! A top rate performance as ever.

The script itself is pretty good, but wouldn’t have worked, I feel, had it not been Jim Carrey taking the lead role. It was a little patchy in places I suppose, but no major flaws on the whole.

The few special effects involved were very clever indeed. I’ll be sending a hefty pat on the back to the people behind them for one scene in particular (I won’t tell you any more than that otherwise I’ll spoil it!).

The only negative thing I have to say about this film is that the slightly mushy bit of the plot revolving around Bruce’s relationship with Grace tends to detract from the overall feel of the film. Although I must say it was nowhere near as bad as the cringeworthy sub-plot in Liar Liar! If it was removed from the film I think it would be all the better for it to be honest. Surely a film can have a ‘rise & fall’ plot without a slushy Hollywood-favoured sentimental addition?

Definitely recommend adding this to your DVD collection!

No matter whether or not you are a religious person, this movie will have you in stitches. Undoubtedly one of Jim Carrey's best movies, he runs the show as God's holiday replacement. Watch out for his little dance routine to "I Got The Power" and the way he deletes millions of prayer requests on his computer!!! I loved it! Highly recommend!!! Comedy with a serious bottomline.

Wouldn't you like to have all the powers to make your world a better place? Bruce Nolan, played wonderfully by Jim Carey, gets that chance when God hands over the batton.

Although I dislike many films starring Jim Carey - this one is like none other. It is hilariously funny throughout and it is one film that the whole family can enjoy over and over again!

This is a great film - I actually bought it for my first year Religious Moral education class! It just makes them think a little in a humourous setting. Its lighthearted but with a good 'ol moral for good measure. The characters / actors are well chosen and work well together. Carey is in good form. Some hilarious, silly moments.

  Great comedy
Review created: 09/04/09

Bruce Almighty is a great film. It has comedy as well as a storyline. Bruce is typical of someone whose life goes wrong and seems to think God doesn't care. He thinks he could do more than God does to help people so is given the chance...... Without going further to ruin the story this film has some funny moments where Bruce plays at being God. An amusing story. Jennifer Aniston plays the part well of being his devoted partner. Also worth watching Evan Almighty the sequel although I feel Evan Almighty seems more serious and doesn't have so many laughs, probably because of the lack of Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston which really make the film Bruce Almighty. Evan Baxter in this is the same actor who is in Evan Almighty.
