Brokeback Mountain
Director: Ang Lee
Starring: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal

You can almost see the Hollywood mogul checking his list of attributes required for an Oscar-winning film: big-name talented director? Check. Young, fresh actors as yet unrecognised by the Academy? Check. Worthy theme regarding some social inequality or intolerance? Check. Ponderous, epic shots of scenery, heart-breaking resolution, decade spanning storyline? Check, check, check.

Ang Lee's latest film has Academy Award Nomination written all over it. The tale of the forbidden love of two cowboys who first met in the 60's mid-west sheep-herding is a poised if ponderous film of undoubted depth and subtlety. There are the slow takes of the Wyoming mountains, drawn-out drawls of dialogue and tackling of tough topics. A solid if unspectacular performance by Heath Ledger anchors the film but it is Jake Gyllenhaal's turn as his lover and challenger that is truly deserving of the plaudits. By turns understated and explosive, Gyllenhall shows his strength and depth of acting chops, stealing every scene he's in.

Although this film is slower than a sheep on sedatives it manages to instill a real sense of emotional and philosophical depth through it's monosyllabic protagonist. Ang Lee's directorial style is as epic and encompassing as ever, accentuating the nuances of E. Annie Proulx's original short-story with a social commentary and sensitive communication harking back to Lee's debut feature The Ice Storm.

Brokeback Mountain is a rewarding, eloquent and emotive film destined for Oscar success. And Gyllenhall and Ledger sure do make a helluva sweet couple.

Synopsis
Based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author E. Annie Proulx, 'Brokeback Mountain' is the tragic and moving story of two cowboys who unexpectedly fall in love while working together one summer in 1963. When the film begins, rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and ranch-hand Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are strangers meeting for the first time. As the more outgoing one, it is Jack who must initiate a friendship with Ennis, a man so tight-lipped and self-consciously macho he refuses all facial expression. From this strained beginning, Jack and Ennis gradually begin to bond on cold lonely nights over a fire in the mountains of Signal, Wyoming. One particularly chilly evening, Jack invites Ennis into his tent, where a sudden awkward embrace sends their relationship in a new direction. Though each man stubbornly defends his heterosexuality, the spark between them cannot help but grow, with that initial summer on Brokeback Mountain becoming their reference point for happiness during the rest of their lives. Spanning 20 years, the film moves at an impressively slow pace that really captures the detailed and unhurried style of Proulx's story. Seeing each other a few times a year at best, Ennis and Jack spend the rest of their time halfheartedly living up to society's expectations by marrying and having kids. When the lovers do meet, there is a sense of love so palpable and frustrating it often manifests itself in physical violence. Gyllenhaal shines as the film's hopeful light, and Ledger gives a powerful performance as the emotionally blocked Ennis. Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee captures the natural beauty of Wyoming and Texas with camerawork that, while beautiful, never feels imposing. Gustavo Santaolalla's simple yet haunting score helps to complete a beautiful portrait of regret and wasted chances.

Review

Outstanding acting, outstanding story, outstanding directing, outstanding filming - this movie is simply a masterpiece, and it compromises at nothing. Heath Ledger probably has the role of his life in this movie - who would have believed he could act like this? - and Jake Gyllenhaal actually outshines him in his role - he should deffinitely have had the academy award for best supporting act, rather than George Clooney for his fair but not overly impressive role in the otherwise excellent Syriana. Ang Lee desserved the Academy Award for best directing - once again - and the Academy - once again - failed to make a political stand by giving this movie the award for best film of the year. Crash was good, but no way as good as this one. See this - and be moved to tears.

Not just a Gay Cowboy Movie !
Review created: 22/06/06

Contrary to what many people think, this is not a "gay cowboy" movie. It happens to be much more than that. It shows the trials and emotions of an impossible love situation, and the problems with having to keep it secret.

The two lead actors, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, are superb. They seem so natural and convincing in their roles, and you come away almost believing these characters are real. Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway are superbly cast as their wives.

I was a bit sceptical about watching the film in the first place, but soon put any reservations aside. It is unusual for me to get emotional when watching a film, but I was almost in tears in places. The scenery is stunning, and adds a certain amount of romance to the story. I feel the film wouldn't have worked as well if it had been set elsewhere. The climate and weather is skillfully included in the picture, and plays a vital role in the storyline.

I believe this is one of Ang Lee's finest films. He handles the subject matter with great sensitivity. Annie Proulx should be congratulated for the origonal short story, and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana have done an amazing job in writing it into the screenplay.

Although I did infact find that the second part of the film dragged on somewhat, and some of the speech was difficult to hear, I think overall it is one the finest films to come out of America in recent times.

Good film, beautiful scenery but soooooo overhyped! The most frustrating aspect was Heath Ledger's constant mumbling which meant I missed half the dialogue. In fact the sound mix was generally very poor with many scenes ruined by the sound effects being much louder than the dialogue.

No need to go into the storyline as there wasn't one. This is quite possibly one of the worst movies I have watched in a looonnngg time! Why this movie was nominated for any award is beyond me.

I went to the cinema to see this film and although it was slightly shocking at first, it actually turned into a really good film. the actors init were brilliant as there wasn't anything they didn't do in the film. Ok it might have been doubles of them doing some of the scenes but it was still really good. I found it quite sad that they couldn't be how they wanted to be, they had to hide their feelings.

I decided to buy this DVD as I am a fan of the late Great Heath Ledger, and because I had read "rave" reviews of the film. I was not disappointed, the film is a masterpiece! Apart from the story itself, which is achingly realistic in it's portrayal of "forbidden" love and the heartbreak and disruption that this causes, not just to the two main characters, but to those around them, there is the beautiful scenery and stunning photography.I also liked the way in which the story was told over many years, I felt as if I knew the characters and could empathise with them! I can't think of anything which I disliked about the film,it was a very positive experience and one which will stay long in my mind.

I bought this as a second copy so I would have one to lend to friends. This film is a masterpiece, and many people find it utterly life changing, and, NO, you don't have to be gay to find it so.
Superbly directed and acted, and with amazing cinematography, it is probably the best film ever made.
It is not to be taken lightly, and a box of tissues is an essential element when viewing.

Wow this film is utterly amazing. Heath Ledger SHONE in this film, his acting was truly brilliant and quite frankly Im shocked he didnt win the oscar. Viewing other films from Jake G, I thought he didnt act well in any of them really, but brokeback mountain showed that he could, I was astounded. People label this film as 'the gay cowboy film'. Its SO much more than this, the storyline makes every viewer think about their lives, and how so little people get the chance to feel true love, whether its with the same gender or not. I was slightly confused on why they chose Anne Hathaway of all people, as this is a serious film, with a serious point, and she tends to do silly american tripe; but she did play the part well. I truly loved this film, the s*x scenes are tasteful, and nothing makes you cringe. Ending is truly amazing. I watched this film after Heath Ledger's death (r.i.p) and this really made me think he was such an amazing actor and if he had lived on, he could have been one of the greatest..I mean look at The Joker! I say this is a film to watch before you die, as it truly is one of the greatest films anyone has ever made.

I decided to buy this DVD because my daughter had raved about the film and we have fairly similar artistic tastes.

Well I wasn't disappointed - it was sympathetically directed, contained magnificent scenery and had two very convincing actors in the main roles. Some of your reviewers said it was slow-moving and boring (men of course)but I felt it just added to the mood and made you realize how many years were passing. Everyone should be made to see it just to reconfirm the dangers of bigotry. I have watched it twice and on both occasions shed several tears at the end.

  NOTHING SPECIAL

I struggled to decide whether to give it 4 stars because the core of the film - the love story between the two cowboys - is so badly done that all that saves it are the scenery, the photography and the music. It is an atmospheric film, beautifully acted too, but the story does not convince me on an emotional level. Ang Lee did not develop the boy's love: one minute they're all manly and the next they're shagging. The next 20 years are also glossed over on the emotional level because it just does not explain the chemistry between the two guys. If it had been a film about a heterosexual couple it would have flopped. Still those landscapes! That music! A very good film if only for them.

When this film was released in the cinema, I was amazed at the degree of hype surrounding it. Despite my interest, I never went to see it. Recently, I purchased the title on DVD. If you haven't seen it, BUY IT! A beautifully produced and directed film about the feelings two people have for each other which are cruelly stifled by general expectations by the small minded populus. A tremendous story set in amazing surroundings. This is not the 'gay cowboy film' many have labelled it. It's a classic love story which just happens to involve two guys rather than the more acceptable guy /girl arrangement.

Like most people, gay cowboys isnt really my first genre choice. I sat down to watch this with my wife with some reluctance. It is actually a good film - very well directed and the scenery was stunning. A story of enduring love.

  An incredibly moving movie.
Review created: 17/09/09

On of my favourites of all time. It doesn't have a lot of action scenes, or even constant talking. It uses a lot of wide natural shots with beautiful acoustic music playing throughout. The talking it does have in it is well chosen words beautifully acted.

All scenes are done tastefully and handled amazingly, bringing this piece together perfectly.

It has made me cry every time I've watched it, I'd recommend everyone trying this movie, it's plain to see why Ang Lee got an award for directing this.

very touching film, about two grown men in sociaty that wouldnt accept their sexuality at that time of age, believing enough you get emotionally attached to their charactors.

a must see movie, not what everyone expects because they've heard rumours of health and jake doing homosexual activites, truth of the matter is, once you start watchin the film, that view is out of the window, very heart warming story that no matter whom will have a lump in their throat after watching this, just becomes two charactors doing what they do and capturing you into their story.

nothing i remember correctly as to it being disappointing in the slightest.

i bought the dvd because my gf loved the film and really wanted to see it again, after sitting down expecting only to hear the rumours i had heard, the thought of them doing things barely even occured to me, i was entranced in their story, and how touching it was, a slight understanding even to people who might still go through the things as they do because sociatly these days still havent came to a full understanding and acceptance of different typical sexualities.

After all the hype wanted to see what all the fuss was about -an excellent and challenging view on homosexuality and heterosexuality and the stereotypical responses to them (by those good old boys).Sex scenes not too grafic and done in a real life kind of way.Nevertheless it is a very sad film but beautifully shot-wonderful locations.
