Blackly, bleakly comedic drama about paramedics in a tough area of New York. Director Martin Scorsese does a brilliant job of creating the atmosphere in the mainly night-time scenes as stressed-out ambulanceman Nicolas Cage heads for a breakdown. But all in all, it's a real downer.

Nicholas Cage was not my most favourite actor and I decided to buy Bringing Out The Dead ona recommendation for a friend.

It is a leisurely stroll through the mind of man who is coming apart at the seams, rendered by guilt.

His job as a paramedic seems to be bringing both the worst and best elements of his character screaming to the surface.

The style of in cheek humour is what made this film so enjoyable.

The characters are varied and some are extremely disturbed as though they have just been dragged from the underbelly of the city.

The overdose ressurection is by far one of the funniest I have seen.

Nicholas Cage's 'sad face' is perfect for this film (the only other seems to custom fit for him in my opinion is Lord Of War).

If you like dark comedy, and sharp dialogue I would recommend this film.

  Scorcese + Nicholas Cage = B.O.T.D.

I decided to buy this because I like all of the Martin Scorcese films I've seen, and enjoyed Nick Cage in 8 mm (I think if you have seen 8mm and like it, you will probably enjoy this).
The film is quite dark, and gruesome in places. There is similar cinematography at work here as there was in Scorcese's Taxi Driver. Infact, there are quite a few parallels to be drawn between the two. There are several lingering shots on cages face as he is driving along, and that coupled with the music, really convey the lead character's changing mental state and deepening alienation. New york city is portrayed as a melting pot of prostitution, drug abuse, insanity and hopelessness. Art imitating life then.
This film is a well worth a look. I have seen this film go regularly for £3 and under with postage, so if you like your films to be atmospheric and slightly edgy, this is worth a look.
