Despite the Narnia-esque title and the poster's boasts that the film comes from "the people who brought you 'The Chronicles of Narnia'", "Bridge to Terabithia" is actually an enchanting coming-of-age story about friendship, family and the power of imagination. Based on an award-winning childrens' novel, the film stars Josh Hutcherson as ten-year-old Jess Aarons, the only boy in a family of five children, who's bullied at school and struggles for his parents' attention at home. When new classmate Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb) moves in next door, their initial rivalry quickly turns to friendship, as Jess discovers a fellow outsider. Together they create a fantasy world called Terabithia, which can only be accessed by swinging across a river on a rope in the woods near their home. As their fantasy world develops, they find the inspiration to tackle all their personal problem.
The script is excellent, wisely keeping the fantasy element in the background and presenting the characters with natural obstacles that everyone can relate to. It also tackles some serious issues such as loss and loneliness, so you may want to have some tissues on hand for the tear-stained finale.
In short, this is a sensitive and ultimately moving coming-of-age drama with a strong script and superb performances.
