Great film - very watchable WWII action!

This is one of those films you've probably seen bits of on several rainy Sunday afternoons, whilst channel flicking! It is actually a very good film with notable appearances from Robert Vaughn and George Segal.

It recreates the actual events surrounding the battle for, and capture of, the bridge of the films title. It is a well made film with lots of action sequences, quite gritty at times, showing the desperate nature of war, and the struggle to capture a key asset for both Germany and the allies. A small force of Germans lead by Robert Vaughn try to desperately hold back the advancing Americans, who are trying to capture the bridge before the defenders can blow it up.

It is one of those war films that doesn't make you think too much, but has enough depth to make you engage with the characters, with good all round acting and dialogue, but the real star of the film is the bridge itself - how does it still manage to stay up?....

Definitely recommended good action flick.

  Gungo-ho, but acceptable
Review created: 09/04/08

Somewhat flowery and over dramatised, but staying acceptably close to the truth of the American capture of the Ludendorf bridge at Remagen at the close of WW2. A film of its era; at least it doesn't portray the US winning the war single-handed, they really did do this one all on their own.

I'm not a huge fan of war movies but this one is one of the better ones. It allows character to develop, isn't unduly maudlin and refrains from the usual flag-waving nonsense. Paramount is Robert Vaughan's performance. he commands the screen whenever he appears. Some great action sequences too.
