Beautiful settings and superb acting
Must confess that I prefer this to the TV series but haven't read the book. Ben Whishaw is very convincing in this as is Emma Thompson whose 'restrained' acting makes for a great deal of the atmosphere. Scenes of Venice are also quite beautiful but Castle Howard naturally takes the starring role. Demonstrates the effect of both the British class system and the impact of Catholic values on a family and the widespread damage that religion invariably causes. But watch it if you simply want to see Ben Whishaw!
