Review: The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas...
Based on the best selling novel by John Boyne. Berlin, 1942 - Eight-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country.
All he knows is that his father was promoted and he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no-one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pajamas.
Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation, as their secret meetings result in a friendship that has startling and devastating consequences.
My Review: The innocence of childhood, When we think back to the way things were as a child, we saw the world and felt about it very differently. The Boy in The striped Pyjamas portrays in an excellent way the incomprehension of two young children towards the changes in the world around them. Despite the Nazi propoganda that tries to win their minds over, they still form an unbreakable bond that displays itself even in the darkest of moments. The film shows how many self respecting people can be led to a hatred of an entire race of people, purely because of the well chosen words of Nazism. It teaches us how dark life is after childhood and that the innocence that is born with us can be poisoned away.
The film's content was by no means graphic, but rather intense and upsetting. It's wonderful to see a film that does not need scenes of violence or sex to make it work.
If your child is not sensitive, they should see this film. It serves as a tribute to what really happened.
The fact that this film was in English does not deter from the message it wants to portray. The use of English is perhaps a good way to encourage more viewers.
I will place this film, although different, in the league of Schindlers List and the Pianist.
