Growing up has nothing to do with age...

Will (Grant) is a 38-year old Londoner living a bachelor lifestyle on the back of royalties earned from a Christmas song penned by his father some years previously. A serial womaniser, Will comes up with the idea of attending a single parents group as a new way to pick up women. Inventing a two-year old son for himself, he meets lonely, bullied schoolboy Marcus (Nicholas Hoult) and his depressed, music therapist mother (Toni Collette). The intelligent Marcus soon learns Will’s secret and so blackmails him into letting him hang out at his place and watch afternoon telly. However, what starts out as an uneasy quiz show watching alliance turns into an unlikely friendship...

A watchable film, but tough subject

About a Boy stars Hugh Grant as an a lonely male who lives of his father royalties from writing one song years ago. He finds a new way of meeting women is at baby groups, so pretends to be a single dad. Through this he gets to know a young boy, whose single mum is a manic depressive.
A good film, but the laughs are few and far between because of the subject matter of the film.

Yet another brilliant film with hugh grant staring in it! as i said in the title you will definately like this film if you like hugh grant as it has his querkiness in it as it does with all his films he stars in. its not all about hugh grant though, as although a chick flick, it has hilarious moments

This is a film of personal opinion, as with many films, but if you love a good chick flick and you love to have a laugh, this is the film for you!

Hugh Grant plays Will, a shallow, rich bachelor without a care in the world and completely self obsessed. His latest ploy to meet women is to go to single parent meetings and pretend to be a single parent. Through this he meets Suzie who is friends with Fiona and her child Marcus. He strikes up an unlikely friendship with the boy, who quickly sees this as a temporary escape from his troubled life plus an opportunity to match make for his suicidal mother but Will is not remotely interested. Marcus is a boy with the weight of the world on his shoulders and a host of problems. Soon Will comes to genuinely care about the boy who forces his way into his life, and this unlikely friendship helps them each overcome their hang ups and problems to become more balanced happy people. Will slowly thaws to become a fully fledged member of the human race, and the transformation is endearing.

  Raving About A Boy
Review created: 24/03/08

Quirky, funny, brilliantly-observed.
Hugh Grant actually acts in this one and his character is superb: a shallow, superficial man whose life is ripped into by a geeky 12-year old and who, despite himself, starts to enjoy the roller-coaster ride that follows. Toni Collette is wonderful as the hippy-ish single mum on the edge, with a young Nicholas Hoult (now of Skins fame) perfect as the geeky child trying to hold his mum's life together.
Some laugh-out-loud moments, especially around Will, and some excellent lines, including Will's wise words to Marcus's mum: "He's not expressing himself, he's expressing you!" which should resonate with many parents.
Marcus's "two's not enough, you need more" (as he tries to build a network of friends for himself and his mum) could become the mantra of small families everywhere.
Despite a harrowing scene early on, this is ultimately a funny and uplifting film, deeper than your average feel-good movie thanks to the great British author and excellent cast - highly recommended!

I bought it because the title had promise. But it was cliched, cutseypie unadulterated mush. I hated it. Not a cliche left unturned. Boy cute, brings them together. Man (hugh Grant) cute as he pretends to be a father. Boys Mother overly cute as she pretends to hate Hugh Grant. AWFUL movie.
It should be given out with sick bags.

I had already seen this film and had to have it. The storyline is about an unusual friendship and although the theme has been done many times before, the characters being so different is what makes it special.

  About a Boy
Review created: 29/07/08

That rare beast, a decent British comedy, thanks largely to a terrific comic performance by Grant, coupled with the surprisingly effective touch of American Pie directors the Weitz brothers.

Sane and Rational filmgoers who agree that Notting Hill was a strong contender for the worst film of the 90s will be pleased to note the absence of the cloying hand of writer Richard Curtis in the adaptation of Nick Hornby’s About A Boy.

Instead the film is written and directed by the Weitz brothers (Paul and Chris), the directors of American Pie. It is also co-produced by Working Title (Four Weddings, Bridget Jones etc) and Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Productions – DeNiro even gets a producer’s credit.

It’s a strange choice on paper, but it pays off and the result is a decent British comedy, boasting a superb performance by Hugh Grant and a terrific soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy to boot.

Grant plays Will Freeman, a shallow, 38 year-old layabout slacker who doesn’t have to work, thanks to the royalties from a Christmas ditty penned by his deceased father. Instead he spends all his time shopping, listening to music, watching TV, getting his hair “carefully dishevelled” (Grant ditches his trademark floppy locks and it pays off) and dating a string of women, none of whom seem to interest him for very long.

However, when Will hits upon the idea of pursuing single mothers (rationalising that they won’t expect commitment), he suddenly finds himself with more than he bargained for when he meets 12 year old ‘weird kid’ Marcus (Nicholas Hoult, sporting a pudding-bowl haircut that ought to be made illegal).

The supporting performances are somewhat mixed – Toni Collette provides solid support as always, but Rachel Weisz is barely in it – despite being billed second she doesn’t even appear for over an hour.

Also, it has to be said that, although Nicholas Hoult certainly looks the part and is good on the voice-over, he isn’t quite good enough to handle some of the more dramatic scenes and often looks like he’s trying too hard. (It was perhaps unwise to include a scene where he wishes he were Haley Joel Osment, because the audience may feel the same way).

Luckily, it’s Grant’s performance that really makes the film. As well as opting for “different” hair, he has also ditched his ‘posh’ stammering accent that, pre-Bridget Jones was in danger of becoming his trademark.

Here, as in Bridget Jones, Grant proves that there’s more to him as a comic actor than a collection of vocal tics and physical gestures and, crucially, he isn’t afraid to appear unsympathetic at times, meaning that he can get away with superbly-timed lines such as this: (After Marcus’ mother has attempted suicide) “It was horrible…but driving fast behind the ambulance was fantastic!”

The script is extremely sharp, although just occasionally there is too much reliance on the voice-over – so much so that it seems like Grant and Hoult are just reading aloud from Hornby’s novel.

Still, there are plenty of good lines and an inspired musical finale that will leave you grinning from ear-to-ear. The film also boasts a superb soundtrack, specially composed by Badly Drawn Boy to complement the film, rather than relying on the usual collection of pop hits.

In short, About A Boy is an enjoyable British comedy with some great lines and a terrific central performance from Hugh Grant. Recommended.

I am not really a Hugh Grant fan, but I really did enjoy this movie. The Story line was good, most of the characters made the story believable; although the character played by toni collette was very weak.
Another likeable film for my collection.....

I love this film! But it does depend on your sense of humour. This is true British comedy at its best in my opinion, it covers some quite serious issues at times but has its fair share of laughs and cringeworthy moments too, with some brilliant added sarcasm!! Its no Monty Python, but I don't think there is anything to dislike about this film. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a lighthearted film, without a tricky plotline, definately good if you don't want to give it your full attention! Hope you enjoy......
