The Bourne Identity (DVD 2003)

Based on a book by Robert Ludlum,
Excellent interpretation of the book, a movie with great production values makes this thriller ‘a one to watch’ for action fans.

Speaking with ‘hindsight’ this is a great start to a three film franchise.


Plot summary:

Some fishermen pull a body of a man from the sea, even though he has two bullet holes in him, he is alive, and unfortunately he cannot remember who he is.

During the removal of the bullets an implant is discovered containing the number of a Swiss bank account.

Once healed the young man goes to Zurich accesses the account and discovers his name is Jason Bourne, also within the deposit box is a large amount of cash and numerous passports with his picture on them.

When confronted, his reflex reaction is to use his awesome martial arts skills, during the journey to discover who he is, other skills become apparent.

This journey will take him to confront directly with the CIA


Nice extras on the DVD, if you want more try the special edition. For those wanting value for money try the boxset with all three films.

I decided to buy the Bourne Identity (2003) film on dvd, as i had seen the film at a friend's house and enjoyed teh film so much. I then went on to watch the next film 'Bourne supremacy' and enjoyed that film just as much. i had seen the Bourne identity in the shops but decided to have a look on ebay and found lots of dvd's at cheaper prices. I like the whole story of Jason Bourne trying to find out his true identity but also going on the run from the people who he worked for. Lots of adventure and fantastic stunt scenes that will keep you glued to your seat. Well worth a view!

Robert Ludlum's labyrinthine thrillers have already attracted the attention of such film makers as John Frankenheimer ("The Holcroft Covenant") and Sam Peckinpah ("The Osterman Weekend"). However, it has taken the hip, quirky sensibility of Doug Liman ("Slackers") to bring his prose into the 21st century.

The result is "The Bourne Identity", a fast-paced, unpredictable and edgy yarn that breathes new life into the espionage thriller genre. Liman's secret weapon is Matt Damon who, despite being ten years younger than Ludlum's Jason Bourne, offers an interesting variation on classic spies like Harry Palmer and George Smiley.

When we first meet Bourne, he is a half-dead amnesiac rescued at sea with no identifying marks beside the bullets in his back and a Swiss bank account number embedded in his hip. Travelling from Marseilles to Zurich to Paris, Jason must work out who he is before the assassins sent by his former employers catch up with him.

It's an ingenious set-up that culminates in a thrilling "Italian Job"-style chase through the streets of Paris in a beaten-up old Mini. Unfortunately there's still an hour to go, and the subsequent diversion into the French countryside conspicuously lacks the energy and pace of what precedes it.

Franka Potente of "Run Lola Run" fame is shamefully wasted as Damon's love interest, and it would have been nice to see more of Clive Owen as one of the ruthless killers on Jason's trail. But this is still a sharply written and slickly edited above average blockbuster affair.

This film will have you on the edge of your seat. I didnt think i would like a film like this, the usual chase film etc.... but i recently went to the cinema to watch the latest one, of course then had to watch the first and second of the films!! absolutly fab, i NEED to buy the trilogy when they come out. Matt Damon at his best.....

Wow! Loved it!
I couldn't wait to see this movie, having seen the action packed adventure in the previous movies; I certainly wan't dissapointed!

The storyline was better than expected, and the action is even better than ever.

Having seen the previous two films, I told myself that the action would be predictable in this movie; in fact quite the opposite is true - the camera angles and fast paced action leave you guessing which corner the Bourne Ultimatum will take next. Nice ending too. Watch it! Buy it!

Haven't seen this for a while so great to look back at how it all fitted together.
Excellent viewing especially if you also watch the Ultimatium and Supremacy after.. but I must say the acting (Matt Damon is soo young in this!)and the special effects scenes get better as you work through the trilogy.

I love this movie. Effects are fabulous. Sometimes it makes you jump out of the sofa! The best thing about the movie is its fast pace. I was amazed to see the speed of the movie and still the director has been able to keep the contunuity on. Its a job welldone! A strong recommendation from me, too!

Bought the Film after reading the book. Hence it is inevitable that comparisons are made. The film is a good thriller, but lacks the suspense, and simplicity of the book - too many modern gadgets. Also the film is short on "episodes".

Wow. What can I say? This film is the start of an amazing franchise, and one of the best films EVER. From the beginning, you are intrigued, questions flood your mind but slowly it resolves itself... The chasing is tense and exciting... with lots of fast paced action, not to forget a love scene. Every film needs a love scene. :)

Matt Damon plays the lead role of Jason Bourne, but is accompanied by famous German actress Franka Potente and American Julia Stiles, all of which contribute greatly to making this film so good. THis is a MUST watch.

What the first one doesnt solve, the second and third will do- and those are worth buying and watching as well.

Not quite up to the standard of the Robert Ludlum books, but this is probably the best of the three films. Excellent value at this price...

I love the bourne movies, they are amazing. I think it is genious characters and storyline. Matt Damon is brillient in this movie. I recently bought the new bourne game and it is so good, i felt it neccessery to buy the movies.

I have seen this film over and over and still love it. From the first time I watched it I was struck by the pace of the film and the superb musical score that compliments it throughout. The car chase through Paris is breathtaking. The dialogue is sparing and realistic with the odd bit of sarcastic humour. The plot is revealed in tanatalisingly small pieces but not so slowly that boredom sets in. You have to be prepared to be swept along with the plot though and not think too hard about it as it progresses! The DVD is great. There are not many films in which the bonus features interest me but in this case I enjoyed them. Seeing the alternative ending was interesting and I could see why the 'deleted' scenes were deleted.

i lost this film and re kindled my love for it when i got ultimatum for my birth day.

buy them all you will not regret it.

I enjoyed seeing the film at the cinema and wanted a copy for my collection to go along with the Bourne Identity. A great film, excellent acting and really good director in charge makes for a superb evenings entertainment. The DVD received was an original which makes all the difference in viewing.

Superb film if you like action-all-the way films.Very james bondish but one for all the family.If you rent or borrow this from a friend, you'll want to buy the box set.Its well worth it!Matt Damon has found his mark and could quite happily go on doing his stuff for years to come as Jason Bourne.Bring it on !

If you like action with a great plot then this is for you. Unlike other hollywood blockbusters this is a film with a point and a proper story line. Great action and stunts all the way and leaves you wanting more - although the sequel is better!!

A man awakens without memory on a small fishing boat near France. He finds himself pursued by mysterious assassins and still not knowing who he is or why he's being chased.

The plot is quite simple but consistent. The focus is entirely on Jason Bourne and how he is to deal with having no memory of his past and being hunted without knowing why.

Next to Ronin, this is one of the best spy movies that out there. If you want something a bit different from the typical James Bond formula this movie might do it for you.

first of 3 films (at time of writing Aug 07)and gripping right from the start. lots of nail-biting tense stuff, punchy punchy stuff and a great car chase (in a Mini-a real one, that is, in Paris). Bit of romantic stuff too in case your partner is that way inclined. However, don't buy this DVD from coolstuff direct cos they'll hammer you on postage and never reply to emails or phone calls.
