Album Notes The Boo Radleys includes: Martin Carr (guitar).Recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales in January and February, 1996.A consistently imaginative album and one that reveals at least one clever hook or twist in every track. Returning to the spirit of Giant Steps after their recent chart forays, a screeching wall-of-guitar noise dominates the title track, which leads into increasingly strange subject matter ("Meltin's Worm") and fresh musical ideas throughout. The dub feel of "Fortunate Son" recalls the mighty "Lazarus," and the Simon And Garfunkel-style harmonies of "New Brighton Promenade" emphasize the Boos' stunning ability to write crafted, melodic pop songs. Overall a highly uncommercial album, it nevertheless restored the band's reputation as inspired pop experimenters.
Editorial Reviews 5 (out of 5) - ...Guitarist/songwriter Martin Carr is as prolific as any ambient artist, but he writes songs, not soundscapes, that dig into your soul rather than soothe it... Alternative Press (05/01/1997)
...Nearly every song Carr has written breaks multiple rules of songwriting....The results are almost always messy and disjointed, but they're often thrilling as well....forgoing the friendliness of the Boo's last album...in favor of a denser, harder, more demanding sound... Musician (05/01/1997)
...the Boo Radleys embody a post-RUBBER SOUL take. Prone to melodically fragmented, lyrically obtuse onslaughts, this foursome have been woefully underrecognized. - Rating: A- Entertainment Weekly (04/18/1997)
