Album Notes
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer (vocals).Additional personnel include: Aston "Familyman" Barrett (bass guitar); Carlton Barrett (drums).Recording information: 1970 - 1971.At the dawn of the 1970s, the Wailers were beginning to synthesize their ska and American R&B influences with a deeper rocksteady vibe that would crystallize on their 1973 Island Records debut, CATCH A FIRE. A slower groove prevailed, and the harmonies of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer were attaining a sweet, ragged perfection. SOUL REVOLUTION PART II captures the Wailers in this pivotal transition, and the songs contained herein are early examples of what the entire world would soon recognize as reggae.Released only in Jamaica at the time, SOUL REVOLUTION PART II features original versions of songs that would become staples of Marley's repertoire (both with the Wailers and as a solo artist). These include the gentle sway of "Duppy Conqueror," a reggae version of Curtis Mayfield's "Keep on Moving," and the seductive escapist anthem "Kaya." The Wailers are backed here by the Upsetters (the session kings of Jamaica at the time, and the group from whom Marley would recruit the famous Barrett Brothers rhythm section). In addition to its superb playing and deep groove, the set proves Marley a top-notch songwriter and peerless vocalist, even at this stage. This is a cornerstone of early reggae.
