Album Notes Producers include: Lee "Scratch" Perry.Recorded between 1968 and 1972. Includes liner notes by Nigel Molden. The association between The Wailers and Lee "Scratch" Perry, which lasted from 1967 until 1972, produced some of the finest and, oddly, least-known work in the Marley canon. A confluence of black American R&B ("I Made A Mistake" could have been released on Stax circa 1965), '50s pop confections (the Wailers back-up vocals turn doo-wop on its ear), and pulsing, ska-inflected island polyrhythms, the band's sound forged an accessible and utterly unique brand of music.Perry's band, The Upsetters, lends tight, incendiary support, and the studio wizard himself takes the controls, filtering everything through bright, textured atmospheres. To have this team backing Marley is almost too good to be true. There is a kind of wound-up rock & roll energy here that was refined in Marley's later reggae sound, and a few tracks, such as "Try Me" and "Soul Almighty," are perfect examples of what soul music can be. While audiophiles should be warned that the fidelity of this collection is far from perfect (there are pitch fluctuations and volume changes), those unfamiliar with this material are in for a treat.
