If you like Dylan you will like this. Some of it is very early but good just the same. Its good to hear familiar songs with a different slant. I AM a Dylan fan so my opinion is biased anyway but it is worth a listen to even for the uninitiated!

This is a great compilation from one of rock music`s great icons.28 titles over 2 CD`s of which only 2 have been previously released - Song To Woody & a live take of Like A Rolling Stone, previously on Live - 1966. The set begins with what is probably Dylan`s first known recording(When I Got Troubles) from 1959 and ends with the aforementioned Like A Rolling Stone. The first 7 titles on CD one are really for completists only, including 3 home demos. The real quality begins with a delightful demo version of Don`t Think Twice,It`s Alright and continues through the remainder of CD one and all of CD two. The highlights - a lovely live version of Blowin` In The Wind(April 1963) / A Hard Rain`s A Gonna Fall, live from Carnegie Hall,1963(Dylan explains that the song does not neccessarily refer to the Cuban missile crisis) / the first complete take of Mr.Tambourine Man,with Rambling Jack Elliott on "harmony" vocals from June 1964 / a sublime alternate take of It`s All Over Now Baby Blue from Jan.1965 / a drumless take of She Belongs To Me,also from Jan.1965 / a live at Newport version of Maggie`s Farm, again from 1965 / a slightly up tempo version of It Takes A Lot To Laugh...again from 1965 / an alternate take of Just Like Tom Thumb`s Blues from Aug.1965 / a totally bluesy version of Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat from Jan.1966 and the live Like A Rolling Stone complete with the "Judas" shout. In truth it`s difficult to find fault with the set.
The accompanying booklet includes a track by track review by Eddie Gorodetsky;some great reminiscings from Al Kooper and session details for each title.

The sun's not yellow, it's chicken.....

A companion double CD to the Scorcese dvd set, this is an essential item for the Dylan fan, freak or devotee. despite the fact that almost everyone will possess every track already.

This is a marvellous 28 track compilation, of which 26 are (officially) unreleased, though, as stated, the frenetic Dylan bootleg market has been at work since the late 60s. However, the sound quality and physical presentation of the set are simply superlative.

Of major interest (at least to your reviewer) are the working versions of 1965/66 material to be fond on Disc 2, including "Tombstone Blues" and "Highway 61 Revisited" - the vocal sneer and wordplay complete, if not (quite) the musical backing. Guitarslinger Mike Bloomfield could sure play though....

The set ends with the (in)famous "Judas" version of "...Rolling Stone", recorded live in my home town of Manchester, England, in May 1966. Though released several years ago on the '66 Live Set, this is still a monumental recording, which stands the test of time. "I don't believe you..... you're a liar..."

My son has the Christian name Dylan. Spot any reference......???
