The implicit message of its five new songs, like that of the non-marketing campaign for the album, seems to be: enough already, let's get back to the music. The title song, a colder re-write of the Jackson classic "Billie Jean," draws you in, but Jackson quickly gets to the heart of the album with two astonishing songs that address his public image. "Ghosts" has an icy, metallic beat, while "Is It Scary" has the dramatic flair of a big pop ballad, but they feature nearly identical opening verses about ghosts and ghouls behind the walls and under the bed. In the former song, the ghouls are the paparazzi snapping pictures of Jackson's baby, and he asks of them, "Who gave you the right...Are you the ghost of jealousy?" In the next song, the ghosts turn out to be the many public faces of Michael Jackson, and he turns the image around, suggesting that ghoulishness is in the eye of the beholder: "If you wanna see eccentricalities/I'll be grotesque before your eyes...Is that scary for you, baby?"It's a declaration of self-confidence, and Jackson follows with feisty remixes of songs from HISTORY, including a version of "2 Bad" peppered with a sample of "Beat It," and a Madonna-like disco mix of "Stranger In Moscow." Reviews Review created: 23/03/07 by: This album was released soon after the HIStory album. A total of 8 tracks were taken from HIStory and remixed, only the remaining 5 were new. Whilst this is a bit unusual for an artist the remixed tracks are very different to the originals so at least that's something. As for the new tracks, well they are absolutely astounding. Stranger in Moscow is another great track on this album that deserves a mention. In the video it appears that Michael is walking through the streets of Moscow in the rain, when in actual fact he is walking on a treadmill in a studio. Very clever use of special effects there. He has been quoted in the past as having said he wrote this song whilst in Moscow and feeling very alone despite being surrounded by people. Very poignant indeed. Or how about Earth Song? Who can forget the masterpiece video that accompanied that track. Out of all the artists in the world no-one can doubt that Michael comes up with the best videos to accompany his songs out of everyone in the music business. Each one is carefully put together until it reaches his almost impossibly high standards. Truly the King of music videos. This album has gone on to become the biggest selling remix album of all time, and it's not hard to see why. However, due to its remixing of tracks from the previous HIStory album (some of which were done, well, badly) I have rated this as Good. If all the tracks were up to the standard of the title track and Ghosts, I would have given it an Excellent rating. If you like remixes, this might be for you. But it's worth buying for the title track alone, even if you don't like remixes. Review ID: 10000000003232476 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 07/09/06 by: This is one album that every Michael Jackson fan must own. It has some of the rarer tracks on it, with a few more well known songs that have been remixed fabulously. The songs are great to dance to and give you an upbeat attitude, to cheer you up. I do feel that it's not Michael Jackson's usual chart topping successes, however if you're a fan, you'll love it!!! Definately worth purchasing. Review ID: 10000000001784036 Was this review helpful?
