Remember the good old days when CGI could have meant cold green ice-cream? Remember when Dr Who sent you hiding behind the seatee? Thta's when Blakes 7 was made (who needs flash computer tricks?)

I bought this as I am a sci fi nut and enjoy all forms of the art. It might be a bit corny and look as if its made in a back shed, but it's still a classic

Anyone got the other series for sale?

I remember vividly watching Blake’s seven on its’ original run back in 1978 from the second episode onwards. Without realising what is was all about it grew on me greatly in those days. Up to the time when we virtually only had the ZX spectrum computer, the writer’s fantasy of a super computer ‘ORAC’ is pretty much what the Internet is today.

Consider; Predictions from several decades ago that failed to foresee that computers would become much smaller and cheaper were immediately regarded as ‘far fetched’. That these changes would enable nearly every business and home to have its own computer to be used for a variety of applications, and that those machines would be linked together (not unlike Orac), in a world-wide network, were never even considered. Instead, futurist scenarios frequently presented a world of very few, very expensive all-powerful computers the size of large buildings, used only for divining answers to complex problems beyond the ability of man to solve on his own! Yet most (if not all), of Terry Nations visions have become frightenly real today.

I thought the series was as good as, if not better than Star trek; it thrilled me more with certain episodes, and the corrupt federation concept and hard way of life portrayed in the series is not far removed from tough elements of society today. If you look beyond the surface of the set, special effects and production you really can feel some brilliant plots, philosophies, ideals, truths and disturbing analogies that are wholly related to life- the reality of pain and suffering, the paradox of life and death, the sad fact that good does not always triumph over evil, no matter how much it is deserved for whatever reasons.

The kind of fears and fights for empire building that is all around us today wound up in a fantasy satire. Trust, betrayal, reward, power, leadership, specialisation, culture, creed, prejudice, vengeance, technology, capitalism, and even a primitive existence are all portrayed and rolled into one in Blake’s seven. It is absolutely fascinating; you need intelligence to appreciate the scripts and what they mean. Terry nation created a masterpiece in my opinion.

While you’re watching it, give it a chance; just imagine if it were real- it’s not far off really! God help us.

Being an old fella of 40, i watched the original series, so it is a mixture of nostalgia, combined with ignoring the OLD special effects, but still watchable

Being a fan from when the shows first aired on BBC all those years ago. ( not giving any age away), I have to say that I am not disapointed about these DVD's. This box set is a must for any fan. The picture quality is excellent, and it is fun to see the extra's on a DVD of their own. Learning how to make the teleport braclet all over again was wonderful and fun. The standing jokes about the poor sets and a must to see. This is a must for all sci-fi fans.

Not sure why i originally decided to purchase this box set ,ithink it was while at a friends we got on to old sci fi programmes/films and Blakes 7 came up .
I'm glad i did being around 9 years old when i first and last saw blakes 7 i couldnt grasp some of the sublte undertones and power strugle between Blake and Avon ,also didnt notice the sets wobbling around either !!
The story revolves around a group of escaped prisoners who where being shipped off world to a prison planet amongst which Rog Blake sits, an ex Rebel has been stripped of his identity and arrested on false charges.
the prison transport encounters a non terran spcae craft and the guards try to salvage the craft but after 2 go missing the prisoners are sent on the ship to investigate .
Survivng this the prisoners Blake,Avon,Jenna take control of the alien ship and set of to rescue the other inmates .
Once he has his crew Blake sets off to exact his revenge against the power that stole his life and killed his family .

well worth watching if you like scifi on a darker note .
lets hope season 2 is as good

  Cheesy, yet gripping

Blake's 7 is often sneered at, with some justification, for its cheap and shoddy production values. It is true that the effects are poor, the sets wobbly, (especially the Liberater's flight controls), and the clothing plumbs the depths of 70s naffness. But then, the budget was miniscule, so what can you expect?
Concentrate instead on the characterisation; the morally dubious Blake, bullying his crew into following him; the calculating Avon, more concerned with wealth and survival; the cowardly Villa; the barking mad Travis, and of course the sensual, power-crazed Servalan.
It is these characters that lift Blake's 7 from its lowly budgetry problems; the crew of 'heroic' rebels bicker and whinge amongst themselves, Servalan plots their downfall, Travis kills anyone who spills his pint... It's all a far cry from the pristine banality of Star Trek, or the paper-thin characters of Star Wars, and it is this unusual take on the standard 'rebels against the fascists' plot that makes Blake's 7 stand out.
The plots, of course, can be ropey, with plot holes large enough to teleport through and contrivances that would make any jaded hack pause in their scribbling, but overall series one pulls itself up from these problems to be thoughtful, dark, and a welcome addition to the science ficton canon.
It's certainly not perfect, but Blake's 7 does at least try to be different, which is more than you can say for most other shows.
