  Blade Runer's last cut
Review created: 29/04/08

This 'Final Cut' edition of Blade Runner should be the very last release to be re-edited. I have lost count how many times this film has been changed over the years. From Cinema release in 1982 through to DVD format, viewers have been able to see releases with and without narration, new and/or extended scenes, a changed end and various aspect ratios. With this FINAL CUT edition, Director Ridley Scott has now released, perhaps the most satisfying and visually glorious version. For those that have not seen Blade Runner, the FINAL CUT edition is THE copy own. Now digitally restored and remastered with new special effects and remastered soundtrack, this release looks and sounds amazing. There is no denying Blade Runner has had a difficult and controversial legacy. For serious Blade Runner fans this new version makes for interesting viewing. New and old Blade Runner fans alike should also find disc two fascinating with its in depth documentary, which should address all those questions we have been wanting a definitive answer to. If I state them here it will spoil the story for those that have not seen this film. For me, Blade Runner is a masterpiece. With its bleak vision of the future it becomes more apparent with each viewing that the world featured in this film is the one most likely to happen. Don't get me wrong. It's not all doom and loom. The bond between Rachel and Rick is one of the great love stories and without Vangelis' soundtrack, which touches the soul, Blade Runner would be a far lesser work. It's taken 26 years to perfect this film, only now can I finally feel satisfied with the end result.

Excellent film made even better. Compared to 'directors cut', the high resolution remastering has definately improved the picture, but plotwise, there are a few odd fill-in scenes but nothing profoundly new.

  Good stuff!
Review created: 02/04/08

It's been a long time since I've seen the Directors Cut so I can't fairly criticise the difference between or purpose of the final cut. So given that, all I can do is review this as an individual movie: a perfect dystopian vision, shot with nothing other than confidence, grace and conviction.

Blade Runner is set in the (now) near future in a densely populated LA, doused in a middle eastern climate where billboards fly over head on corporate zeppelins.

Earth has colonized other planets, where androids named Replicants are created for labour and entertainment. Some of the Replicants begin slaughtering humans (perhaps because they are developing human emotions) and are made illegal on earth by punishment of death.

Rick Deckard is brought out of retirement as a Blade Runner (an agent who hunts and 'retires' Replicants) to track down Replicants who have returned to LA to figure out a way to expand their 4 year life span. The lines between humanity and technology slowly blur and identities are at steak as Deckard chases his bounty.

There's still life in the matte paintings and miniatures (I may be biased though as I feel physical craft often beats any degree of cgi) and even the production design looks oddly fresh, partly due to most of our generations inability to evolve creatively and avoid regurgitating the 80's at any given opportunity.

The movie is very dream-like, using broad synth patches and almost surreal imagery to paint a heavily stylized picture of a world far too big for its LA Gear Lights! This is a fantastic tone for such fantastic (literally) subject matter. It flows at a steady pace and scenes segue into one another with an astonishing climax that keeps you thinking and thinking and thinking.

The original movie was the consequence of a director losing creative control, let's hope this decades equivalent (Southland Tales) can regain it's original vision with such integrity.

  BLADE RUNNER-SCOTTS CLASSIC SCIENCE FICTION/FACT?
Review created: 29/02/08

RIDLEY SCOTT'S MULTI-VERSION, 5 VERSIONS OF (WHAT IS NOW REGARDED)AS A SCREEN CLASSIC, SCOTT HAS HAD A UPHILL BATTLE TO MAKE AND FINISH HIS VERSION-WHICH HAS CONTINUED OFF AND ON FOR 25+ YEARS.
ITS ALSO ONE OF HARRISON FORDS KEY ROLES OF THE EIGHTIES ( ALONG WITH "ART HOUSE" ROLES SUCH AS INDIANA JONES & HAN SOLO.
BLADE RUNNER (IN THE ORIGINAL "INTERNATIONAL VERSION")PREMIERED ON BRITISH VIDEO-FOR THOSE UNDER 35 ,THIS WAS A FILM ON MAGNETIC TAPE, AND A MASSIVE CULT FOLLOWING DEVELOPED-WITH RUMOURS OF MANY DIFFRENT VERSIONS AND A VERY UNHAPPY DIRECTOR-SCOTT.
1992- A UNOFFICIAL VWERSION OF SCOTTS MOVIE APPEARED-MINUS VOICE OVER (A PART OF THE MOVIE DISPISED BY BOTH SCOTT AND FORD BOTH...)SCOTT HAS FINALLY FINISHED THIS MOVIE-STUNNING BOTH VISUALLY-SHOT BY THE LATE & GREAT JORDAN CRONENWETH AND POPULATED BY CHARACTER ACTORS-EDWARD JAMES OLMOS-SOON TO BECOME FAMOUS IN HIS OWN RIGHT IN "MIAMI VICE", SEAN YOUNG,DARYL HANNAH, AND THE SPLENDID RUTGER HAUER-IN THE ROLE OF "AMERICAN" CAREER,HIS ROY BATTY IS A TRULY THREE DIMENSIONAL NEMESIS FOR FORD'S RICK DECKARD TO FACE.
EVERY ASPECT OF THE FUTUREIS COVERED IN THIS MOVIE-AND ITS NOT PRETTY- I FIRST SAW THE MOVIE IN 1984 AND AS THE YEARS HAVE GONE BY, THE MOVIE HAS BECOME ONE OF ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS-THE GLOBALISATION OF BIG BUSINESS, ACUTE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DIVISION-AND URBAN DECAY!
SCOTT'S FUTURE IS ALL TO NEAR (2019)

Blade Runner Final Cut HD DVD

The definitive non Sci-Fi, Sci-Fi film.
I say this as its is so accurately and subtlety realised visions of our future that you don't even feel like you are watching a futuristic film.
The ideas that gave Ridley Scott the inspiration for his unique vision of Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep are so true to life it is almost as if he had a crystal ball.
The story may be a little sparse but the very nuances of the character portrayal weave a complex tale about the very meaning of human existence highlighting that we are merely an interpretation of our previous experiences and what that could mean in the creation of a clone or robot with memories.
The film its self is a masterclass in vision, creation, lighting, and acting. These are arguably the finest moments of every member of the team. Possibly it was the love or maybe even frustration of the long, hard and budget restricted filming created the right ambience to spur the crew and actors. What ever it was it worked and this Final Cut of a film fraught with studio interference highlights this fact.
The new team worked with the original crew and director as well as some of the original actors to correct and update alot of the effects and stunts so that the full and true picture could be realised.
The quality is excellent the effects astounding and sound is a pure absorbing delight. The soundtrack is as beautiful as ever and the sound effects are so subtle you hardly realise they are there.
Everything is captured in a very high 4k process so you get perfect resolution that could scale beyond the 1080p offered here.
I cant recommend this enough everything is here. The breathtaking vista to the emotional speeches all as Ridley Scott truly desired.
For the purist out there there is also all the original versions such as the cinema releases and also the new seen workprint version. Some of these include the voice over from Harrison Ford, the "happy" ending and some exclude things like the unicorn daydream. Which ever version you like you are treated to the same high quality transfer of picture and sound.
I had to own this as I have always loved Blade Runner in which ever form but I must same that the Final is my favourite. It includes some of my favourite moments but more importantly it has removed the bits I don't like such as the voice over and also "happy" ending. I felt that simply because we are human we can understand the plight that the replicants suffer and that we didn't need explaining to us something that is portrayed so well through the simplest of terms ie body language and actual acting.
I have watched this at least ten times now and ever time I do I feel I have discovered a little more.
The Final question one may ask is "Is Deckard a replicant?". I think who can say for sure?
I always like to think that he isn't and that he simply discovers the true meaning to life through his encounters with those that cling so dearly to it.

This is the third dvd of the film, and they've actually got it right.
Voices are in sync and the picture quality is brill. Extra cgi scenes
make it even better. I don't usually bother with extras disk but i
did with this and really pleased i did, even if Ford does hate it.
If you get the chance get a hold of Vangelis' Blade Runner Trilogy
3 CD set. New music specially written for 25th anniversary is classic
Vangelis. Don't miss it if you're a Blade Runner fan.

At long last, Ridley Scott's classic gets the DVD release it deserves. The film is one of the most visually overwhelming films I have ever seen. A flop on it's original release in 1982, the film is now acknowledged as one of the most influential films of all time. Picture quality is stunning. The DVD features a very detailed and honest documentary on the making of the film with interviews with Harrison Ford, Ridley Scott and most of the cast. A shame there is no interview with Vangelis though whose music adds so much to the film.
