Director Ridley Scott's haunting vision of the not-too-distant future stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a retired police assassin, or "blade runner" on the hunt of four androids.

The movie is set in LA (2019) and it is a dark, polluted, overcrowded and dangerous place to be. Deckard's story is well told and his hourney has you on the edge of your seat.

Blade Runner was a groundbreaking movie and much of the sci-fi we see now has it's origins and inspiration from Ridley Scott's futuristic adventure.

Despite the plethora of reviews of this brilliant movie I’ve decided to add mine as this is one of my favourite films. “Bladerunner” is one of those films that seems to have passed from being a mere film into something of a cultural icon. Under appreciated on its original release, it is now rightly considered to be a seminal work, hugely influential, not only one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, but one of the greatest films of all time.
I had the pleasure of seeing “Bladerunner” in the cinema on its original release and the outstanding visual impact of the film (Its miniature cityscapes still blow away any C.G.I. Of a similar nature) and its central themes of love and essentially what it is to be human were something I had never seen so poetically approached in cinema before. When the directors cut was released without the unnecessary voice-over and the tacked on happy ending (All originally inserted by a panicking studio) the film was improved. Prior to this it was a very ,very good film. Now it was a masterpiece.
Like all great sci-fi “Blade runner “says more about humanity than any number of romantic comedies and psychological thrillers. The replicants attempts to avert their shortened life-span is a very human reaction and Rachel’s gradual realisation of her replicant origins and the lie of her implanted family history is akin to someone being told they are adopted and have terminal cancer at the same time. These beings like us, indeed like any life form just want to live free of fear and supplication, as free sentient beings. Their struggle is one that resonates through human history but the story’s central premise that we have created a slave race to lord it over is chilling and horribly plausible.
The much debated unicorn dream of Deckard’s is interesting but is irrelevant to the movies narrative, after all no one in the film wants to die wether they are human or replicant.Though it is worth noting that if he is indeed a replicant it gives him a synchronicity with Rachel that could explain why they are drawn so irresistibly to each other.
I’ve watched this film more time than I’ve watched any other and it never fails to impress and fascinate. The acting is uniformly terrific and the casting is spot on, particularly Rutger Hauer as Roy who imbibes the part with a steely moral determination but in the sublime death scene endows him with a dignity and humanity beyond any other character in the film. The ending is now suitably ambiguous, leaving the lovers fate in the air and a further tantalising clue to Deckard’s origins. The Vangelis soundtrack is superb, it could have been a soulless clunking nightmare but like the film it looks beyond the sum of the machine to peer into the heart of the sentient being within and adds another layer of emotional resonance.
The films final message that all of us hold memories that are unique to us and that all life is precious is of universal relevance and resonates loudly down the years as the world continues to crackle with the tragedy of continuing conflict. A must see movie, a stunning DVD.Unmissable.

I have been seeking this film for a long time now, i couldn't find it anywhere in shops to buy or at places like play.com. I heard that blade runner had been taken off the shelves, O.O.P (out of production). I was desperate to see this movie. I was lucky enough to find a second hand near mint condition on e-bay version of the film from when it was first released on dvd in 1999, one of the first ever dvd discs. I bought it straight away.
It was the directors cut that was released on dvd. Ridley scott's version of the film that was more true to the original vision he intended on, that was not possible with the technology in 1983 when the film was made. A couple of storyline line plots and the ending are different to the original release aswell as new and extended scenes. A lot of controversy occurred upon the cinema release in 1992 of the new directors cut with hardcore fans of the original saying its vastly inferior. I however hav'nt seen the original but The directors cut of blade runner is very entertaining with the special effects polished up nicely, the new ending leaving more up to the viewer to conclude and a very exciting new subplot concerning Dekards(Ford)living existence that is certain to spout debate with any fan of the movie.
If you're wondering if androids really do dream of electric sheep, then i recommend you buy a second hand copy of this classic sci-fi movie that cant be bought in shops, from e-bay.

  futuristic, stylish masterpiece

This futuristic, stylish masterpiece directed by Ridley Scott is an absolute classic. Visually stunning, and atmospheric, it is simply breathtaking. Deckard (Harrison Ford) attempts to catch escaped replicant humans from off world colonies who are seeking answers to their design flaws. Rutger Hauer is never better as the charismatic Roy, a replicant, who exhibits both savage cruelty and compassionate humanity. Sean Young is great as Rachel, the replicant Deckard falls in love with, and who leaves him with a dilemma. Vangelis provides the stunning soundtrack to the film. Highly recommended. A must see film.

  Blade Runner Directors Cut1999

Atmospheric, moody and magnificent. The Directors Cut does not have the Harrison Ford "talk over" explanation of the original cinema release nor the childish "feel good" bolt on ending. This allows the viewer to be treated to Vangelis' soundtrack in digital surround sound whilst absorbing Ridley Scott's stunning but menacing visualisation of the future. A dark yet uplifting tale about life set in a future where some of our worst eco fears are a reality.

If you have never seen this try experiencing this film in the dark with the sound issuing from your best available system and your favorite relaxant in your hand. If you are a fan of Ridley's films ( Alien, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator) then this will not disappoint.

For a film 25 years old this year, it remains for me my all time favorite and I can never yet watch it without being moved.

My son's favourite film and soundtrack of all time.

I bought the DVD because it was my son's favourite film of all time and also his favourite sound track. My son died last year and I only had a copy of the movie on video, a very bad recording from channel 5 years ago. I also like the soundtrack, but I put the film on for my son. I don't think I have ever watched it all the way through. My sister is coming to watch it with me next week. My son was only 29 when he died, but he always knew what he liked. This is a classic science fiction movie, with some venerable stars, and the soundtrack by VanGelis is brilliant. My son bought me the soundtrack about 3 times as he kept on borrowing it to lend to other people and never got it back. I am so glad I was able to buy this film at such a reasonable price on Ebay. The DVD is in excellent condition and the case has its original insert.

  Blade runner - Director's cut

Good quality product all round in that the dvd format seems the best format; with a truly great cast of headliners in a highly credible action movie which keeps the plot together in every facet, showing the cast to best advantage under direction from one who thoroughly understands his craft - no false notes are struck by any of the cast and all deserve the highest praise. Whatever anyone's views as to the merits of the sci-fi genre, fiction is rapidly in the process of turning into fact according to best information currently available, particularly in the field of robotics, as expressed in the latest scientific journals and reported by highly-respected media outlets.

  New version to be released

(5/5 for the film, for the quality of this DVD release 3/5)
A remastered and full wide-screen version of Blade Runner is to be released by Warner Bros to coincide with the film's 25th Anniversary. Apparently there will be a limited edition release of the Directors Cut version in Sept 2006 then, sometime next year, a multi-disc set with a number of different cuts of the film on it. Both of these will be of vastly greater quality than the current DVD release which was one of the first by Warner.

Having tried to purchase the blade runner dvd for a friends birthday, I had no success in retail outlets. I decided to search on e-bay, I succeeded on my second bid and received the dvd very that week. The whole process was very easy, the price was good, the payment made using paypal and the speed at which the dvd was received.

I would use e-bay as a preference in the future.

Fantastic DVD, Ridley Scott at his best!!
Review created: 03/11/09

I'd seen this film years ago and it struck a chord with me then... the dark feel to a very beautiful, if off-key, future world. And the replicant beings being used for work that humans deemed unworthy of themselves.

Rutger Hauer's line... "all these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain..." And my feelings of an individuals right to live, regardless of how they were created.

Food for thought eh?!

  Blade runner review
Review created: 16/03/09

I decided to purchase Blade Runner as it is one of the origional futuristic sci fi classics to really make an impact and i knew it had a cult following and great actors including Harrison Ford, and Rutger Heuer who is the outstanding performer in this movie.
The first thing you notice from the start of the film is the grand scale of the world the director is showing you which is an oriental sky scraper filled neon lighted city of the furure. Blade Runner is a job which requires assassins to terminate genetically engineered humans when needed this is the job of Harrison Ford and the main plot of the story is that he gets a contract to terminate certain genetically made humans which are trying to survive and even elongate there short 4 year life span.
For the sheer scale of this world they made you would expect a story of apocalyptic proportions but instead you get a small story inside this amazing and interesting futuristic world and thats why i think this film has such a huge following my only disappointment is the pace of this movie which slows down a little to much for my liking but apart from that it is a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting film thanks for reading my review.

Scott cheers

  Blade Runner High Definition! HD
Review created: 21/02/08(updated 21/02/08)

I've been a Blade Runner fan for many years now, but the HD DVD has taken things to a whole new level. If you are lucky enough to have an HD telly AND an HD DVD player, then this version will (almost literally if you have it turned up) blow your socks off.

The colours and vistas are even more astonishing, especially when the spinner comes into land. You can almost touch things; they leap off the screen and beckon you to join them. Check out those city scapes. Superb.

Save up. Sell every other thing you own and get HD / Blue Ray. See the difference!

The film is okay, although I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read the book it was inspired from first.
The book (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Phillip K. Dick) is much better than the film.
