The Blackadder series, begun in the 1980s, was a comedic masterpiece set forth by Rowan Atkinson and his comrades. From start to finish, the first series was a masterstroke of wit, irony and comedic styling that fits both the contemporary and medieval situations perfectly.
The first series was set in the pre-Tudor royal family, projecting that Richard III won at Bosworth Field, and Richard IV succeeded him, until after many adventures, the entire royal family was done in, and Henry Tudor reworte history thereafter. The first series starred Brian Blessed and Elspet Gray as the King and Queen, and Robert East as their eldest son, the Prince of Wales. Rowan Atkinson played the second son, who with companions Percy and Baldrick (Tim McInnerny and Tony Robinson) create most of the comic scenes. BlackAdder variously becomes the Archbishop of Canterbury, the betrothed of the Spanish Infanta, a witch on trial, and finally, however briefly, King of England. There were six episodes of this series (as would be true for each of succeeding regular series years) - they included many attempts by Blackadder to take power, including the crown itself - something that would repeat in various manner over the subsequent years save the last. Both Tim McInnerny and Tony Robinson will recur as characters in later years; Baldrick is the only consistent major character besides Blackadder - in the first year, however, he is rather more clever than his future generations; indeed, in this first series, Baldrick is probably the most intelligent of the lot (a scary thing indeed!)

The second series sees Percy and Baldrick following a descendent of Blackadder in Elizabethan times; as befits the period, the characters are more vibrant and saucy, particularly Blackadder, who still seeks his fortune as one of the Queen's suitors. Here he variously becomes the royal executioner, a sea-faring discoverer, a bankrupt noble, and finally a traitor to the crown, albeit not without a sense of humour. Miranda Richardson puts in a spectacular performance as Queen Elizabeth, with Stephen Fry and Patsy Byrne in attendance. Stephen Fry will recur throughout the series.

In the third series, Blackadder is still close to the crown, as the butler of the Prince Regent, a despised position to a despised person. Baldrick is still around, and the Prince is played by Hugh Laurie, who will recur in the final series. Done almost as a period comedy, the very titles and situations pay hommage to the day of the Scarlet Pimpernel, Dr. Johnson's dictionary, and the conflict with France. Through an interesting set of circumstances, butler and prince trade places, and the Blackadder finally obtains his intended goal, albeit in the name of someone else.

In the fourth and final series, Blackadder has fallen from a great height, and is an officer in the trenches of World War I. Baldrick is still there, and Percy and the Prince have transformed into fellow field officers, with Stephen Fry playing a bellicose general here as he did Wellington in the third series. The main device of this series is the effort by Blackadder to escape the trenches, by variously becoming an artist, a theatre producer, a chef, but to no avail finally, producing a sombre end to the dynasty.

There are also various pieces of trivia, guides, and a Richard Curtis interview included among the discs.

Having watched a re-run of Blackadder goes forth on Sky, I realised what a humour classic this was. I had not watched the original Blackadder, so I decided to purchase the set, and watch the lot. I did my research on the price, and as always decided to compare internet prices with ebay.

Invariably the ebay price came out best, so I purchased the set using Paypal, whilst sat in my own home, my sort of shopping! The set proved to be a fantastic acquisition, and a very funny and well written series. I have to say, in my opinion, improving with the arrival of Ben Elton's writting skills and humour.

All in all a collection that I would highly recommend, to all.

I had a cunning plan after losing the videoed versions of the series to get them off Ebay.
The recordings seem sharper both visually and humourously. The joy of having at hand an escape from dire programming cannot be stressed enough.
The complete series allows you the chance to sneer at the lacklustre dome episode and to cringe as Darling sups his Baldrick Cappuccino.
The whole set gives the opportunity to make like some demented time lord and to flit between whichever era suits your mood.
It's remarkable that such a repulsive individual as Edmund can cause you so much pain as he stands by the bottom rung of the ladder in series 4. Watching S.Baldrick morph into a more vomit inducing soul is remarkable. The settings of all 6 discs reminds you that some of the finest comedy originates in the U.K.
Watch with pride, with laughter, and most importantly a cast iron stomach.

Great to see all the series of Blackadder. I got this new and sealed at a very good price, but must admit I am dissapointed with the quality. The video quality is ok, no remastering, but the sound quality is not the best. Still because it's so well acted, scripted, and is so funny, it's still highly enjoyable.

One of the best comedy series ever to emerge from England, Black Adder traces the deeply cynical and self-serving lineage of various Edmund Blackadders from the muck of the Middle Ages to the frontline of World War I. In his pre-Mr Bean triumph, British comic actor Rowan Atkinson played all five versions of Edmund, beginning with the villainous and cowardly Duke of Edinburgh, whose scheming mind and awful haircut seem to stand him in good stead to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury -- a deadly occupation if ever there was one. Among tales of royal dethronings, Black Death, witch-smellers (who root out spell-makers with their noses), and ghosts, Edmund is a perennial survivor who never quite gets ahead in multiple episodes. Jump to the Elizabethan era and Atkinson picks up the saga as Lord Edmund, who is perpetually courting favour from mad Queen Bess (Miranda Richardson) and is always walking a tightrope from which he can either gain the world or lose his head. Subjected to bizarre services for her majesty (at one point, Edmund is asked to do for potatoes what Sir Walter Raleigh did for tobacco), Edmund -- like his ancestor -- can never quite fulfill his larger ambitions. The next incarnation we encounter is in late-18th-century Regency England. This time, Blackadder is a mere butler to the idiotic Prince Regent (Hugh Laurie in a brilliantly buffoonish performance) and is caught in various misadventures with Samuel Johnson, Shakespearean actors, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and William Pitt the younger. With a brief stop in Victorian London for a Christmas special, the series concludes with several episodes set during the Great War. The new Edmund is a career army officer, but a scoundrel all the same. Shirking his duties whenever possible and taking advantage of any opportunity for undeserved reward, this final, deeply sour, and very funny Blackadder negotiates survival among a cadre of fools and dimwits. No small mention can be made of Atkinson's supporting cast, easily among the finest comic performers of their generation: besides Laurie and Richardson, Stephen Fry, Tony Robinson, and Tim McInnerny. --Tom Keogh

DVD Description

Starring Rowan Atkinson as the anti-hero, Edmund Blackadder, and Tony Robinson as his sidekick/dogsbody, Baldrick. Each series is set in a different time era, all follow the fortunes, or rather misfortunes, of Edmund Blackadder. With great quotes such as "I Have a Cunning Plan!" this is a series defiantly worth watching, with the last (Blackadder Goes Forth) becoming more serious and less comical, showing the 2 great sides to the show.

I LOOOOOVE these DVDS! So funny i would recommend to every comedy fan! All the greatest episodes from Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder), Stephen Fry (Melchett), Tony Robinson (Baldrick) and Hugh Lawrie (George) and many more. Blackadder created a milestone in British comedy history and will remain in the loins of all good British actors for years to come. In my opinion they're an inspirational to all good actors no matter where they live and perform.

The whole series of Blackadder was and shall always be an absolute classic.
I could not believe how my two young sons, 16 and 13, could enjoy the series so much, the way I did at their age.
This in turn led me to be determined to purchase the complete dvd set.
We have all had hours and hours of side splitting laughter watching over again from the very first episode to the very last, including both TV specials.
Brilliant DVD Boxset which should be in every home through out the land.

Probably the best sitcom in the World...

To paraphrase the UK TV advert "Carlsberg don't make situation comedies...but if they did, it would probably be the best sitcom in the World!"

Blackadder falls right into that category - beloved in Britain for it's ready wit, excellent satire and its characterisations, each series manages to capture the historical situations perfectly and extract every ounce of humour from them. There has probably never been a finer collection of comedic writing than this one, and the boxed set is nicely rounded off with 3 one off specials that were made for various occasions - Blackadder's Cavalier Years, Blackadder's Christmas Carol and Blackadder Back and Forth.

The only disappointment with this collection is the rather sparse special features, consisting of one half hour documentary. Still, with comedy like this, you won't be worried about the extras anyway.

Having laughed for many years at the t.v. series when aired, i had always promised myself the complete series when available.
Like most things,it has had to be put on the back burner for several years, but boy oh boy am i glad i finally purchased.!
From series one, where the characters begin to develop, through to the 4th,(which in my opinion is the best.!)the humour and sarcastic wit,is non-stop and extremely funny.
It may not appeal to all,.but to many, this has been one of the funniest comedy series of all time.
Enjoy,...you can purchase in confidence.!

I remember being addicted to these at the time, so decided to get the collection to see if they still had the same affect, and they did. Found myself quoting the lines (evidence of mis-spent college days) and appreciating how clever they really are. These cannot fail to make you laugh. Every one is a classic.

BLACKADDER, BRITAINS FINEST (apart from #1 that is!)
Review created: 05/10/09

cham3980 ( 6 )

Love this, always have since first viewed on the BBC. I say always but that`s not quite true. The first series never really hit the heights of 2,3 and 4 but it still had it`s moments. None more so than Miriam Margolies as the Spannish infanta and Jim Broadbent as her escort and their attempting to win the hand of Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) in wedded matrimony! Broadbent`s Spannish accent was both crazy and a delight! For the most though the series was rambling and over played (Brian Blessed especially). A clever and educated Baldrick (Tony Robinson) did not compare favourably to the "villiage idiot" type Baldrick we came to know and love in the later shows. Enough said.
Things took off in the 2nd series. Blackadder was both dashing and villainous. His sharp wit and selfish motives being centre to the plot. The characters besides Blackadder were superb. His sidekicks, the stupid Percy (Tim McInerny) and the now crusty and witless Baldrick were perfect as they were constantly downtrodden by Blackadder. Baldrick`s "I have a cunning plan!" became the shows major catchphrase. At the palace there was "Queenie" (Miranda Richardson), Queen Elizabeth the First. Always hovering over the choice "shall i marry Blackadder? or have him beheaded?" The nervousness of Blackadder in the presence of Queenie always brilliantly played by Rowan Atkinson....never knowing what frame of mind Queenie was in from one moment to the next. Stephen Fry was great as the the snivelling Lord Melchet by Queenie`s side.
Two performances to look out for though are Tom Baker as Captain Rum and in a later episode, Rik Mayall in his first outing as Lord Flashart (BRILLIANT!).
Series 3 sees Blackadder as butler/servent to the Prince Regent (Hugh Laurie). Baldrick has sunk to an even lower class of idiot but is still coming up with those "cunning plans!" This is another wonderfull series capped by Stephen Fry`s performance as the Iron Duke of Wellington in the final episode. His "assault" (both verbal and physical) on Hugh Laurie (the Prince Regent disguised as his own butler, Blackadder) being one of best comedy moments of all time!
Ofcourse though, series 4 ("goes forth") is the pinnacle. FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT, HILLARIOUS and ultimately poignant and sad. The final scene as the brave tommies "go over the top" to their slaughter one of the best in Brittish television (not just comedy). The characters in the trenches of the first world war are delightfully played. Blackadder again looking after number one, Baldrick being Baldrick, Lieutennant George (Hugh Laurie) innocently chomping at the bit to fight for "King and country" and Tim McInerny as Captain Darling (what a superb name and what a simple but brilliant joke) penpushing for Major Cecil Hogmanay Melchet (Stephen Fry again, his finest role ever in television). Again, even in a brilliant series like this one moments still stand out. Another appearance by Rik Mayall, this time as the number one pilot Flashart of the flying corps, Baldrick`s war poems (Boom, boom, boom!),Blackadder attempting to prove his insanity with pencils up his nose and a pair of underpants on his head, "Speckled Jim" and ofcourse, that final scene.
Add to all of this "Blackadders Christmas Carol" (a very clever twist to an old favourite story) and the "goes back and forth" episode, celebrating the turn of the Millenium and you have the (almost, very nearly) perfect collection of the greatest comedy moments written by Ben Elton and Richard Curtis.
