English comedy at its best

The Blackadder series focuses hilariously on selected periods in British history. Blackadder Goes Forth (4th in the series) is set in the trenches during the First World War. Writers Ben Elton and Richard Curtis show their obvious love of history and excellent comic talents. I must admit I didn't like the first series too much, Atkinsons character hadn't firmly developed then. By the fourth series however, he shone in every department, making good use of the sheer quality of one liners and historical name dropping. Abusing Baldric (Tony Robinson) verbally and sometimes physically! And George (Hugh Laurie) buffoons his way happily throughout. George: 'Sir, what should we do if we step on a mine?' Blackadder: 'Well, usual procedure leutenant is to jump 50 feet into the air and scatter yourself over a wide area'. It's up there with the best, on a par with Fawlty Towers and possibly The Young Ones as my personal faves. I'd say Baldric and Manuel have to be the most laughed at characters in the history of British comedy. Timeless ? now rent it!
