Black Books is a comedy set in a messy bookshop run by a messy drunk called Bernard who hates customers.
It's a must for anyone who works, or has worked, in retail: Bernard's attitude towards customers is amazingly bad and he says or does whatever he likes. His assistant Manny is very patient with his boss but ends up tidying up the mess (which there usually is). Next-door-best-friend Fran supplies the red wine, cigarettes and female banter.
The three make this comedy funny because the things that happen are quite possibly real situations (although I pity anyone having to cope with anyone like Bernard). The setting is usually the bookshop but that doesn't seem to matter! They always get stuck in some bad situation but manage to scrape their way out.
There are some gems but I will point out Grapes Of Wrath in Series One, where Bernard and Manny get drunk on crazily expensive wine and Bill Bailey puts his hair up in pigtails.....enjoy!

  Dylan Moran on top form

After watching 1 episode of this on paramount i imediaetly fell in love with this show.
It is about a failing alcoholic miserable book shop owner (Dylan Moran - shaun of the dead) who decides to get a little extra help in the shop (Bill Bailey - never mind the buzzcocks) and what comes along the road is nothing short of comedy genius.
Featuring dry witty humour this is one of the funniest t.v series i have ever seen and Dylan Moran's performance and comedy is nothing short of marvelous.
I have not given this 5 stars because there are still things i like more but i would definetly give it 4.5 with out a question of a doubt. I do not have a bad thing to say about this dvd.

I picked this up for £7.09 and it is an absolute bargain.
You can get it on Ebay for around £14 (buy now option) but i highly recommend you get it online from HMV. It cost £10 and at least your guranteed to get it, especially if you go in store(checked online 01-03-09)

By the way, this is my 1st dvd review and am a terrible typer and i can't be bothered to go back and check the spelling's. I hope this help's.

If sarcasm annoy's you then do not buy this.

  Gloriously silly

Off-the-wall, unrealistic and marvellously silly. The bad-tempered and wicked Bernard Black is a snarling, cynical foil to the good-hearted Manny and daft Fran in their various adventures in bookselling. Very silly indeed, but sharp-witted and smart. Hugely enjoyable.

  Off- the-wall vintage comedy

Having gone to see Dylan Moran at the Buxton Opera House, I recalled dimly the fact that he had a TV series some years ago with the lovely Bill Bailey. My daughter found samples on Youtube and really enjoyed it, so we went ahead and bought the boxed set. We love it! It's ditzy, off-the-wall, mad and zany and has held up really well. If you liked Northern Exposure and enjoy the Mighty Boosh, this one is for you!

Very amusing series. Series 1 is by far the best, later series are weaker. However, the overall comic genius of grumpy beggar Bernard remains throughout.

  Seriously funny show!!!

I loved this show when it was on TV, and took to streaming it on the net. I could easily watch all three series back to back several times in a row and not get bored.
If youre into slightly deranged characters, and very silly humour then youll love this. The acting is fab considering that theres no way id be able to say my lines without laughing half the time, and there are some familiar faces popping up as guest stars in several of the episode.
Its quite simple one of my favourite shows ever, but you do need to be able to deal with crazy people to find it funny i think.
So if Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey, and Tamsin Greig sound like a good team to you (which they are :p) then i would definitely recommend buying this complete set :):):).
