This memorable tale of man versus birds stars Tippi Hedren as Melanie, a snooty San Francisco socialite who meets a dapper lawyer/weekend farmer (Rod Taylor). He disapproves of her jetset lifestyle; she dislikes him, too...or maybe not. She drives up the coast to his hometown to surprise him and is inexplicably attacked by seagulls. Soon, the whole town is besieged by murderous birds. Several people, including schoolteacher Suzanne Pleshette, are killed.
The reason for the attacks is never given; we are left to wonder: Was it because Melanie bought caged lovebirds in the opening scene? Are the birds getting back at mankind for past wrongs? We'll never know, but this is a very scary film (especially considering there is no musical soundtrack - only the menacing flapping of bird wings). Hedren is a classic ice-princess; Taylor is the earthy Everyman; they have a good chemistry between them. The rural setting makes an interesting backdrop for unexpected thrills. You'll be on the edge of your seat, waiting for the next attack of The Birds!

One of Hitchcocks most effective scare fests: a small seaside community is attacked, for reasons unknown, by bloodthirsty rooks and seagulls. Great special effects for its time. But the most original feature of the film is that it has no music - just the sound (sometimes electronically treated) of wings flapping and birds cawing and crowing. Great stuff!

I always enjoy watching this film. Hitchcock had a certain style which nobody can match. This film is very easy to watch and understand and very entertaining for anybody who has not yet seen it. A recommended buy!

  The Birds (DVD 2003)

I always watch this film whenever it comes on TV and never tire of seeing it. Therefore, i decided to buy it when i found it on DVD. Now i can watch it even if it is not advertised on TV. I like it because it is still quite a suspensefull film though dated a bit, some of the actions seem a bit stunted nowadays and make it a bit more comedic than it was at the time of making. Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy, Susanne Pleshette and Veronica Cartwright are all great. Also on DVD you can scan the film and find the real birds from the cardboard and stuffed ones (funny). I don't think theres anything i dsilike about it.

  A Classic!
Review created: 02/01/08

A classic film that everyone should own! They don't make films like this anymore - it's all gore and violence now, this film is scary, hope the birds don't see it and get ideas!
