Album Notes
Alice Cooper: Vincent "Alice Cooper" Furnier (vocals); Michael Bruce (guitar, keyboards); Glen Buxton (guitar); Dennis Dunaway (bass); Neal Smith (drums).Alice Cooper scored their first global #1 hit with this album, but it would be the last "classic" release by the original line-up (who would split one year later). The band sheds the raw garage-rock of earlier albums in favor of a glossier production, but grit and sleaze can still be detected at the music's core. With their highly theatrical stage show (which featured Cooper getting his head chopped off by a guillotine), Alice Cooper became a household name, but the material on BILLION DOLLAR BABIES was so exceptional that there was no danger of the music being overshadowed by gimmicks. While mission statement "No More Mr. Nice Guy" is the best-known song, the rest of the album is just as strong. The title track features a backing vocal by Donovan and a mammoth backbeat from drummer Neal Smith, while sweet melodicism plays an important role in "Generation Landslide" and "Mary Ann." But Cooper's trademark disturbing music and lyrics can still be detected on such self-explanatory titles like "Sick Things" and "I Love the Dead," all these elements working together to make this one of the best, most popular hard rock releases of the early '70s.

I had already owned 'Schools Out', in LP and CD form, for about 30 years before I bit the bullet and bid on Billion Dollar Babies. I now wonder why I waited so long, as I have done nothing but enjoy this CD since it dropped thru the letterbox. A lot of the tracks were out in the early seventies as singles and B sides, so maybe thats why, but having heard this again (and again) has made me re-evaluate Alice Cooper.

Maybe the quality of the band's music and production has gotten overlooked in the theatrical extravaganza that is an Alice Cooper show, but as somebody notable said, Alice Cooper have their own specific sound, and lyrics which can be cynical, ironic or humourous. Its inventive and varied, using latin rhythms on the end of 'raped and freezing' to emphasise a bad-taste Chihuahua adventure, lifting unashamedly from James Bond movies on 'unfinished sweet' (with additional dental sound effects), which is not something the unwary would anticipate, but gives it an extra dimension. The band may well be one of the most underrated ever. Really. 'Hello Hurray' is a superb anthem, and 'Elected' is a brilliant song, as is 'Generation Landslide' with its slightly off key creepy guitar intro. The only thing that grates is the apparent desire to overwork the 'shock' elements a little too much, as with songs such as 'I love the dead'. That and the predictable 'Mary Ann' are possibly the down points of the album, and leave this CD with a slight feeling that it has tailed off at the end, but despite this I would have to rate this purchase as excellent. And produced by Bob Ezrin. Say no more.

Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies (expanded 2CDs)

The original of this was a cracking album, but now you get that album (remastered to boot!) AND a second CD filled with the 'live' tour tracks and a few extras which are quite rare (some not even on the 'Life & Crimes' box-set). The 'live' material is taken from the soundtrack of the newly-available DVD 'Good To See You Again, Alice Cooper' and are superb quality.

So sell your single CD version on eBay, and replace it with this double - you won't regret it!
