love thy neighbour

At first sight this story of a man with three wives looks as though it might be just another soap opera, or maybe some kind of Mills & Boon story with a twist. And there is always the odd inadequate chap who hasn't bothered to watch it properly, and who jumps to the conclusion that it's an excuse to fantasise about having more than one woman.
However what the show does do is bring out both hilarious and ghastly problems which pertain to this kind of lifestyle - it gets you rooting for characters who are bravely coping in a place where you'd never go yourself. Ultimately, the most hideous problem is not the feminine jealousy, the need for viagra, the massive expense, or the political power struggles in this Mormon sect. It's the fear and prejudice among the ordinary neighbours - people like us, living an ordinary lifestyle.
And against this, we are just occasionally given a glimpse of a possible spiritual side to this odd kind of family life - shown through the traditional music of the people of Utah. The American Constitution guarantees freedom from persecution to people of all religions. Maybe this is what this series is ultimately about: love thy neighbour.
