  Big Blue version longue
Review created: 08/02/07

This movie is the most fantastic contemplation of earth paradise in existence.

First it's imperative that we notice one major difference: the short version and the "version longue" are two completely different films. From tip to toe. I only knew this film previously in its short version. Yesterday I bought the "version longue" in my local FNAC store without subtitles (it's rare these days).

And.................... I fell in love with everything about it, stunned and mesmerized, being at the same time riddled by the way that the short version lost all sense, in comparison with the "longue" version. You can think of an integral version like a way to stuff a film with pictures, but in this movie we have the feeling that the movie was intended to have 164 minutes, and not nearly two.

And you can picture the transformation that occurred in my perception of this film, as I passed from that mutilated, full-screen, mono-sound version to a full, widescreen and hi-fi version. This is why "Le Grand Bleu" passed from just a movie by Luc Besson to the greatest movie of my greatest director.

My perception is that this is the great underwater epic he always wanted to make. And he achieves it in every way, specially letting the audience identify themselves with it.

Perhaps my favorite Besson movie was "The Fifth Element" (I like them all), but after having the privilege of experiencing this fantastic, beautiful, stunning, vivid and moving film, "The Big Blue" passed from one of the medium levels to definitely the top one. The characters all gained strength, the underwater scenes all made sense, the previous movie was completely backed up, and the feeling that this movie was a contemplative journey gained finally its place.

I gave it a 10 out of 10, not for the US version (how can they even think of erasing Eric Serra's score?!?!?) which, for its mutilations, deserved a 1, but for the version longue, which is the only way the movie shall be seen. What a masterpiece! After I saw this movie, I rewinded it thinking that my only wish is that one day I get to take part on such an experience, being there, dreaming and sharing my dream with everyone who would like to share it with me. Perhaps one day, a beautiful blue day...

I was expecting a DVD in good condition. It arrived in good condition, but without the box !!! Just the DVD itself, and it was advertised with the picture of the box ! Is that a joke ??? I have to admit, I don't really apreciate this sort of humour.

Saw it on a big screen in the cinema when it came out around 1986. The blue Mediteranian totally blew me away as did the story itself, especially the scenes with Enzo (Jean Reno) and his little brother, and the japanese free divers team.
Got the DVD as a birthday present for my niece who wants to be a dolphin trainer when she grows older, and this movie is a good way to get some inspiration.

This film is visually stunning, it is a "must see" for anyone who loves diving, whether free diving or scuba. The acting is not top notch and perhaps something is lost in translation from French, but the underwater scenes are spellbinding. I last saw this about 8 years ago and I enjoyed it more the second time around.

Not everyone will understand the psyche of the main characters and why they choose to do what they do (can't give the story away) - but those who love being underwater will be mesmerised and stunned by the talent of the main characters and by their passion for their sport.

This was a fantastic film about freedivers. All actors were great and Jean Reno was outstanding. He is such a talented actor. The scenery is fantastic and the sea shots with the dolphins were amazing. Would highly recomend this film.

The Big Blue (long version) 2003
Review created: 02/08/08

Im sure not everybodies cup of tea,but i thiught it a very enjoyable film, have seen the shorter version and the longer version is by far the better, watch out for some hilarious scenes with Reno driving the smallest car on earth, there are as with most besson movies some over the top scenes but they all add to the strange and somewhat disturbing world of the films main character, whom judging by the girlfriends phwoaaaar!! looks great in a pair of speedos.

  Nice non violent film
Review created: 14/05/08

An icon film from the 80's. Set on a Mediterranean background, 2 freeediving friends from childhood with very opposite personalities meet again at international diving contests. That said, the film works equaly in 3 fields. Music-Image-Story line. It seldom happens on a movie that this 3 fields merge together so well as they do in The Big Blue and create such a a moment of sweet 'scapism', if you like.
It is not a film aimed at people interested or knowledgeable in the world of diving at all, but a piece for cinema lovers with remarkably stunning scenery and music. With a few steamy but within taste sex scenes I highly recomend this film.

I had never even heard of the film, till I read about it while reading Jacques Moyal's book 'Homo Delphinus'. Im a fan of Luc Bessons films too. Its not made clear but the film is based on the life of Jacques Moyal, a real life free-diver. I have read a number of reviews by film critics and review magazines before I purchased the film and watched it. All of witch gave the film pretty bad reviews, calling it such things as long and drawn out, slack story line, and strange dreamy underwater scenes. Which admittedly what it is if you enjoy to watch your typical 'America saves the day' films that seem to be in abundance by popular demand. Plus there are apparently two different versions, that have different endings. One of which is acused of being the downfall of the film as it was cut and edited for the American audiance, and was not liked. The film is very long, but better for it. Infact id go as far to say it wasnt long enough. If you like diving, the ocean, and dolphins, then you will like this film, simple as that.

I liked that it was in excellent condition and having watched it I am happy with the quality and the film itself.
I bought it because a friend was looking for it and does not have access to ebay.
There was nothing about it I disliked

  The Big Blue (DVD)
Review created: 09/07/07

I first came across director Luc Besson when I saw his film Nakita on the TV,that was an exellent film much better than the american tv series la femme nakita, based on the film or the limp hollywood remake the assassin, after buying that film on dvd I loaned it to a friend who also loved it and he loaned me another film directed by besson he had called leon after watching that I went and brought every other film I could find by the same director, you can look them all up on imdb.com a very good site if you don't already know about it. THE BIG BLUE was the last piece in the jigsaw a bit different to his other films but none of them are the same anyway apart from some of the actors, but this film THE BIG BLUE was well worth the wait.If you like an original storyline this film has it,if you appreciate good actors rosanna arquette, jean reno and jean-marc barr are all excellent even the dolphins can act, add to that some romance, some great comedy moments, great scenery and locations complimented by the haunting soundtrack,if that was not enough already the great direction and a totally unexpected ending make this film a joy to watch and as I'am sure you must have realised by now I loved it. THE BIG BLUE will not give you the blues. oh and speaking of colours,if my bigging up of THE BIG BLUE leads you to rent, loan or purchase the said masterpiece don't panic at the beginning of the film thinking your dvd player has gone wrong, only the first few minutes are in black & white it gets a lot more colourful after that,OH and it's quite long but you don't realise that while your watching it...

THE END.

The Big Blue - Copy - yet a classic worth having!!
Review created: 05/03/07

I've been searching hi and low for this film and was so excited when I finally won the bid for £15!!.....it was a quick transfer and in a matter of days I finally had it. Was a bit disappointed to find it was US compatiable copy...but soon had it playing through the PC and it was fine. The quality was great and really enjoyed the film....just as good as I had remembered!!
This is a film that you would watch over and over the ending is a bit weak but it makes up for it with the dive scenes, which are brillant and really suck you into the film.
