Album Notes THE JEEP IS JUMPING is also available as part of the BLACK LION PRESENTS BEN WEBSTER boxed set on Black Lion (7607).Personnel: Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Arnved Meyer (trumpet); John Darville (trombone); Niels Jorgen Steen (piano); Henrik Hartmann, Hugo Rasmussen (bass); Hans Nymand (drums).Recorded at Metronome Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark on September 13, 15 and 21, 1965. Includes liner notes by Albert McCarthy.Webster cut four CD's for Black Lion Records in 1965. Probably the best of the four, THE JEEP IS JUMPING documents Webster's career just after he moved to Europe (Copenhagen). Webster is joined here by two other horn players, Arnved Meyer (trumpet) and John Darville (trombone). The result is somewhat reminiscent of Duke Ellington's small combo sessions from the 1930s. Blowing on a plethora of tunes by The Duke, Webster captures the essence of the man who many consider to be the greatest jazz composer of all time. Webster would probably agree with such an assertion, for he plays songs such as "Blue Light," "Duke's In Bed," and "The Jeep Is Jumping" with unerring gusto. But more importantly, we hear Webster's deep understanding of these seminal compositions in his phrasing, tone, and overall confidence level. In other words, he is more than just inspired: he is guided by the music of Ellington. This isn't too hard to believe, given the fact that Webster did perform with Ellington for a short time and always made it his business to record songs from the Ellington catalog whenever he could.
