Belly appeared around the early 90s and they are a band of there time .
Stablemates of This Mortal Coil on 4ad they fit into in that format i like there slightly wierd sound but lots didn't.
I was talked into watching REM around the time this cd came out and Belly supported them they were without doubt the best band that played that day.
Yhe only song i knew on this cd before i bought it was Slow Dog and its a great
track but since listening to it all i will attempt to buy some more.

Belly's debut album as something of a mixed bag , sure there is the usual mix of sombre balladry and indie power pop but there is somewhat of a disconnect throughout a vast part of the album .

Lead off single "Gepetto" is somewhat average when compared to other material on the album and in fairness has dated badly . For me Tanya Donnelly's songwriting and delivery is far better on second album KING ( also check out my review here ) "Dusted" is an incredibly gritty tune and in a lot of respect my tip for stand out track on the album .

"Someone to die for " sounds strained and tormented , which i am sure is the intention , but this does not stack up 15 years on where is to a degree sounds nauseating.

This is far from the most upbeat collection of tunes with the exception of "Feed the Tree" ...also a single , but in fairness having dug this out after many years it sounds tired and dated.

Given a choice I would seek out KING as this is a far better and more rounded effort ..

  A thing of beauty

From the moment Tanya Donelly starts to sing you will fall in love with belly. She has a disturbingly soft and haunting voice and she uses it that way right from her first breath on "someone to die for" and exquisitly soft opening to an album that knows when to throw it's heavyweight punches. There are the awsome heavy guitar songs that Miss Donelly learned to perfection during her time in the Throwing muses. "feed the tree" and "Gepetto" wil leave you grinning from ear to ear and tapping your feet in melodic swayage. And to finish as it started with "stay" Soft, but by no means understated in the slightest. My personal favorite though is "White Belly", a slow lumbering guitar heavy epic that draws you in holds you tight and moves itself slowly all over you in the best tantric turn on the ears have ever had.

Everyone should listen to this record. Even if it is only once. I insist.
