This film has some of the best flight sequences I have ever seen. The cinematography is superb, and one gets a glimpse into the speed a pilot experiences as he tries to outmaneuver an oncoming missile; it also shows the "nuts and bolts" of the ejection seat process, which I found fascinating.
Having fairly low expectations for this film, I was amazed at how entertaining and visually stunning it actually is, and am surprised it did not receive greater success in its theatrical release.
It takes place in Bosnia during an imaginary time, with US forces under NATO command, and though fiction, it uses captions at the end, telling the audience what happened to the characters, as if it were a true story.
Filmed on the USS Carl Vinson, and in Slovakia, with the beauty of the Carpathian mountains as a backdrop for the horror of a war zone, director John Moore keeps the pace of this film constantly pumping. Though some characters are somewhat cartoonish, and the script at times silly, much of the acting is good. Gene Hackman can always be depended upon for a solid performance, and Owen Wilson does well as the main protagonist, who starts out as being a rather shallow, whiny fellow, and grows with his extreme experience, as he plays a cat and mouse chase with a Serbian "tracker", played by Russian actor Vladimir Maskov. Gabriel Macht is excellent in the smaller part of the fighter pilot Stackhouse.

Yes, there are times the plot is contrived and not altogether believable, but this is more than made up for by the dazzling cinematography by Brandan Galvin, a fine score by Don Davis, and astounding visual and sound effects…and if you like jets and choppers the way I do, you are guaranteed to like this film.

couldn't imagine owen wilson being serious.he did a good job-although not what i would call his best work.much of the same could be said of gene hackmen.but i did enjoy it as a movie needing not to much thought.just something to wind down with.a few of my mates who also watched it agreed with this assessment.

  Underated war movie!! Excellent.

It,s not the sort of film you would expect Owen Wilson to star in but he was pretty good in it.The use of the Serbia/Bosnia crisis is well documneted.I can,t think any many recent films using the Balkans as a setting but it just adds to this film. The dreary, bleak and depressing locations make it seem as though the character really is in a fight for his life.Behind enemy lines in a violent situtation keeps you drawn to the film.Great footage of the F/18 hornets and a great war film,Totally recomend.

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes. lol

A hugely enjoyable piece of popcorn-fuelled action cinema, this never reaches the profound moral depths to which it aspires but more than satisfies in terms of its slick visuals, breathless pace and a truly excellent central performance from Owen Wilson. Released from any real obligation to turn on his usual comedy schtick, Wilson brings a whole heap of charm and sincerity to a role that really requires no more than the ability to run around and shoot at people.

It was badly marked on the playing surface but played OK, hence the cheap price I guess. Good ebayers though and good comms. The film is great. It's the usual American Gung-ho stuff but based on a true story. Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson, 2 fine actors, carry it all off well and I particularly liked the alternative ending that cinema goers would have been deprived of.
