Before Night Falls (DVD 2002)

This is a difficult film to watch dealing as it does with the persecution of minority groups (particularly homosexuals) during the Cuban revolution. Javier Bardem is excellent in the lead role and Johhny Depp turns up in two roles as a disconcertingly believable transvestite and a vicious army officer. The end is poignant and the poetry is delightful. A good watch, if traumatic, although Bardem's strong Cuban accent can be hard to follow at times.

Shows the life of a author up to when he dies. Starts in Cuba and is political based. The storyline tends to drag on-could be a lot shorter than 127 minutes. Appearances of Kylies ex Olivier Martinez,Sean Penn and Johnny Depp must appeared for all of five minutes. You really have to be interested in this type of film to watch or recomend to anyone else.

A suprising and very interesting piece of film. Not a film that you want to watch again and again but it is a film that will be watched many times down the line. I had no idea what it was about and who the main character was but you learn more and more as the film progresses and have a deep understanding of the character being portrayed. A film that you have to watch go the end to get a clear understanding. But for some it can be considered slow and tedious, for me it was a journey into someones life and their thoughts. For those who you love carnage and bloodshed at every second then this is NOT for you. But for those who enjoy films such as (excuse all the Johnny depp films, but he does make an appearance as two characters in this film, both very, very different. Plus, Depp is why I had heard of this film)Deadman, The Libertine, Man who Cried (to a degree), and other films that represent the more artistic pieces of film (in contrast of films that just want to create gore for no more than a sadistic kick, e.g. Saw, Hostel, Untracable, Predator etc, not that theese bad films). Anyway, this is a film for those you enjoy a more laid back, but a very intense piece of very pure acting with the removal of stunts, CGI and other very expensive film add-ons. If you haven't got a grip other what pure acting is all about then walk away from this, but if not then this should be a good one.

Rather grim but very interesting. The main actor is also main actor in No Country For Old Men. Equally riveting.
