I've always loved the Beach Boys 'Greatest Hits' so had to buy their own 'Sgt. Pepper'
I was a little worried because only a couple of the tracks are 'hits' but I shouldn't have worried.
Truthfully, the album isn't upbeat but looks at what it's like to be a young person and the stuff that goes through your head. The fact that I'm far from being a young man but the album takes me right back to when I was and feels accurate tells you that the lyrics have some depth.
Of course, there are hits: 'Wouldn't it be Nice', 'God only Knows' and 'Sloop John B', but they actually make more sense surrounded by the other tracks.
Harmonies and ground-breaking production are all in place and the 'other' tracks are fantastic - I'd highlight 'Caroline No', 'You Still Believe in Me', 'Here Today' and the fantastic 'I guess I Just wasn't made for these Times'
This album is, IMHO, better than Sgt. Pepper and an absolute must for Beach Boys fans and anyone with the slightest interest in popular music.
I bought the most basic release but there are a couple of versions of this CD including a 4 CD boxed set of outtakes which I'm saving up for but the simple message is this BUY IT!
