I've always loved the Beach Boys 'Greatest Hits' so had to buy their own 'Sgt. Pepper'

I was a little worried because only a couple of the tracks are 'hits' but I shouldn't have worried.

Truthfully, the album isn't upbeat but looks at what it's like to be a young person and the stuff that goes through your head. The fact that I'm far from being a young man but the album takes me right back to when I was and feels accurate tells you that the lyrics have some depth.

Of course, there are hits: 'Wouldn't it be Nice', 'God only Knows' and 'Sloop John B', but they actually make more sense surrounded by the other tracks.

Harmonies and ground-breaking production are all in place and the 'other' tracks are fantastic - I'd highlight 'Caroline No', 'You Still Believe in Me', 'Here Today' and the fantastic 'I guess I Just wasn't made for these Times'

This album is, IMHO, better than Sgt. Pepper and an absolute must for Beach Boys fans and anyone with the slightest interest in popular music.

I bought the most basic release but there are a couple of versions of this CD including a 4 CD boxed set of outtakes which I'm saving up for but the simple message is this BUY IT!

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (CD 1990)

"God Only Knows" is my favourite song of all times. I was a teenager in the sixties and loved the Beach Boys music, however I never owned any of their records (money was tight)Radio Luxemburg was ALL, so I decided to treat myself to this CD. What a joy. I had not heard some of the tracks, so it was like rediscovering the Beach Boys all over again. What talented people the Wilson brothers were, in their lyrics and vocals, its been great listening to such fab music.

Love it or hate it, it's certainly has 'something.'

Widely regarded as the best album ever and also to a lesser extent the most over rated. Personally, I found it to be a bit of a curio. The more you listen the more you get drawn in to it's quirky world.

Best album ever? As Bruce Springsteen said of music - pure emotion - best has got a very personal edge to it. Unlike most, I don't totally love or hate it. I find it intriguing, but it doesn't hit me with joy when I listen.

It's not my favourite album, but given time and repeated listens, it could. Who knows? [edit - it does. It's haunting!!!!]

God only know!
