Battlestar Galactica is one of those shows that you either love or hate. There seems to be little middle ground here, compounded by the established fanbase of the original series that was not pleased with a Galactica series that differed so much from the original. But what came to pass with the Galactica miniseries and with Season 1 was a drama about the human existence that stands apart from the sci-fi genre. The fact that it happens to be set on board the last battlestar Galactica, as humanity flees from its children, the Cylons, is just an added bonus to a fantastic adventure.

Religion, war, life, death, politics, love, loss, the nature of patriotism, and the struggle between government and the military are all themes that resonate throughout Battlestar Galactica. As a dramatic series, the first season far outshines the old Galactica series, where bad episodes overwhelmingly outweighed the good. In the new Galactica, dramatic arcs last through the whole season, and constantly confound and twist the viewer. The best part of the series is that it philosophically challenges the viewer to think about the larger issues, to challenge the mind to debate the status quo, and has great relevance to the issues in today's headlines.

I would argue, and many would disagree, that the changes that were made were, on the whole, for the best. With the Cylons being created by man, and then turning against them, the whole issue of slavery, science, and playing god in the labortory are exposed for debate. Having Cylons appear Human, adds additional layers of the true nature of mankind. Are we at heart good or evil? Plus it adds to the dramatic nature of the series, since literally, anyone could be a Cylon.

Special effects are based mostly in reality and CGI is used well. The Cylon basestars and raiders look incredible, and the combat scenes are much better. Visually and storywise, the new Galactica is far superior to the old, even though I still have a fondness for the original.

  Battlestar Galactica season 1

As a fan of the old "Battlestar Galactica" many years ago I was excited about the new version, but had reservations about some of the changes, such as Starbuck and Boomer being women for example. It seemed a bit p.c. for my liking. However, when I saw the mini series I was overwhelmed by how good this show was. Season 1 is even better. In fact to describe this as an updated version is an understatement. The producers have done nothing less than re-invent sci-fi, with an authentic feeling plot and story, complex characters, and a completely new approach to special effects. The effects make space flight and combat have a much more believable feel to them, but they don't let the technology available these days dominate things. They use as many proper sets and actors as possible, rather than just c.g. This is not however the selling point of the show for me. The thing that appeals to me the most is the fine storylines, actually believable, delivered by people who can act, and convey rounded characters rather than two dimensional "goodies" and "badies". Speaking as a lifelong star wars fan, I can say to any sci-fi fan this is the best sci-fi I've ever seen. To anybody who doesn't like sci-fi I would say it is irrelevant. If you like gripping drama, you'll love this!

I am a huge SciFi fan and in my opinion this is THE BEST I have ever seen.

It is faultless and has raised the bar.

The story, the effects the acting ererything is quality.

My wife who usually just humours me or reads a book while I watch Star Trak etc is completely hooked.

I can't wait for Season 3.

When this new remake sci_fi series appeared onto tv screens i had not really given it a chance, watching only really the first couple of episodes, but after watching the first entire season i have become a fan of the series again , after being a fan of the origional series. This new series has taken a new approach to the way the story develops, i must admit that the first couple of episodes were confusing what with the "clones" etc..

New twist on an old story
Review created: 21/01/09
by:

If you thought you had already seen the Battlestar Gallactica series in the 1970's and 80's and wondered why they would make it all over again, then...think again. This is a modern adaptaion from top to bottom of the series. Political, spiritual, sociological, Militarily, the entire series has been reworked and made even more beliveable.
The weleve colonies make cylons to do the meniale tasks and rebel. Which spawns a war, and to which the Cylons lose. The retern 40 years later and smash the twelve colonies of Kobol. One remaining military vessel the Battlestar Gallactica escapes and with a civilian fleet on the run from the Cylons. Ok same plot as the original tv series, but the Cylons have infiltrated the fleet with clones, who regenerate into new bodies every time they die. The twist is some know they are cylons others don't. Some of the crew even fall in love with the Cylons clones(there are twelve and its up to you to figure out who they are!)
The shakey camera in scenes are annoying and i hope the fad wears out soon. However the special effects are spectacular, and the set design is very believable. in allif your a Sci fi nut and you liked the original TV series Buy is one as it will blow your mind.

Thanks for reading
Digster:]

Knowing the original series, it takes a wee while to get into this new version but stick with it and the investment will pay off. It grows on you slowly until you're hooked. The slow character development is necessary and draws you in like honey to a bee. It becomes a real world you could imagine being part of so you care about there fate and are left wanting more...

I was badgered and badgered by a friend to watch this series. He has watched it, and the 2 that followed. Eventually I relented and purchased the series on DVD on ebay. Very glad I did - it is some of the best and most interesting/entertaining made-for-tv stuff I have ever seen. Intriguing plot lines, excellent characters, great baddies!

  Battlestar galactica season one
Review created: 18/02/08

This was quite a surprise for me. I used to watch the orginal when i was a kid and even own it on dvd. But this was something different and yet the same. It has al the elements from the orginal but alot better. Don't get hung up on the hype you've heard about how some of the main characters differ in sex to the orginal. Because after you delve into this series you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. The new Starbuck kicks more 'tail' than the orginal ever did and is way more of a deeper character.
I will say that if you want the full story you'll need to watch the tv movie which is also on dvd. I bought it by accident thinking it was this and i am now glad i did. Although it all makes perfect sense just to begin with episode one. Go on give it a go i had reservations too but trust me they're all gone now.

  Battlestar Gallactica - Season 1
Review created: 04/10/07

Now for those of you who used to watch the original series back when TV was proper tv, the days of the A-team, Airwolf,Street hawk and such like, battlestar galactica was a bit of a stop gap between other goodies, yeah it was good some weeks and dirk benedict (the face man) with his womanizing and gambling certainly kept me as a schoolboy watching, but it never really grabbed me....

I started to watch the Mini series of New BSG and WOW, its come along very nicely....I had the initial horror reaction: Starbuck, A GIRL!! NO WAY, this soon passed and i think you'll be happy with the way they've re-jigged every aspect of the plot, the new cylons are very good, not men dressed in chain mail skirts anymore, they actually look evil.
As for the human cylons, well the prospect of robots looking this sexy and hot tearing round space in search of love was quite radical.

I was hooked, i bought and watched all three seasons of BSG within 3 weeks, buying then selling on ebay, i watched them all for about £4-5, cheaper than renting.

If you like the original, like sci-fi or something faster than lost, buy it!!

One of the best modern day tv series, brilliant. Lesser known and written off by many (undesrvedly) as "sci-fi" but I have yet to know anyone who hasn't watched it and loved it, particularly people who are not usually sci-fi fans. Definately worth exploring.

I cannot rate this program any higher than ten out of ten... This new series is well thought out yet follows the original story line closely, the special effects as you would imagine have come on in leaps and bounds since the original and do well to enhance the story line rather than get in the way of it...

A must for any sci-fi fans library and just when you think it cant get any better, series 2 is out there now...

what can i say about a science fiction series that has taken the United States by storm, adapted from the orginal BattleStar Gallactica and more revamped than anything else this new series uses some of the most superab science effects that i have seen in a long time. The only downside i thought was that there wasnt any characters/actors that i recognise and it took me a while to get into it,but all in all a good series

I am not a Sci-fi fan. I don't usually like anything on the Sci-fi Channel because I find that the acting is poor and the plots are hokey. I didn't even want to watch Battlestar Gallactica. Starbuck and Boomer are females? I didn't think they could pull it off. My husband started watching the mini-series and I got hooked. I love this series. It's believable, plausible, and the acting is much better than anything else on Sci-fi...I came in completely critical and was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to the new episodes every Friday night.
