Wow, has it really been this long? 2002? I remember vivdly sitting up every night, waiting for the weekly edition of BoB to come on, transporting me right back into the csarily real realms of WW2, warts and all. The tales of bravery, tragedy, heroism, cowardice, the battle against evil, but more importantly for the guys on the ground - survival. The ending scenes I shall never forget...
I highly reccomend this! and its on 6 dvds too! Bargain.

Hanks & Speilberg at their BEST !!!!!

Band of Brothers, is just the perfect series having to do with World War II. Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, directed by Phil Alden Robinson ("The sum of all fears") and Richard Loncraine ("Gathering storm"), starring Damian Lewis ("Dreamcatcher") and Ron Livingston ("Office Space"), this is the ultimate dvd for your collection.
It is the story of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne of the United States Army, and their amazing achievemnts between 1942 and 1944, in other words until the fall of Nazi Germany.
The series are based on the excellent book by Stephen Ambrose, and will remind you a lot "Saving Private Ryan". In the box set, you will find six discs, the five first of which contain ten episodes, which are the following:
1) Currahee
2) Day of days
3) Carentan
4) Replacements
5) Crossroads
6) Bastogne
7) The breaking point
8) The patrol
9) Why we fight
10) Points
The last disc, contains all the extras: a) an eighty - minute documentary named "We stand alone together", b) "making of" (thirty minutes), c) a TV spot for car company Jeep, and d) a very interseting "who is who" section".
Movie: 5/5
Extras: 5/5
Sound (Dolby 5.1): 5/5
Picture (1.78:1 widescreen): 5/5
Overall: 5/5
I would absolutely recommend you this dvd. Very nice, -and with historic importance- selection for your collection.

Band of Brothers follows the fortunes of Easy Company in WWII from initial training through the trauma of battle, all the way to victory in 1945.
I have been hoping that this was coming out on DVD - I watched the whole series on BBC2 and was completely engrossed by the story, the production, the acting and the sound. I have seen many war films (from Apocalypse through Full Metal Jacket to Saving Private Ryan) and can honestly say that I have never been so moved by a film of any genre. This was the first time that the real horror of fighting a war has sunk in.

The combination of its length (c.10hours?) and its engaging script meant that you develop a deep understanding of the characters and the hell they had to go through (coupled with the knowledge that it is based on true events). The relationship that you as the viewer build with the members of Easy is intense - you really feel the extent of their loss as slowly their numbers reduce.

This is not so much a movie as a insight into history - it should be seen by everybody as a reminder of what these and other soldiers go through in the middle of a war. It's realism is astonishing (not that I've ever been unfortunate enough to witness the real thing).

I am hoping they come up with the goods on DVD (proper 5.1 soundtrack and plenty of additional scenes) - I'm sure that a 'Director's Cut' could take it past 12 hours, each one of which I would be happy to see again and again. The interviews with the surviving members of Easy Company were incredibly moving and served as a reminder that you were in fact watching real life and not just a throw-away two hour slice of entertainment.

Much praise is heaped upon crap Hollywood blockbusters. This is what I call quality film entertainment, however (as far as I have heard) it has remained largley low key.

The best ever made WWII TV drama. A MUST HAVE, INDEED!
Review created: 25/07/06
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Five bars aren't enough to rate this DVD!
It starts with recruit preparation of the boldest USA soldiers, The Paratroops (with no disregard meant to the other Men and Women who fought for freedom during this conflict). These elite soldiers had a less then 50% chance of surviving. They were all volunteers.

It focuses on Easy Company, a platoon commanded by Captain Winters and their journey on occupied Europe, which started on D-Day and ended on V-Day.
All characters are based on real Men, whom give their testimony just before any episode starts, and further on the special features DVD.

Every scene is so intense that makes you gasp. It's an about 10 hours of epic History, masterly dramatized. If you are interested on WWII, you have to have this, and after you've seen it, War and your perception of it wouldn't be the same. Propaganda WWII Hollywood movies will just seem that afterwards: propaganda!

Spielberg's best of the best technical expertises. Without the lame vein to make you cry at the end, instead a cruel true vision of war and the Men and Women within. Millions of Men, Women, and Children unfortunately died on both sides, to reinforce this, in my opinion, is never too much, in order to keep us wake and prevent it from happening again. It's not the bravado, the medals, the daring, the boldness; instead is the necessity, the fear, the willing to endure and see another day, the pure luck or bad luck, the friendship, the love or hate, dying or living. All in the name of duty, all in someone else's name and very, very, few times in the name of justice, as the Allies Forces during this conflict fought.

Not enough words or images can give you the pain and hardness, the courage to do what had to be done, the friendship that kept them alive, and everything else those Men had to endure during WWII conflict, but "Band of Brothers" is as close as it can get to show you that.

I leave here my deepest and most considerate homage to all Men and Women, also their families, whom fought, died in and lived this monstrous war, in order to liberate us all, even today. As Leonidas and their Spartans saved Democracy, so have this Men and Women done the same and much, much more. They must never be forgotten.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much.

Band of Brothers Box Set Review

If you saw the opening 10 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, liked the style of camera work free moving in the battle field, realism, sense of death, and seeing new & young recruits finding their feet in hell on earth - this is a must for you.
I enjoy films of all types, and I would not consider myself to be a war film nut and so it was more luck i stumbled upon this epic. Luckily I happened to see the first episode when it was show by the BBC a few years ago. It was must see TV, I could not miss it like a film every week, made with true great and famous actors, stunning sets and super realistic action it was like watching the World War II for real. It is a rare treat for such a joint venture budget betweem HBO & BBC to be spent so well on something so gripping. When you watch this, watch it on your own without distractions, i promise you - afterwards you will have a new appreciation of what it must feel like to go to war.
With hours of extras, and commentary from real life war heroes, on which the series is based - they share some truely moving moments with the camera. Do not miss this. Highly recommended.

  Band of brothers review
Review created: 07/03/07

I picked up a copy of Band of brothers on reccomendations from friends. It was produced apparantly around the same time as the film Saving Private Ryan. It shows. Band of brothers follows the story of 'Easy Company' an american troup serving in WW2, initialy in France, through Belgium and ending up in Germany. It is a harrowing account of how cheap life was then (and probaly is now) during wartime. It is graphic, in places, touching and by the end of of it so many of the cast have died you really feel for the survivors. A word of warning though, on the 1st jump in to france easy company are seperated and this gave the opportunity to involve different characters and can make it a little difficult to follow. So, is it any good ? Absolutely, it is very well done and apparantly the most expensive TV drama ever made. It is not as good as say The Soprano's but in it's own right hugely enjoyable. I would certainly reccomend this if you are interested good TV, if you like war films this is for you. I have given it 4 stars simply because The Sopranos and Lost are 5 stars and this is almost, but not quite as good. Watch and enjoy, it is as relevant today as when the action took place, over 40 years ago.

Band of Brothers is a World War Two dramatisation, following the fortunes of 'Easy' Company. From the superb HBO stable, this drama is a high quality production all rounder. The writing, acting, direction etc are all top quality. I bought this series after reading the book by Steven Ambrose, and I am certainly not disappointed. Each episode reflects on different aspects of a combat soldiers life, their fears and relationships. If you have interest in military subjects or just want to enjoy television of the highest quality buy it!

there's nothing to dislike about band of brothers, if you have read the book by Stephen E. Ambrose, you will love the series. the series is set in the second world war, taking a company of men called easy company of the 101st airborne division through the second world war, from d-day to the eagles nest and the war in the pacific. the series is brilliant. the sets for the sries have been beautifully re-constructed and really do look like the actors are in the second world war. the box set is a must have!!!!!

This is a must see - i urge every one to get this on DVD. If every kid in the world saw this there would be one hell of a lot less wars going on.

The raw grit of this made a fasinating watch, and pulled you, the viewer, right into the midst of the action - very surreal when watching with surround sound.

AWSOME!!!!

This series should be required viewing for anyone under the age of 45, in order to show them the true horrors of war and what it costs in terms of hardship and sacrifice.

Fantastic in all respects; brilliantly crafted script, superb casting, excellent direction and production. Top marks to Messrs Spielberg and Hanks for this.

  Fantastic series
Review created: 20/06/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A fantastic series produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, after "Saving Private Ryan", that closely follows the book "Band of Brothers" written by Stephen Ambrose (a good read!)

It captures the feelings of soldiers before, during and after battle - their victories and their losses. The series follows Easy Company from training, through to D-Day, and on to the end of the war with Germany closely. Plenty of action, tons of emotion and short interviews with the real soldiers portrayed.

If you believe in heroes, and not the John Wayne type, this series is rewarding to watch again and again.

The soundtrack by Michael Kamen is outstanding also.

Easy Company WWII Paratroopers Mini Series 6 DVD's set
Review created: 30/10/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg teamed up to film a 10 part Mini Series based on the exploits of a group of US Paratroopers (Easy Company). Each part last 1 hour so over 6 dvd's you will appreciate the Allied invasion from 1944 to the end of WWII.

Trust me the title of Band of Brothers is a very appropriate title as these men have spend 2 years training for the Invasion of Europe and they are literally involved with all of the major battles.

My personal favourite is Part is the assault on the German Gun emplacements (Episode 2) and the story of these brave young men is preceded at each episode with interviews from the real life soldiers from Easy Company, who the series depicts.

This box set is available in a number of sepcial edition formats my favourite is the Metal tin which looks like a ration pack....although I have seen some in Green Bag formats.

Its RRP is £60 and I picked my one on Ebay for £20 great value for a great series.
