Album Notes The Backsliders: Chip Robinson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Steve Howell (vocals, guitar, electric dobro, mandolin); Brad Rice (guitar); Danny Kurtz (bass); Jeff Dennis (drums).Additional personnel: Greg Liesz (pedal steel); Skip Edwards (accordion, piano, organ); Mike Tempo (percussion); Joy Lynn White (background vocals).Recorded at Mad Dog Studios, Burbank, California.More rooted in old-time C&W than the denizens of Chicago's punk-informed "Insurgent Country" movement of the '90s, yet not quite as broad in their "roots" base as, say, The Picketts, Raleigh, North Carolina's The Backsliders step out fully-formed on their debut CD. Produced by Dwight Yoakam's longtime guitarist, sidekick and producer Pete Anderson, THROWIN' ROCKS AT THE MOON showcases the band's dazzling array of self-penned country-rock, ballads and flat-out shitkickers (with the title cut, "Lonesome Teardrops" and "If I Was King" especially memorable). Guitarists Chip Robinson and Steve Howell split lead vocals, each presenting a credible, authentic sound of their own. When singing together--as on the stirring "Last Train"--rustic ghosts of The Band emerge. Savvy nods to Buck Owens, Gram Parsons, et al abound, and the picking is tight, hot and thoroughly inspired.
Editorial Reviews ...The Backsliders deliver what may be the best country album of the year....if you're lucky enough to make it into honky-tonk heaven, The Backsliders will be the house band... Mojo (02/01/1999)
