Album Notes
It doesn't take much listening to Amy Winehouse's 1960s pop period piece to realize that this is a tribute with an edge--nice girls back then didn't sing about boozing and rehab. Since her 2003 debut album, FRANK, Winehouse has been a frequent presence on the gossip pages of the U.K. tabloids, and her songwriting here candidly reflects her experiences with drinking, sex, and drugs.BACK TO BLACK's production is an artful blend of sophisticated '60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with "Tears Dry on Their Own" incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends." Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, BACK TO BLACK is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- Winehouse is a nervy, witty songstress whom indie rockers, pop fans and hip-hoppers can dig.

Words cannot describe this album other than it is probably the best soul album ever recorded. it has everything, jazz, soul,a bit of reggae, pop, hints of rock, bits of love ballads, everything.

Here are reviews of all the songs on Back To Black:
1- Rehab:one of the best jazz songs that ever existed! a really great first single, and after 7 months, it is stil storming the charts!-5/5

2-You Know I'm No Good-one of the best r+b songs ever.great instruments used, great vocals, and another chart topper.-5/5

3- Me And Mr.Jones-a very good soul song.not the best song on the whole album, but definately worth a go!-3/5

4: Just Friends-a great,relaxing,summery feel song-4/5

5: Back To Black- one of the best songs on the album.the 3rd single, but didnt do as well as the other 2 singles.what a shame :(-5/5

6:Love Is A Losing Game-really tells the dark truth about love.hoping for it to be a single. a really great soul song-4/5

7:Tears Dry On Their Own-set out to be the 4th single.a really great soul/jazz song.-5/5

8:Wake Up Alone-great beat,great vocals,catchy,has all the things that make up a good r+b song-4/5

9: Some Unholy War-a good song,but probably not going to be a single.give it a go though :) -3/5

10: He Can Only Hold Her-a good popish/jazzy song-4/5

11: Addicted-a good bonus track.not the best on the album though worth a go-3/5

The maturity and raw honesty of the lyrics is breathtaking. The vocal delivery is outstanding; mellow, thoughtful, soulful, Winehouse manages to convey a level of emotion and realism that is rarely achieved by solo, female artists. This is an adult album which deals with grown-up subject matter - and Winehouse should not be made to apologise for this.

It's almost uncomfortably intimate even within the mass appeal it has attracted.

Long may you run, Amy. This absolutely rules!!!

This second album from Amy Winehouse is a fine piece of work, "Rehab" stands out along with "Tears dry on their own", but all the tracks are good.
When I first heard Amy on the radio I thought she was a sixties artist I'd never heard of, on this album she mixes the best of the old and the new with fantastic results.

whom hand on heart thought she was either a black lass or a 60's/70's soul diva, i certianly did, and you know what she's a talented "nutter", whos looks are strange and outside in the real world she seem wierd, however her album is really REALLY GOOD

I think Ms Winehouse's colourful and controversial reputation gave me expectations of something a little more radical than what was presented on this album. I find her vocal powers and inflexions a bit too similar to the likes of Anastasia, & I find her musicals styles very derivative of R & B and Tamla Motown, with a smattering of Phil Spector and reggae for good measure. The tracks are well produced and sophisticated and pleasant to listen to. The lyrics I presume are Ms Winehouse's own, with the exception of "Back to Rehab" they're basically love songs. girl meets boy, boy dumps girl, girl sings her heart out - think that theme might have been done before ..... to death? But then most of the population, the media, & commerce are totally obsessed with this myth of romantic love, Ms Winehouse's sales out to do well.
However the lady’s specific vocal qualities do grow on you as does the whole album.

I.M.
