AWAY FOM HER

My mum has Alzheimer's so I just wanted to watch this film. I was expecting a remake of my mum's life but I suppose they could never quite make a movie of a real Alzheimer's sufferer right?
Anyway, I thought the movie was good but it didn't really capture the true nature or reality of the illness but some of the 'explanations' about what happens to the sufferer and the carers during the illness are correct. I think the part about Fiona 'forgetting' Grant after only 30 days is a bit silly because I don't believe this would happen. My brother died last year, thankfully my mum is not aware of this...one saving grace, but if we show her a picture of him, she knows his name and some of the time that he's her son.
A good film though and although it didn't have me weeping buckets, I do think it gives a good insight into the illness for people who have never experienced it. Shame there were no violent scenes with any of the Alzheimer's sufferers though, something unfortunately the makers seemed to overlook....one big thing is the sufferers do get rather abusive, physically at first but when they can no longer walk, it becomes verbally. I would recommend watching this film but it's not as hard hitting as I would have liked.
