Apple iPhone 3G Black (16 GB)

This is the first review i have ever wrote and probably the only single item i feel strongly enough about to write a review.
Ive had my iPhone since launch day and its the 16GB Black version though this review would be the same for every varient, the only differences are colour and storage capacity.
Where to start? this little device does so much its unreal!

The touch screen is light years better than some of the other phones i have used, the way the phone actually operates is so intuative that people of any age and technological proficiency can pick it up and be using it in minutes.
The screen is large enough to watch full movies without getting eye strain or anything like that (something that used to bother me on my N95).

You can also download all sorts of third party applications, games and useful little applications that do all sorts of things. Some are good and some are bad, some are free and some you have to pay for but not many are more than a couple of GBP. Ive downloaded a few games that make use of the accelerometer, this means you can tilt the phone to move things on the screen and it works just as well as every other espect of the phone, PERFECT! The accelerometer works so well inface there are applications that turn your phone into a spirit level!
Wanna know what on in any cinema in the country? no problem, download the Movies app and click on the one you want, and it comes up with every film and its showtimes, you can even book tickets all in the palm of your hand!!

The thing that most of you will buy it for is the iPod side of things and you wont be dissapointed there either, its actually a lot louder than my iPod and this suites me as i work in an airsrcaft factory and it often gets noisy. The sound is pretty much perfect to my ears anyway...

The internet: It will connect to a WiFi network if your near one, failing that it will use 3G and EDGE to connect to th internet. Some features require a WiFi connection but when your out and about you would be surprised how many places offer it free, McDonalds being a popular one, Starbucks too. The internet works exactly the same as on your PC or MAC at home and im actually writing this entire review from my iPhone!

SatNav: This is so good i left it until last. I dont use it to plot routes in my car though im sure you could, i have a built in one for that but this thing really shines when your in a new city or town you are not familiar with, you simply click on "Maps" and it will zoom in on your current location in seconds and you can type in anything! Type in "pizza" and it will pull up everywhere selling pizza in the region. Type in Taxi and you get the same treatment. But not just where these things are, it gives you their phone number and an address and often even an email address! You simply click the number and your ringing a restaurant to make a reservation, no yellow pages, no getting lost or printing a routeplanner on the AA site. It WILL make your life easier.

I have waffled on a fair bit about this phone and i hope it makes you feel like you want one because it really will change your life, not in any big an profound way but i promise if you get one you will know what i mean and hopfully share my enthusiasm...

The iPhone is a great piece of technology with one of the easiest and practical User Interface's I have seen and used, the only other to be be close is the Mac OS X operating system, with the window scrolling and touch screen I think the iPhone is even better and easier to use.

I'm sure people will like it even more once some new app's start to appear and they get the hang of using the little hidden features in the GUI.
If your into technology this is one device you'll appreciate and get a lot of use out of.
This phone truly sets out the future generation, for mobile devices!

After being a Windows Mobile user since the very first SPV mobile phone i thought id take the plunge and purchase an iPhone 3G 16gb.

I said to myself, i wasnt going to start a new contract and that I wanted to use my existing contract on another network as im not with o2, with the iPhone so i purchased a Gevey 3G turbo sim.

The sim card is installed over the top of your sim and then inserted into the iPhone. This tricks the iPhone into thinking it has a valid sim card.

The iPhone itself is very responsive. With almost 0 lag in any of the menus and the only time the iPhone has ever crashed is using a Third Party app which i downloaded via the App Store (this was facebook and this has a history of crashing according to other iPhone users)

Step 1 - Activating the iPhone.

You need to download iTunes via Apples website and install on your PC / Laptop. I did this and connected my iPhone. You do need to have an O2 pay as you go sim card to enable your iPhone to activate and also to update the phone with your music, pictures, videos, contacts, calender entries, etc

The o2 sims are easy to get hold of, the latest "free sims" available from o2 are 3G so this enabled me to activate my iPhone and also put some music on it.

Step 2

Use iTunes to do a software update if need be. This updates the firmware of the iPhone to the latest version so when apple release fixes, they release a new version of the iPhone Firmware. Again you need to have the o2 sim in to do this as it uses iTunes.

This all worked flawlessly WITHOUT deleting any of my existing information. Now with Windows Mobile backing up was a must. Because of iTunes your data is backed up anyway so this all happened very smoothly.

Step 3

Using the iPhone day to day.

SMS texting. This I admit does take some getting used to but after only a weekend of owning the iPhone 3G im happy to say everything is working perfectly. It would be nice to be able to text landscape by turning your phone around but im sure Apple will include this in a future update.

Phone calls - quality excellent. No dropped calls, everything worked as it should.

Internet Browsing - Now this is the best portable browsing experience that i have ever had! Opera on Windows Mobile is getting there but this is excellent. No flash support but I soon forgave apple when i was watching Never Mind the Buzzcocks from the BBC iPlayer website! Stroke of genius!

Google Maps - this works fine also. Very simple to zoom in and out and plan routes. Bring on TOMTOM! Thats all i can say! Turn by turn navigation is a must!

Listening to music - The quality of the music is excellent and browsing my albums is so easy. This is how it should be!

App Store - Loads of apps available, brilliant! Great being able to add extra programs to your phone wherever you are, without having to plug your phone into your pc to do it! Facebook (brilliant shows you just what you need to know and navigating your facebook profile is simple) VNC (view your pc / laptop from your iphone - i use this a work so excellent that it was available on the app store - free!)

Camera - Good quality, not that great in low light but most phone cameras are the same. There are new phones out now with better cameras, im sure the next iPhone will feature a better camera.

Email - Works like a dream, did have to tweak the settings tho, but works fine.

Conclusion

How touch screen phones should be, everything is a joy to use and you never get tired of it. Recommended :)

I won an iphone from seller having emailed him before bidding, he told me phone was in excellent order and had not been tampered with. Two days later when the phone arrived I received a mail telling me the phone was faulty. Seller also said he would refund me after 24 hours...what a cheek.
This seller is not to be trusted. It is seriously irresponsible selling to list an iphone and then say it's faulty AFTER the item has been won. Why didn't he check this phone beforehand. He has caused a lot of inconvenience and didn't even give an aoplogy. Shouldn't be allowed to sell at all. jj

I sent an iphone back for repair in June, not heard a thing until he started selling again this month, now he has more than doubled the price of repair, conman, dont trust this man !!!!

Pros:

Fantastic Bright Large Touch Screen
Email, Phone, SMS, Web Browser and iPod all rolled into one!
Can easily be used as a computer in many ways due to the above points
Easy to Use
GPS tracks your movement in seconds and can also plan routes.

Cons:
No bluetooth connectivity to other phones, cannot send/recieve music/photos etc from other phones. Only wireless bluetooth headsets.
No MMS/Picture Message support, but can send pictures via email.
No flash player for the web browser.
Locked to the O2-UK network (depending on if you chose the contract phone/uk region phone.
Doesnt support custom ringtones but i believe you can download them from the iTunes store.

It was total scam. My first purchase, but the **** seller was a scam. But i paid through PayPal, so I was secure. But it took over one month to get my money back, after writing lots of mails, phone calls and after wasting extra money.

we have declinde because the seller has not sent the item £400 iphone to me and i do not no what is happening because i have paid for it and am trying to get money back now!!.

This device doesn't just operate as a phone, it is like carrying a fully capable computer in your pocket with style! Apple have worked hard on this and the developer side to ensure developers can make creative applications for Iphone users, these applications give the phone an endless list of features and allow the phones minimum drawbacks to become major strengths.

The Iphone has been criticized a lot with reports saying it crashes and is slow, I can assure you with the latest firmware this has never been a problem with me. And to add to that I have been running some intensive applications on the Iphone with no problems at all.

Although all this sounds a bit techy, the Iphone has amazing graphics which allow some very interesting games to be played, a recent game which I downloaded through the inbuilt Apple App store was Crash Bandicoot. This game is in 3D and resembles classic Mario Kart games it is great fun and the graphics never cease to amaze me on such a slim compact device.

The App Store contains thousands, yes, thousands of games and applications both free and paid to open up the unimaginable possibilities of the Iphone, most of the game developers have taken use of the most sensitive motion detection I have seen in any device (except from the Wii lol) and has implemented this new dimension of gaming into a multi-capable hand held device.

The Internet functionality are possibly one of the most thought out as it allow multiple methods of internet connections to be made to bring u content in the fastest possible way. Safari, the Apple web browser is very fast has a good bookmarking feature and is designed for speed as it is based on the Web Kit source which is constantly being updated.

In terms of looks, I think it does feel slightly wide but the stunning design of this makes u forget about it along with the features, it is very smooth and slim, they weight of it is just right as you can imagine it to be heavy but is perfectly balanced and feels good to hold.

In my opinion I think the Iphone is definetly worth looking into if not already done so, if you are some what like me and like to be able to do anything and everything a computer does, I would definitely recommend this product.

It is not a bad phone, however it is advertised as the most advance phone in the world... And I do not totally aggree with it.
Starting with the negative points:
1) There is no sms forwarding (it is not possible to forward a sms), no mms. These features should be resolved with the 3.o firware update in June. Let's wait and see what comes out of it.
2) There is NO chance of doing video calls
3) It has a very poor camera (2 megapixels). Nokia and samsung already have cameras with 8 megapixels.
(points 2 and 3 are in my oppinion devastation for this so called best phone in the world.
4) There is no software yet for speech with GPS (a voice telling you to turn right or left). However, it is also advertised that nDrive will launch a program for the 3.0 firmware... Lets wait and see as well... The competitors already have really good programes in this area (Nokia)
5) The battery is totally rubish. If you try to listen to musics... you have about 2 hours of battery. You have to use the resource of external batteries (already out there but still too expensive and not that good either)
6) the back up into the computer is not as easy and efficient as in other phones and it keeps asking you to buy another software.
7) Cannot pair up with other devices via bluetooth, only with other iphones (e.g. - you cannot receive a photo via bluetooth from a nokia phone of your friend)

Now the good points:
1) The applications - games and all sort of programs and mini programs you can put on. really fun and useful.
2) Good mail program and web browser
3) iPod - no matter what people say, the ipod it is still the best portable music, video and photo player ou there
4) Wi Fi - Very good, efficient and reliable
5) The app store - you can easy surf and buy all sort of applications on the app store... Free and paid apps


Hopefuly the new firmware will correct some of these difficulties... Let's just hope it will be enough to stay "ahead" of the competition.... Nokia and Samsung are already doing a pretty good job with similar devices

What I really dislike:

You cant do MMS without unblocking your phone and purchasing more software, voiding the warranty
You cannot get around the MMS on O2 by putting your sim another phone as O2 disable MMS from your sim!
Bluetooth ONLY connects to headsets
You cannot take videos, only photos
Cost of videos on iphone through itunes ie buy X-Files at £9.99

Likes:

Ease of wifi connection
Ease of setting up email
The large touch screen
Very good for watching films on it
Various applications that are available
Syncs to iTunes well, no probs yet
You can use Digital Copy disc that you get with Blu Ray DVD's to put a copy of the film on your phone
Charges up quickly
Battery life has been reasonably good with wifi and bluetooth on all the time
The Facebook Application is the best I have used!
You can use Orb - not Slingbox on the phone


Apart from what I dislike - a really good phone!

Still not enough for me keep the phone as I am returning it.

The good:

The bad:

The bottom line:
The iPhone 3G delivers on its promises by adding critical features and sharper call quality. The iTunes App Store is pretty amazing, and the 3G support is more than welcome. Critical features still are missing, and the battery depletes quickly under heavy use, but the iPhone 3G is a big improvement over the original model.

this is a great and useful item.. with the os 3.0, the phone functions very quick compared to its previous os.

Took me a long time to convince myself to buy one of these (they are rather expensive). I shouldn't have worried though - I love the interface and find it a great conversation piece at work discussing all the apps available etc. Great to be able to listen to the ipod and be able to pick up calls etc. This is great when I am away from hme and can watch movies on the plane/restaurant and surf the net as well as use Google Earth and the very useful ability to plan journeys. If you like Apple products I couldn't recommend this more - well worth the money

Great phone, amazing features. Only thing lacking is camera and lack of bluetooth file support. Apart from that this seems to be one of the best phones on the market. One note: make sure you have an unlimited internet price plan!

This modle is equipped with wifi and ha 8gb ram istalled which rectifies the two most serious flaws reported in the media for the 9500.

This phone does everything and more. Its easy to use. If you don't have one you need to get one. This is probably the best thing I have ever bought!
