Apacalupse Now Revisted - Redux Version

Having seen this movies in 1979 when it was first released in Britain and then watched it on TV I was unsure what the director’s intentions were as far as the ending were because the endings were different.

The version I saws ended with the orders ‘Apocalypse Now’ that brought in a B52 air strike that bombed the camp, which seemed appropriate to me.

The Redux version adds 45 minutes material that adds substance to the story and makes it more understandable and enjoyable and explains the ending that is different to the one I saw originally.

The reality of Vietnam can only be understood by those who were there at the time but this movie gives some idea of what it must have been like.

The DVD was readily available on eBay with and was good value.

  Best War Film Ever

The reason I bought this DVD was that this included an additional 49 mins of never seen before footage.
The DVD is 195 mins which when compared to most is excellent value for money.
The film when orignally released in 1979 was nominated for 9 Academy Awards.

A classic war movie a must for all War Film collectors.

Fantastic movie - a must see

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes.

I bought this film as it was recommended to me by a friend. It did not disappoint in the slightest. This film touches on a few home trues that the Americans did not take vietnam anywhere near as seriously as they should have. The best parts for me include the surfing of a point break whilst a town gets distroyed by naplam and the playboy bunny sence in the helicopter. This is a must if you are anyway into old-school films or like watching surfers avoiding motor fire!! Enjoy!

Forget the dozens of Hollywood films glamourising the Vietnam War - if you only ever watch one film on this subject, this has to be that film.Harrowing in places it shows the sheer futility of America's war on Communism and the human costs involved - from the slaying of innocent women and children to the desensitising effect on the American soldiers (young, conscripted men with no real conception of why they were there).
Kubrick's clever use of music and images is striking - from The Doors to Wagner the effects and atmosphere created on screen are theatrical.
Martin Sheen's performance is one of his best as the commander tasked with seeking out Colonel Kurtz, played by Marlon Brando, whose performance is breathtaking.
As true a depiction of the madness of modern warfare as you are ever likely to find on screen.

A must see film for fans of the genre

A powerful and moving account of one mans journey both physically and spiritually. At times visually stunning and at other times simply confusing, but this is entirely intentional to provide the viewer with a stark contrast in what is of course a visual medium. Sheen is masterful as the brooding Willard. Brando gives a strong performance as the prey that accepts things have gone too far. Support from the talents of Duvall and Hopper give them a chance to shine with small but crucial parts. The extra footage is expertly and seemlessly integrated into the film. Not for the faint-hearted but well worth the watching, if you have the 3+ hours.

Top Drawer Film. Slightly different to your Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and such like. All star cast, brilliant sound track and a real insight into how f****d up the Yanks in Vietnam were !!!

This is like a very very long Simpsons episode where Bart (Sheen) is after Homer (Brando) who has stolen all the donuts and is hiding them in a pyramid in the middle of the jungle.

Excellent film, with a political and artistic view

This is a really good film, and I must recommend it to anyone who likes artistic films or dark humour. I decided to buy this film after I saw a friend's copy, and when it it finally finished at 1:30am, I was left sitting in silence all through the entire credits. The redux version of Apocalypse Now is what its director, Francis Ford Coppola, wanted it to be. Its a lot longer than the original, and whether it is too long is simply a matter of taste. The main battle scene near the start is one of the best in any war film, with Hueys and Littlebird helicopters flying all over, but the film does not concentrate on being a realistic portrayal of war; instead it makes everything larger than life and becomes an anti-war war film. It is beautifully shot with a stunning soundtrack to go with it, with music from The Doors, Wagner and The Rolling Stones all in one film. Buy it!

The best film of the Vietnam war ( possibly any war)
Review created: 04/12/08

I saw this film when it was first released in the cinema. I had bad dreams for months. I am of the age that was called up had I been American. I remember the period well. This film is right on the money historically etc. And the use of Doors as music was inspired to capture the flavor of those troubled times. A truly great anti-war film.

  Apocalypse Now Redux
Review created: 06/02/08

Stunning film about a soldier's (Sheen) journey to assasinate an out of control General (Brando). Some legendary scenes such as the helicopters blowing up the beach, and Duvall saying "I love the smell of Naypalm in the morning!". Brando is his 2nd best film ever, Godfather is his best of course. Lawrence Fishburne in his 1st acting role, and has a great scene where he dances to The Rolling Stones classic song (I Cant Get) No Satisfaction. Also featuring Dennis Hopper is an exciteable photographer. Great film, although you will need a few spare hours to watch it. Gets better after each time you watch it.
