An exceptional satire on eighties yuppiedom

An adaptaion of a novel of the same name, American Psycho stars an excellent Christian Bale as the strutting, Narcissistic corporate high-flyer Patrick Bateman (a nod to Norman Bates?), in a mind-numbingly artficial and greed-obsessed mid '80's. His colleagues and acquaintances (and, indeed, Patrick himself, as he admits in the beginning) are completely hollow, devoid of any emotion and concerned only with prestige enhancing finery like business cards and restaurant reservations.

Patrick is different, however, in that he occasionally breaks free of this drudgery by committing deranged and brutal murders (in an almost whimsical fashion). The balance between Patrick's smooth facade and his psychopathic cravings begins to collapse, and this is where we join the movie.

Bale's performance is outstanding. He shows all the characteristics of a serial killer (obsessive neatness, ridiculous over-articulation and a pedantic hyperanalysis of everything from business cards to Phil Collins albums) but in an incredibly subtle and underplayed way, as befits someone who is trying to keep this in check. Interestingly, the one person he can't bring himself to kill might well be the only genuine human being in the film: his secretary (Chloe Sevigny).

As with many films made in the early noughties, there is a twist towards the end which only reinforces Patrick's overwhelming normalness and is completely believable having listened to his opening speech.

A very intelligent and stylish film.

I didn't hate this film nor did I love it. As 9/10 films made from books which fail, I thought this didn't do the book justice at all. Obviously you cannot show what happens in the book (the book was banned and had to be edited if you didn't already know) due to the fact that it's spine-chillingly gory.

Christian Bale portrays Patrick Bateman marvellously! His slim, toned, quick witty, pretty, rich boy character kills and rapes women in his spare time. Not that it's a personal quirk of my own, but I found this character very convincing. The way he can walk in and out of places with knives, axes and even nail guns just makes me laugh.

If you would like to see a yuppy killing people with 'romantic' affairs and homosexual banter with a touch of racism, this is the film for you.

I have to return some videotapes...
Review created: 07/10/08

This film can best be described as a 'psychological black comedy thriller'. It follows Patrick Bateman, portrayed excellently by Christian Bale, I still consider this to be his best role, even after his two turns as Batman. Patrick is a wealthy young Wall Street executive in the late eighties...by day at least. By night, his bloodlust is unquenchable, but he attempts to quench it by laying waste to vagrants, prostitutes, and even fellow colleagues.

This is definitely one of my favourite films, Bateman's slick yet sadistic one-liners still reduce me to tears of laughter, and Bale is ably supported by a cast including Reese Witherspoon and Willem Dafoe. The ending may leave some confused, but this makes it all the more interesting, you'll want to go back and watch it again in case you missed anything.

The extras aren't of much quantity, but the quality is there. Theres some deleted scenes, all of which are good enough to have been kept in the film in my opinion, and theres also some short but interesting interviews with various cast and crew members, including Bale, Witherspoon and Dafoe.

  American Psycho
Review created: 05/07/07

I was initially attracted to this social satire for two reasons: firstly, I had bought the novel and, on seeing it at the bottom of a pile of about twenty books that I have bought and am yet to read, I thought I would cut corners and watch the DVD first. The second reason that I was attracted to this film is because I enjoyed "Rules of Attraction" immensely, and on finding out the character of Sean Bateman is supposed to be Patrick Bateman's nephew, I wanted to see where evil was born.

Briefly, "Patrick Bateman is handsome, well-educated and intelligent. He is twenty-six and living his own American dream. He works by day on Wall Street, earning a fortune to compliment the one he was born with. At night he descends into madness, as he experiments with fear and violence".

By all accounts and purposes, "American Psycho" is a "hit and miss" film. On the one hand, you have the amazing set, a high quality of acting and a great soundtrack; on the other hand you have a one-dimensional leading character and a poor finale to the film. For those of you who have seen "American Beauty" or the "Truman Show", the amazing contrast of colours and product placement will seem mouth-wateringly familiar. There is an obsessive attention to detail throughout the course of the film, and given Bateman's minimalistic but attractive apartment, it is easy to see why '80's materialism flourished so profoundly. I must also praise Witherspoon's acting in this piece - she captures the detachment and estrangement personified by the newly-found independent women of the 1980's so well that it comes as no surprise that her character does not either notice her "partner's" odd behviour or seem particularly put-out when he ends their relationship. For those of you (like me) who are too young to really remember the music of the 80's, but who have been introduced to the era via "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City", you will love this soundtrack...get ready to tap your feet and long to be ten (five?) years older.

What lets the film down, however, is the character of Bateman himself and the poor finale to the storyline. Before I criticise the character, I want to make two points clear: firstly, I am not criticising Christian Bale as an actor - I think when you see the contrast between this and "The Machinist", you will see what a talented man he is; clearly capable of turning his hand at any role. Secondly, I realise that the character of Patrick Bateman is supposed to be horrendously shallow - encapsulating the spirit of Wall Street at the time. After an hour of watching the film, however, the controlling nature of Bateman, coupled with his lack of subtance, identity or history, becomes remarkably tiresome and your mind starts to wander somewhat. For those of you who like clarity in the final scene, avoid this film as the credits seem to begin with a huge question mark over the climax of the film. We are led to believe (and some reviewers here have concluded) that Bateman didn't really kill any of his victims - their deaths were a figment of his imagination. In that case then, where does the police detective investigating the disapperance of Paul Allen (Bateman's second on-screen murder) come in? And if he is supposed to be a ghost pricking Bateman's conscience, how is it that Jean (his secretary) can see him?

Look out for a lack of remorse (carthasis) at the end of the film: Bateman never gives any real reason as to "why" he murders people, because in truth, he doesn'

I decided to buy this dvd as I am a fan of the actor Christian Bale. The film shows the life of a 'psycho' but can be confusing at times as to what is really going on and what is real or not. Check it out if you are interested in psycological thrillers.
