HOPE THIS HELPS ANYONE THINKING OF BUYING IT.

If I were only allowed to take 5 DVDs to my desert island, this would be one of them.

Amazingly, British director Tony Kaye allegedly tried to disown this film and wanted to credit it to the now infamous fictional director ‘Alan Smithee’, only to be turned down by the Guild of Directors of America.
I don’t know what happened in the cutting room to prompt this, if indeed any of it happened at all, but if the director’s cut was to really be that much better than the released film I think I’d probably have been a puddle of despair by the end of it.

The sharp black and white flashback scenes work brilliantly and help the film flow smoothly and logically, something lacking in so many ‘flashback’ reliant films.

The calibre of acting is exceptional; believable and engaging. You’ll find yourself despairing for the main character Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), then laughing with him, starting to admire him and finally weeping for him. If you want a roller coaster of emotions, this is the film for you.

I did find some of the violence hard to watch, and still do after dozens of viewings, but both the gritty realism and surprisingly sensitive handling of what are still, even today, quite taboo subjects combine to make this the best comment on the futility, stupidity and ignorance of racism in modern society.

Watch this film at least twice; the first time should leave you rather numb, the second time you’ll see past the violence & hatred oozing from the characters and see what is not only a comment about the modern-day fatherless family unit and how racism is passed down generation to generation, but also what is ultimately a message of hope.

FANTASTIC FILM - A must see!

Personally I think American History X is a really important film.

I watched a borrowed copy on a reccommendation from a friend and have now bought my own as it's a 'watch again film.'

Edward Norton plays a 'trying to reform' 'neo nazi/skin head' who having been in jail for murder is trying to change his life and that of his family.

This is definitely NOT your typical 'fluffy reform' film where all goes smoothly and everyone lives happily ever after. In my opinion this makes it far more valid and poignant.

There is quite a lot of violence both of a physical and sexual nature so if you don't like that I'd steer clear. However, don't let this put you off as it's not inane pointless violence, it's an impotant part of the plot.

In my humble opinion if you don't see this film, you're missing out!

Just watch it,it's brilliant!

I have seen this movie before but didnt really take notice or understand it. i bought it because i wanted to understand what it is about and why the story is as it is. The movie is complicated but a very good movie well worth buying. BUT DONT GET ANY IDEAS!!

Ed Norton takes the lead role in this violent and hateful drama, initialy a racist murderer he is sent to prison where he learns the eroor of his ways, returning to his home town, family & friends on release he realises that he is no longer the person he used to be and sets upon the task of challenging the beliefs he helped to impress. This is a hard movie to watch and the pavement scene is one of the most horrificly violent scenes. Ed Norton is on top form - it reminded me of Apocalypse now - a didn't enjoy watching it but it is essential to see.

Absoloutely Amazing film. One of Edward Nortons best appearances, can definately reccommend to ANYONE!

This is a very powerful movie with standout performances from both Edward Norton and Edward Furlong. It pullls no punches and keeps a balance of dialogue and action that, whilst chronologically displaced, explains the development of a mind filled with hate and prejudice. If you enjoy Edward Norton movies then this is by far his best. Highly recommended.

This film is one of the finest films of our modern times, with exemplorary acting from both Edward Norton and Edward Furlong, looking at how being part of a white supremacy cult tore his family apart, sending him to prison for killing a man, and then leaving his vunerable little brother to the hands of the man who prayed on his pain, anger and vunerability after his own father was killed. Edward Norton plays a brilliant character, with empathy for the role and clear understanding of what his part was, the climax of the film leads to yet another tragic even for the main character, despite wanting to change the man he had been, he couldnt save the one closest to him.

onw of my fvpurie films, full of the inside mind of a skinhead and the culture and hatred that they promote and carry out, kind of a wake up film to close minded people

and then you'll understand how amazing it is.
the ending still shocks me even after having watched it before.
i dislike the fact that there is an ending at all; i really wish they'd told us what happened to Derek, but oh well.
You win some, you lose some.
What I did find interesting was the fact that the director didn't want to be a part of the movie after the final cut...

This is a really good film, and well worth the purchase. I cant recommend this enough, a full 5/5 from me.

American History X though controversial and perhaps offensive and too "heavy going" for some is a very, very good film. Amazingly directed by Tony Kaye, who frequently uses a black and white picture which works well and fits perfectly with the theme of the film.
The film carries many important and thought provoking points with regards to racism, neo-nazism and indoctrination of young and perhaps impressionable children. It tells the tale of two Brothers Derek and Danny Vinyard (Edward Norton and Furlogn respectively) who's lives are plagued with racism which derives from the murder and influence of their beloved father.
The Film goes on to show how the racist views are in fact unjustified and wrong, and shows Derek's struggle to lead his younger brother Danny away from this brutal and destructive lifestyle.
A Fantastic film with one of the most poweful endings to date. Well recommended.

This is an amazing film; it's very emotional in some parts and really makes you feel for the characters. I brought this for £2 of eBay, so its cheap and totally worth watching. Type in "America history x" in YouTube and you can watch the trailer or even the movie in 10 minute parts.

This is a powerful and disturbing film of racism in U.S. with a brilliant performance from Edward Norton as a rascist who is sent to prison for violence against black people where he learns the error of his ways.
Be aware, this film is not for the faint hearted. Apart from the coarse language and the graphic view of lowlife streetlife, a couple of violent scenes made my stomach churn! It's kind of hypnotic and you can't take your eyes of the screen. Not for everyone, but its a memorable film.

Extremely violent film
After being jailed for 3 years after a over the top racist murder,Edward Norton is released and immediately explains to his younger brother that the path he was going down was not suitable, Norton is superb in the lead roll and in my opinion
makes the film more than suitable for a discerning audience.
A violent film with a touch of hope thrown in for good measure.
Highly recommended

A brilliant film, well acted - superbly written. I sincerely hope that anyone who views this film will take it seriously, a social issue that needs addressing. A viscous circle that has to end somewhere and hopefully lead us to a better world of mutual respect and coexistence... enjoy!!!

Ive been looking for this dvd for ages in shops all over york i could never find it. We havent watched it cos i bought it for my partner for xmas and he doesnt know ive got it for him.But he has watched this film b4 and he loves it.
